Supposedly, Yoshiaki Koizumi, the author of Rosalina's story, had to push quite hard to get the story into Super Mario Galaxy since Shigeru Miyamoto felt that Mario games should be as story free as possible, as gameplay is what matters the most, and thus should be focused on the most. While I do agree to an extent, I personally feel that both cases can be catered towards, as is also with Super Paper Mario's case. Rosalina's story definitely adds another layer to the game overall, and prevents Princess Rosalina from just being, "a space Princess Peach" if you ask me.

I get gameplay being the focus in a Mario game, but I can't imagine how an optional side story could possibly distract from that. I have plenty of respect for Miyamoto, but a lot of his mentalities when it comes to game design are, quite frankly, archaic.

That ending was a serious punch in the gut. Usually, that'd be something you'd find in one of the Mario RPGs, not one of the mainline platformers.

While I can easily see why you dislike the plot, but I actually like the depth in a Mario game. It was a nice change of pace, and made us enjoy Rosalina who later became a fan favourite.... also Super Mario Galaxy's final boss would actually be my favourite. Other Bowser bosses are just too simple and repetitive. Galaxy challenges you by having to learn new ways to fight before the final phase were it is the same but feels a lot more epic. I think the only rival would be Super Mario 3D Land's Final Boss.

I’m going to be a little brutally honest here: I think “but it’s not Mario” is a stupid argument for just about anything. The best Mario games are the ones that are whatever they want to be - Super Mario 64 is nothing like the 2D Marios before it, and Super Mario Odyssey is exactly as good as it is because it’s willing to do things that “aren’t Mario”, with its wildly different environments and even small things like having a vocal theme song. I can understand not liking the story aspects of the game, even though I personally feel they fit in quite well with the grand style of the game, but “it’s not Mario” is just dumb, same with most “it’s not like this series” things.
@Gamermario-lb3rq6 жыл бұрын
EmeraldDragon15 yeah I agree the whole “but it’s not Mario” thing is kinda dumb since most things about the Mario series is so weird anyway. The only things that would be out of place in Mario would be if it was something too dark(and even that is debatable if you take a look at Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time and Super Paper Mario).

Personally, I 100% disagree about the "Rosalina story parts" and the ending. I loved these aspects of the game and they add another layer to the series. Mario Galaxy is a grand adventure in space so I think it fits to make a more grand ending and to add a little backstory. I don't know... I'm kinda a sucker for stories in my platformers (that's why Sonic Adventure 2 is my favorite Sonic game). Plus, for me when they removed the story aspects from Galaxy 2 and replaced Rosalina with generic, happy, purple Luma... it was a huge bummer and made that game feel less grand and more soulless (even more soulless considering the fact that the game is just a husk of Galaxy 1 but with Yoshi).
@speedy932key45 жыл бұрын
Apollo Dawn you bring up a lot of good points man. Rosalina is my favorite Mario character, and I think that's because of the backstory that Mario Galaxy provides for her. With Galaxy 2, there is no real backstory given to anything, and since Rosalina doesn't appear until the end of the game, it really is an abridged version of Galaxy 1

Not at all; in fact, Galaxy 2 is a much inferior platformer to its predecessor when you realize that it’s a half measure between two different styles, those being the setpiece oriented cinematic design of Galaxy and the obstacle course, 4 step design of 3D Land. I love both those styles, but Galaxy 2’s attempt to create what 3D Land would achieve while still calling itself a Galaxy game and getting rid of the rich atmosphere and narrative elements is what makes it a far less flavorful and substantial experience than Galaxy 1.

The "plot" was what I loved about the game when playing because it made me feel like I accomplished much more. I didn't just save the princess and the kingdom but also went through a story more grandiose than usual. IDK about the rest of you all, but for me the weird story elements and Gainax Ending was one of the bigger appeals of Galaxy to me aesthetically. Like, the weird existential storybook of Rosalina and the weird existential nature of her existence as practically God ads a certain depth to the Mario setting, a gravitas that was also common to the Paper Mario games; Super Paper Mario especially... Maybe that's why Miyamoto ruined that for both their sequels because LOL MUH GIMMICKS! Tho, for Paper Mario that was more Kensuke Tanabe's fault, who I have an endless grudge against for that...
@Dr0dd6 жыл бұрын
The reason why Rosalina's storybook with it's faux-philosophical narrative fits aesthetically very well into the game is because it is Nintendo's verson of The Little Prince, who's small inhabited planetoids was also an inspiration for the mechanics of Galaxy.

