I honestly don't really understand how the Mario Bros are plumbers canonically. But it seems so 100% natural that I cannot defy it. The only thing I can really think of is the presence of pipes in-game. Is that really all there is to it?

Remember that Super Mario Bros. was Mario's THIRD game. First was Donkey Kong, then Mario Bros, where Mario and Luigi are plumbers in the New York sewers, and THEN is Super Mario Bros, where they first enter the Mushroom Kingdom.
