It’s crazy how this xylophone makes you literally get the feeling of being under water on an adventure. True nostalgia. One of my favorite Mario themes.

It’s 100% a keyboard effect. My E-Piano has the same effect on it, but any 90s-era keyboard would have that option. Specifically w/ a Roland piano patch.

@@mikeybalboa7520its a digitally synthesized sound meant to emulate an electric piano. Specifically it's meant to sound like the electric piano sounds available on the Yamaha DX7. An emulation of an emulation. Look up "Yamaha DX7 E Piano 1" on youtube for specific demos. The n64 did not do full synthesis like the DX7, but these Mario sounds are definitely based on that type of sound.

Man, I‘ve just turned 18 and I‘ve only played the Nintendo DS Version of SM64. This is probably one of the hardest hitting tunes of the game and incredibly nostalgic for me. I can‘t imagine how it feels for older people who grew up with the Nintendo 64…

It truly was a magical time.. It's 1998 and the Nintendo 64 is at every local E.B. Games, Funcoland, and local game store. The stores we're chalk ful of boxes with an assortment of games for all systems. Hundreds of games, so cheap at a buck or two a piece, you could afford to take home 5 new Sega Genesis games while you waited for your parents to be able to get the new 64.. Sometimes you would fine GEMS of games.. truly amazing experiences that you had never read or heard about... No internet at that time. You were the one to bring the game over and introduce it to your friends.. Cartoons, commercials, and LIFE were all animated. (Look up 80s and 90s kids food and toy commercials) Vibrant colors (cars are all black and white now? 🤷🏾‍♂️) And relationships felt...idk I miss waking up and seeing the world in "Teknicolor" (Lizzie McGuire)

I really like how they do the music cues on the water levels in this game. The other water level uses the same music, but adds the strings when you're immersed in water and then adds percussion when you've found the secret tunnel/cave place. I think it might also add the percussion when you're on/in the pirate ship as well. Also, does the tempo in this vid sound a little too fast to anyone else?

@@manflutewarrior Oh, I forgot to answer that question. This tempo is from the American version. In some versions like Japanese or European, the music is a little slow than the American version.

Some people question why this track isn't named Jolly Roger Bay since that level is available much sooner. Visiting Dire, Dire Docks is mandatory in a normal playthrough, whereas Jolly Roger Bay is optional. That is probably the most likely reason behind the track's name.

@@donovan7041 funny that no one ever mentions this. Sailing came out when I was 1 so I have heard it my entire life. When I first hear Dire Dire Docks back in 96 the light bulb went off that I knew it. And a few months ago the song was playing on Alexa and the light bulb came to life. I still like the Koji Kondo version better. :)

@@pickyyeeter oh did you actually listen to the breakdown, or in this songs cause I guess it would be the bridge. Its almost identical. Its only that part of the song, but its pretty much verbatim aside from a slight chord rearrangement. Koji has had a long history of doing this, including the original Mario theme. He was incredible though at rearranging these tunes and brining Jazz/Fusion to the masses that never would have heard it otherwise, and the songs still shine bright 40 years on! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b9CZlql1tLavfWw.html

I'm 36 years old, and like some of you old gamers, I have a memory. It was during a family meal at Christmas. And my uncle watching me play Mario 64 says "It's crazy how the graphics are evolving, it's become super realistic, look at the bubbles." It's really cool how they do it. On this level, the drums come in once you've stepped on land (after you've gone through the tunnel) and the strings come in while your swimming through the tunnel. The other water level uses the same music but does these same music cues (adding or taking away instruments) at different times, adding strings when you're immersed in water and adding drums when you go to the secret tunnel place

Fun fact: In-game, this song will be morphed between two different variations. One for being underwater, and one for when you're on land; the latter is the version with drums and percussion in the background.

It’s crazy how just one simple soundtrack from a game can make you feel and the nostalgia it brings. I have to say my childhood wouldn’t have been the same if it weren’t for Mario ❤️

I still remember the day I got my DS for Christmas and this game being with it. I used to play this game for hours and just explore the map and what the game had to offer. I never really went after completing the game but I enjoyed just walking around the map and of course, swimming with this song playing in the background. So, whenever I go back to this it reminds me of simpler, carefree times.

Timeless, nostalgic, and INSTANTLY recognizable; the mark of some fantastic music. This song nails every little detail and is a huge step up from even the rest of Mario 64's soundtrack, which is nothing to scoff at! This game's entire soundtrack is incredible but this EASILY stands out as the best in the game, and in many's eyes, the best in the series! Not bad for a water level at all