Honestly i'm gonna have to disagree on the Rosalina and ending argument. I'll say the same thing i say about Sonic games towards this, what is wrong with them trying to do something a little deeper than the norm? One reason i enjoy and still enjoy Sonic games over Mario games is cause, while they're not 10/10 cinematic masterpiece stories, i still enjoyed the fact that Sonic games experimented and tried to do a lot more with the world and story for the little hedgehog. The endings for Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Unleashed and Black Knight are still amazing and everything leading up to it was fun and interesting to go through. So when i played Galaxy and they introduced this mysterious woman with such an interesting backstory it made me much more invested into the game and wanting to know more about her, i kept wanting to read her story and was so moved by how emotional of a story it was. On top of that, the ending was gorgeously done, yeah it had a little sap to it, but what feel good moment doesn't have a little sappiness to it? Overall, Galaxy did something that no other Mario game did and that was get me invested into the game for more than just gameplay, it was that little energy boost i needed to be excited for Mario games and what i had hoped for in games going forward. Sadly after this they kinda just went back to basics and have the same generic: Bowser steals the princess/or something to build his kingdom, Mario has to stop him, yipee wahoo. Galaxy 2, 3D Land, 3D World and Odyssey are all fantastic games, but they've failed to get me invested in the series as much again other than thinking of them as "Just some solid fun platformers".

Ralsei yep. Trying to make a darker story with Shadow/Sonic 06? Total garbage. Lost World’s gameplay? Garbage. Another half-arsed attempt at a darker story with Forces? Awful. The crappy storybook games? The plots were ok, but the gameplay was dreadful. When they give up and just try to cater to nostalgia, the results are mixed. Sonic Mania is good, Sonic 4 sucks violently. It seems Sonic Team is just content to make mediocre games at this point, because they know the hardcore fans are going to defend it anyway. Their old throw everything at the wall and see what sticks approach didn’t always work, but they used to take risks with the series that still payed off more often than not. So I’d argue Sonic games really don’t take risks anymore. For example, putting Green Hill zone into every single game they make now. They change the story a bit, but they’ve just been rehashing the boost gameplay for years to diminishing returns.

I loved the "sappy Disney stuff" and especially the Grand Finale. Rosalina was so cool and mysterious yet gave off this air of benevolence and wisdom, the Lumas were really cute and her storybook to me was really tragic and heartfelt while elevating Rosalina to being more than just Peach in space (I don't know if she would be as much a staple of the Mario series nowadays without that book). The Comet Observatory felt so epic to traverse through, particularly with all the little biomes and seeing everything grow more alive and colourful as you found more a Grand Stars. That was really satisfying for me to see the Star Festival the way that should have been before Bowser ruined everything, plus with all the friends and races you met along the way.

That point about the filler stars... wouldn’t that apply more to Sunshine? Like you said, that game had a required count of 7 stars, yet someone at Nintendo thought it was a _brilliant_ idea to pad the game to 120 thanks to the stupid Blue Coins and obscure Secret Shrines for no reason other than “64 had it”. At least the Comets and Luigi missions in Galaxy are completely optional. Now does that excuse how badly executed they are? No, but I don’t get why you say it’s a bad thing here when Sunshine had it 10 times worse.

@blazingwaters74696 жыл бұрын
HoshiHearts RetroGaming Because Blue Coins and Hidden Shrines are so obtuse in their nature it FEELS like they’re there to pad out the game’s Star count. You can’t collect them in all the episodes, you have to select the specific levels they spawn in, hope you didn’t already collect it, and trust a map counter that only tells you the overall count, instead of telling you which ones you nabbed from each specific level. That’s incredibly more filler than what Galaxy had.
@blazingwaters74696 жыл бұрын
Not to mention Sunshine's repeat missions are way more obvious. Remember all those "Secret of ____" Missions that are available in each world? How about the fact that you have to do those same missions again just to get a new Shrine that's tethered to a time limit? How about all those Shadow Mario missions you face several times throughout the game in both Delfino Plaza and in the 7th Episode? You even had to fight Blooper 3 times, Petey Piranha 2 times, all those red coin missions, do the racing thing in Ricco Harbor about 3 times, and a couple more. Yea, Galaxy had you repeat some things, but those are kept to Comets you only have to do about 1-3 times compared to everything else in the game and a few repeat Galaxies. Sunshine just says "Do this again for the duration of your adventure" and expects you to just fall for it.

