I feel like you could call this a boss fight against the Mario Apparition, a giant floating copy of Mario's head created as the last line of defense before Bowser to complete your quest.

Well og marios manual says mushroom kingdom ppl were turned into bricks, meaning mario killed lots of ppl and goombas and koppas .... so this is his personal hell fighting his sins while looking for redemption *silent hill themes play on background*
