Container ships can carry refrigerated cargo containers (Reefers) that keep important cargo frozen or climate controlled by running off of the ship's electricity. Some of these extremely valuable cargos require extreme frozen temperatures to ensure they won't be damaged during transit. These special containers are called Super Freeze containers and typically are programmed to keep the cargo at around -60 degrees Celsius. These types of cargos can include things like blood plasma or pharmaceuticals, which are arguably priceless as they are necessary for saving lives.

Now I know why cargo ships have so many huge diesel electric generators with back up power! That cargo must be incredibly valuable.

Yea it usually our most valuable cargo. Not uncommon for one of these boxes to be worth millions of dollars, or even priceless since it may be blood plasma that will save countless lives

I love the inventory aspect of a container ship. I'm curious about the shipping papers. Who holds them while the ship is at sea ? Once the container gets removed from ship who gets handed the paperwork ?

How long can the container do when unplugged? By the way I recieve daily shippingnewsclippings. It is free of charge and supports the key workers of the sea! Highly recommended. Regards Paul LC.

Sometimes we discharge reefers with live fish in them… while they are not -60…the same thing must be done. Quickly unplug discharge and plug back in. Pretty interesting stuff in an otherwise mundane work day lol.

Wow, what is in most of the containers? Very interesting the temp is minus 60° how many of these containers can the ship accommodate? Thanks Bryan, stay safe!

Usually there is blood plasma, pharmaceuticals, maybe even Covid vaccines in there. I’m not sure exactly how many we can carry since they require much more energy consumption, but we have the space and plugs to carry hundreds of them. Usually the deep freeze boxes are limited to around less than 10 at a time I’ve noticed

If some reason the cold chain is not kept and the reefer gets too warm does the customer get compensation for the product loss and a refund of the cargo fee?

Yes, they are protected by cargo insurance. There are specific clauses for different types of goods, but in general the insurance covers damage caused by variations in temperature

In addition to the container temperature records there are also customer provided temperature recorders that keep a log from the time the container is loaded until it is opened at the destination. This makes assigning liability very easy.

Without disclosing what was in those particular containers, what type of cargo is transported at -60°C?

Hi I think these videos are awesome and me not knowing nothing about Maersk I decided to look it up, because I met someone on Facebook and they said they work for this company but I was also told they cannot video or take pics of their space while they are working on the boat, is that true or how can I find out if what he's saying is true or not or if he work for the company, I know this is a little odd asking this but I'm just trying to find out thank you