Also, Grand Finale Galaxy clearly meant to be a “Congratulations, you did it!” sorta finale and not an actual level. Why else would it not only be incredibly easy, but most of the characters there are celebrating? Then again, I suppose you could argue the Daredevil run of Grandmaster Galaxy from SMG2 did a much better job of that front, since that level’s daredevil comet actually felt like a rewarding challenge... only problem with it are the Green Stars just to get the thing, which I think are just as bad as Blue Coins and only exist to pad out the game’s star count. Imaging calling Rosalina's story a generic Disney princess story when it was literally one of the best things in the game? Rosalina's story along with the opening sequence of the game showing the origins of the power stars and giving a character an actual backstory adds alot more in terms of lore in the Mario series which is something Nintendo should do alot more. I get that when thinking of Mario that not alot of people would think of stuff like lore or development of characters, but that doesn't mean there shouldn't be any at all. When they did that in Galaxy, it was one of the best things ever to be in a Mario game and was one of the things that made Rosalina such a popular character over the course of her existence in the series. Saying that it was nothing more than a sappy, Disney princess sob story is just straight up feels insulting
@magicowlofbacon94162 жыл бұрын
Well, it was thrown in in a completely optional side room with no bearing on the plot, which makes it feel like an afterthought. Also, his complaints were more about how pointless it is in terms of furthering the game, since if you look more carefully, all the stuff it tells you is kind of unimportant to everything going on. It's also weird that one character just randomly gets a backstory, which makes it stick out even more in a series that doesn't do that. It's less that it's bad, more that it's out of place.
@magicowlofbacon94162 жыл бұрын
Also, before you mention the mario RPGs, those games have consistent tones and styles throughout, and as such are able to have more complex stories, since they are story-driven, unlike this game, which just decides it has a huge plot right at the end. Basically, you can't just have a beginning and an ending and call it a plot. You need more in-between narrative, or else it'll just feel awkward and forced.

I love Galaxy over every other 3D Mario game. So here are my dumb defensives against the points you brought up. About the Rosalina storybook, they wanted to do more with that but I think Miyamoto stepped in and shrunk it down. I personally like that storybook because it's something "not Mario" in Mario. Because when I think "Mario games", I think grassworld, desertworld, beachworld, jungleworld, iceworld, skyworld, mountainworld, lavaworld, Peach constantly going "MARIOOOOOOOO" all the time with the same voiceclip, bosses being the koopalings again and again, flagpoles, "BAH" voiceclip during music and old Super Mario Bros. music being recycled over and over. And that's bland, uncreative and sucks. Throw new experimental stuff in there which exactly what that Rosalina storybook thing is. Not even a fresh coat of paint, just all new. I also like how that fleshes out a character in a Mario game. And hey, you don't even have to go in that storybook room once and it's entirely optional. I don't get why it'd be such a big deal. Also, Disney? I wouldn't even think this is Disney sappy shit. Sappy, maybe. But when I think of lumas sacrificing themselves into a black hole, throwing all the planets into a blender so they all die and create a new universe, I wouldn't think Disney. I like that ending because it's not Mario. Maybe Nintendo should just make more Mario games that don't follow that stupid Mario formular, like how Breath of the Wild threw its Zelda formular out the window. About the bosses, at least they're really flashy and often huge. Later 3D Mario games lack both style AND substance with bosses (3D Land, 3D World and Odyssey). And I love the huge robot bosses because they're basically alive levels that explode at the end which feels really good. Kinda like Perfect Chaos from Sonic Generations but the whole level explodes at the end. Oh, and the forgettable bosses, I kinda like them because they aren't overused in other Mario games (kinda like some of the bosses from New Super Mario Bros. 1) and at least they're fun to beat because they're so flashy in some way. About the alternative stars, they're not precisely as linear as it sounds like because you're flying to multiple planets and you have to search often through multiple planets for that star because you often won't be able to backtrack to previous planets. It didn't seem like a "Go do the other obvious path" to me, that's more so a Galaxy 2 thing for me. About the "Do it again" thing... you're gonna throw Odyssey into the garbage bin at the post-game if you hate that in Galaxy. At least it's only 61-times in Galaxy 1 where you have to do these repeated things, compared to Odyssey's... maybe over 200-times. I certainly hate Odyssey because of that; no moons are worth anything when there are other, boring moons that are exactly like this or require less to do for others (e.g. kicking a rock 50 times, throwing 500 coins at a plant or listening to what an NPC has to say is worth the same amount as going through a tough platforming challenge). I'd rather wait for a Galaxy 3 (or an A Hat in Time 2) than an Odyssey 2 because I don't have faith in them that they'd fix those issues from Odyssey 1 if not many people brought them up... With a Galaxy 3, at least it's super flashy and has a beautiful presentation but with an Odyssey 2 (or 3D World 2), it won't have style or substance so it's just nothing... to me.
@jooglebob6 жыл бұрын
Well-stated. A lot of the criticisms of Galaxy here [which are valid, don't get me wrong] are the exact same in Odyssey. Easy bosses? Check. (plus you have to do all of them twice in Odyssey) Doing the same levels over and over to collect new things? Check. (plus Sunshine felt like it had more filler stars than Galaxy. How many times did I have to catch Shadow Mario? How many times did I have to fight Gooper Blooper?) I love both of these games a ton and I truly enjoy both the open world style Odyssey uses and the semi-linear style Galaxy uses. Just don't go back to 3D World's all-linear style - that was a fine game but not up to the standards of Galaxy and Odyssey.

