As a cabinet maker and installer as well, I went to my local Tracter supply and bought what they call a "cow belly magnet." They're about a 1/2" dia , cylindrical, and about 3" long. They're very smooth, and I used a large scale wire nut to shove over one end of the magnet, and ran a string through the opposite end of the wire nut. Hold the string and roll the cow belly magnet along the wall, and it finds studs FAST. No guess work ever.

EXCELLENT IDEA! It would roll really easy and not Mark the wall. Foals cowbelly magnets are actually push down the throat of cattle, and they catch up any hardware Nails Etc better call me in just and keeps the garbage Hardware from damaging the cow's stomach. If they don't have the magnets in them, the cattle can get what is commonly referred to as Hardware disease oh, and it gives them a lot of grief and can even kill them.

Just do an internet search for "magnetic stud finder". About $9 at Walmart, Lowe's or Home Depot. One even has a level built in. There was one years ago that was a long magnet mounted on a pivot inside a clear plastic box. And once you find the stud, you still need to find the center of the stud since drywall screws are inserted blindly and may be on the edge of the stud. Or they may have missed the stud and left the errant screw in. Of course there's always knocking on the wall until it changes from hollow sounding to solid sounding/feeling. No tools required. Or get a Walabot DIY.

They actually provide those magnet stud finders with some tvs for mounting the wall bracket.

I'm over 60, countless occasions I had a hard times to find a stud by damaging walls and ceilings even with professional electronic stud finder, but this one is totally new for me and I'm happy to find a new way of using magnet, so you are absolutely right.

Good idea, but even easier is using a waist apron. Also carries a tape measure and can carry a knife.

HILUX CHAINSAW Don't hang around the neck if a pace maker is present. Just sayin'...

HILUX CHAINSAW Put a bunch of the magnets on a string about 1-2" apart and you can let them hang down and slide the whole string along the wall until one of them finds a screw. As for holding screws, etc. so you don't have to bend down, just get a tool belt. If you're doing any kind of construction, it's a good practice to NOT hang anything around your neck. The tool belt holds your tape measure, screwdrivers, wire cutters & strippers, knives, even electrical and teflon tape, and your hammer... oh, yeah, and it holds your screws, too. Get yourself a holster for your cordless drill to go with it, and everything you need is right at your fingertips, for only about $20. Spend a little more and you can get more pockets so you can have different sizes of screws and nails so you don't have to empty one out if you switch to using another size.

+billder999 no it doesn't. you're making contact with a very small surface, I.e. the head of a nail/screw from a very short distance. unless you want to use 4 lb neodymium magnets that will pull your hand towards the fastener, then rip them from the wall (jokes) A traditional stud finder would do the exact same thing. you're poking and hoping with either device. the strength of the magnet is irrelevant unless you increase the distance between the stud finder and the fastener. possibly you'd get a more positive snap from a stronger magnet, but it's not necessary, unless your cataracts are bothering you

I'd take a look on Amazon and see which ones get great reviews. Then either order one or find it locally. I bought what I thought was a decent electronic finder, but it was so frustrating to use. If I eventually buy another one, I'm definitely gonna take a look at review.

They're not always centered, but usually pretty close. If it's going to be covered up, one thing you could do to find the edge of the stud is use a hammer to poke a skinny trim nail in 1/2" increments on the both sides of your mark until the nail pushes through with no resistance (meaning it's just going through the drywall and not getting stopped by the stud).

It is the builder's code... mess it up so the homeowner will have a heck of a time finding and fixing anything later. Works for me.

new carpenters use a thin strip if ducttape doubled over with super mag at end. Durable,reusable and easy to find in parts storage box and can be used to round up spilled hardware. Annnnd works almost as good as string pendulum method! (=

I'll definitely have to try that next time. Should speed it up even more.
