Wait, this is slated for a Switch release? Good job, Nintendo! A win-win. They really haven't learned to start licensing 3rd party developers, even though it always improves the library. For gods sake, do what you did with the Virtual Console, only with 3rd parties! It worked so well for the 360!

There is one huge thing that, as far as I can see, is missing from that game. And that is puzzle elements that span the entire dungeon. Like the red/blue switches of many Zelda games. The best Zelda dungeons have always been the ones where not just the navigation through a room is a puzzle, but navigation through the entire dungeon.

The success of this game is gonna hinge on one thing: objects that interact with each other. Mario Maker has shells, bombs, and enemies that can strike switches; cannons that can be carried on moving platforms; hot things that (usually) melt ice; etc etc etc. These interactions can be used in creative ways to create complex mechanisms. That’s emergent gameplay. This means there’s exponential possibilities for designers to come up with fresh and novel experiences even years after the game’s last update. Without those possibilities, the game won’t last long term because the variety of experiences will run out.
@MetalB1985
@MetalB1985 Жыл бұрын
I agree, the editor itself is a game. You don't have full control of everyting, instead you have objects interacting with each other, which can have surpising and fun results. That's the joy of Mario Maker, playing with and manipulating a fixed system.

I really do wish companies like Nintendo would release more games in the style of their old games, they don't even need to massive like the 3d type games, make them something that has enough content to match maybe some of the medium sized indie games (or whatever it would take to make them profitable at say $40,) and then release them every so often as kind of a more affordable and more casualish (the problem with current 3d games is that they're getting to be too big, to the point that exploration feels daunting) type of game that way it scratches that nostalgic itch and it gives them a breath of fresh air away from that "bigger and better" mentality the major companies are stuck in.

One of the biggest problems I run into for dealing with "makers", RPG makers specifically, is that they tend to focus on one thing with other things being auxiliaries thereto. Many "map editors" are just that, focusing on making a map, or a dungeon, or something, with "events" or even "variables" taking very much a back seat. I'd like to know if there is a "dungeon maker" that has different modes, each streamlined for one aspect or another. I've had the starts for an RPG idea in my head for a while now. In theory I could have made it on the old RPG Maker for the original Playstation, I think I actually did try to start making it, but with nobody able to see it or play it, it didn't go anywhere. So yeah, I can imagine 4 different angles/aspects for an RPG maker to focus on. 1, mapping, world map, local map, map connections, alternate versions of the same map (before/after), etc. 2, monsters and sprites, images, movements and animations, movesets and attack/counterattack patterns. 3, variables and coding actions, attack specifics, spells, etc. 4, special events and actions in the game... cutscenes? In theory it should be easy to make a map where you're a young kid in your own back-yard (fairly large for a back yard, but still) and you occasionally find "plants" of various kinds. Fighting the plants should result in a low (10%) chance for them to "counterattack", swaying at you as though being knocked back at you by the momentum of the attack you just performed. Thistles have a higher attack power, Sage and other plants have a medium (35%-65%) chance of dropping an "herb" item to heal wounds, and a Chiccory plant has a low (10%-20%) chance of dropping a "blue flower" which can restore MP. But even finding an RPG maker that is friendly enough to even encode a "counterattack" system is frustratingly hard. I don't have the funds to go shopping around so whatever I do get, I NEED it to work.

If they haven't already, I wonder if they'd be interested in reaching out to Stephenplays, creator of the incredibly long Morning Mario series and a shorter one on GBG called Grandpa's Game Garage. While he's not planning to make anything as long as Morning Mario again, I'm sure he'd consider doing a stream or short series on this game once it's done. :)

Also, this game looks sweet.

Also HP reset makes sense. If I cleared a really hard room then get stuck its unfair if I reset the room with almost no HP when thats not how I started it due to a bug. Its an unfortunate side effect that you can just abuse it but if you dont like it then don't use it that way.

To me the appeal of Zelda dungeons hinges on always coming across new types of enemies and entirely new puzzles for each one. A series of rooms with the same selection of enemies and items, and the same kinds of block pushing/button activating/lock-in-key puzzles I've seen dozens of times before, is probably going to be difficult to make into something with longevity without constant updates

I downloaded and played it yesterday, and it is definitely still a work-in-progress... But, it looks and sounds great. I like the sound effects and music a lot, and I like the colorful retro sprites and animations. I had a couple of glitches where I had areas of the dungeon that my character couldn't walk to, as if there was an invisible wall... Happened in two separate parts of the same dungeon. Even re-starting the game did not fix the glitch. So that was annoying because it meant I either had to start over, or just accept the fact that I couldn't use that area of the map. But apart from that, it was super easy to play and I plan to mess around with this a lot.

i was sold by the first frame of gameplay footage...sure, the art style is "unique" enough to slip into Nintendo's eShop, but We All Know that its 'supposed' to look like Zelda:LttP (with a HUD more like Link's Remakening)...and the Video Title (and Game Name) say it right on the can: its a Dungeon Maker, which "scratches the itch" that Nintendo has been unable to reach as of yet...in fact, Nintendo reps have said multiple times that theyre not planning a 'Maker' for Zelda, like the two theyve got for Mario, so its even Less likely to get C&D'ed before it gets published (compared to AM2R, which got the axe, and then Nintendo announced SamusReturns-3DS almost immediately afterward)...im actually getting pretty excited about this, and i still have the video paused only about two minutes in, just to type this comment out... (EDIT): 3:20ish - the 'Ancestors, from Henrule', the 'strange, green creatures' often Hitting and Pursuing them, 'fighting back' with mob mentality...i mean, [chef's kiss], this game is Perfect, 11-outta-10, buy it twice...

Have you seen Wonderbox on Apple Arcade? I know many people don’t have Apple Arcade, but this game has been around for a while now, and it allows you to create complex 3D puzzles/dungeons. It’s not trying to be exactly like Zelda, but what it does, it does very well, in my opinion. Creating a puzzle/dungeon is so simple, while also giving a lot of options. I highly recommend checking it out. I think you’ll see it does a lot of the things you mentioned very well.
