If playing roots is good for bass players then it’s good enough for six-string axeslingers. Great video and exercise. Love the soloing rudiments videos; keep’em coming.

This exercise works just as well for 3rds, 5ths, b7ths, 9ths, etc. Try it there as well. Roots are just the beginning. It really ramps up timing and melodic sense - AND keeps you from running up and down scales.

WOW Mark! You've given me many aha moments but this might be one of the best ever! Sometimes getting a solo started is one of the hardest things...this helped me to get out of the box. I can't wait to jam with the band again...I think I can make more sense out of a solo. Our lead guitar does some great leads but he noodles and gets away with it. I think I'm getting ready to pass him melodically.....thanks again for a another great.

MARK Z, The Minor pentatonic scale and Major Pentatonic scale have omitted the Half Steps. When adding in half steps to the pentatonic scales will create different modes. You should make YT lesson about adding in half steps to pentatonic scales to create modes. Another trick is Ed King , Gilmour, etc will play the relative pentatonic scale, so playing A minor pentatonic if you play C major pentatonic the ALIGHTMENT of the notes will stack creating different chords. Its like playing an A minor chords but playing a C major arpeggio onto will = a new chord extension

Baby Steps, Baby Steps! First things first. Thank you Mark for putting things in a light that I knew, but never actually put together! Your teaching skills are awesome! This is something to tinker with using all kinds of styles and expanding on from there! Thanks again Mark!!

@jefflutz2057 Thanks Jeff! This exercise is one of those things people think is easy (and it is), but often they don't really do it. They add other notes or scales or don't experiment with different approach notes, try 2 approach notes, 3, etc. Doing this with 3rds is an eye-opening experience for many as well! Glad you enjoyed it!
@MarkZabel

@waynegram8907 I've done this a few times, but I could always do it again. I tend to do these things in context rather than in a theoretical way, so you may miss them. To be clear though - this lesson is 100% scale-free.

@@MarkZabel I have notice Hendrix will ADD in the M2 and M6 in Band of Gypsys, Purple Haze, Hey Joe guitar solo uses the M2 and M6 on the A string and D string in pentatonic box#2. Hendrix Adds in M2 and M6 to minor pentatonic box#2. You can make a YT lesson about this

Mark, I started watching you to learn moby dick years ago. Im 55. I consider myself and intermediate player. Ive been told im a good player but just have never been good at soloing. This was helpful. Ive always heard "play a question then answer" when soloing but this sunk in quick. I will definately practice this. Thanks for the lesson. Another 20 years of playing and I should have this down. Thanks.
