I was looking to hear some of the prononciation and found your channel, awesome work ! It's very clear 👌 I still think chechen (actually all vainakh + most of the languages spoken in Dagestan) are extremely difficult to pronounce for a native speaker of a latin language like me 😅 I'm always impressed by such unusual sounds !

Excellent video, so excited to start learning this incredible language! I'm curious about writing systems though - you use roman script in this video, but I've read also about the use of Cyrillic and Arabic scripts to write Chechen as well. What do the Chechen people tend to use when writing, or does it vary from place to person?

@lu.u.so.
@lu.u.so. Жыл бұрын
It’s “duy h’un” but sounds like “dun” as he says it fast . I don’t think it can be translated directly but It’s something like adding “isn’t it?” « you know ?”Or even “ you know what I mean?”at the end of the sentence. But it’s not very accurate as English and Chechen are completely different languages and this “duy h’un” is something like a filler word that carries no much meaning. And Chechens normally don’t obsess over this word as Kadyrov does. For example me and my surroundings don’t use it at aaall.I only hear it from him and his surroundings on the tv which I thought might be their way to show how much they admire him and they are “one team”. But I might be wrong and it could be something like a territorial linguistic habit that I haven’t heard about.

Louisa Edieva is right in her answer, it is a language tic, that foreigners also have in their languages - for example the ‘you know’ in English or ‘tu vois’ in French. Similarly to the people in foreign countries, those who employ those words frequently, are people who aren’t the most articulate and that lack vocabulary to express their thoughts, thus needing those empty words to link sentences. Hope that helped.

Odd question, the first thing taught was Assal'amu Aleykum which is a "goodbye" (and as you said is from Arabic and with Islamic referencing as the Nokhchiy are predominantly Muslim). The thing is, they didn't become Muslims as a whole until around the 1800s, if memory serves. Do you know how they said "Goodbye" back before Islam got a major foothold into the identity of the Nokhchiy? Also, would you prefer I use "Nokhchiy" or "Chechen"? If there is a preference, I wouldn't mind knowing why. Thanks for indulging me, and thanks for making this video. The whole Caucasus region is an oft-overlooked but very fascinating region in the US if you sit down and learn about it.