Ikr? I don't really like Mario BECAUSE there is rarely any story, thus not getting people like me invested as to what is going on. I always appreciate it when the Mario series TRIES to tell a story and make characters have more depth rather than "The Good Guy" or, "The Bad Guy" or, "The damsel in distress" When I play games it's because I'm invested in the world and those around me, but when these characters are one-dimensional and boring, then I honestly couldn't care less. Why should I "save the world" when I could be playing a game where it actually makes me feel something. This is why I feel Nitro Rad saying, "It's Mario, Mario doesn't need story" and thus should never have any bits of story is flawed.

This was one of the first games I really loved as a kid and I was 6 years old when I got it on the year of release, can't remember what time of the year or why, but I used to play it with my dad (he took control in my place when I asked him because there was something that I simply couldn't beat as a dumb kid) until I got older, beat the game on my own, and only like in 2017 or 2016 I actually went and started a new file and got 100% with both Mario and Luigi. I also got 100% on SMG2 but that was like a year or two prior to completing the first game.

Sunshine is 10 times more guilty of filler than Galaxy is. I hope you acknowledge this. I don't feel like explaining why, but it should be pretty obvious. Also, prankster comets are where the game's main source of difficulty comes from. Take that away, and you have a stupidly easy game to 100%. Now, this might just be because I'm really, REALLY experienced at the Galaxy games, but I found every daredevil run to be easy, however I can acknowledge lava spire run to be brutal for a first timer. (It definitely was for me.) My point is, especially for bouldergeist that there is a strategy to deal with these bosses. With B Geist, if you continue to just walk in one direction the rocks will never hit you. You should try this out. The ONLY true flaw I can find with this game that noticeably hinders it are the scarring purple coin missions, which Galaxy 2 fixed IMO. They don't give me trouble anymore, but it doesn't make the sandbox purple coins (e.g beach bowl and freeze flame) any less tedious, and those are actually the ones I'm referring to. Sorry if I've been critical, but your review is well constructed and I understand that the only way to find a fault with something almost flawless in its design is to be a dick, as FUgamecrue once said.

Maybe it was a tad overambitious, but I still appreciate them trying to give Rosalina some actual character rather than making her a glorified plot device like Peach. I mean, you could replace Peach with just about anything and the plot would stay mostly the same, but I kinda-sorta-almost-not-really felt empathy for Rosalina and the Star Children. I mostly agree except that part about the story cause it’s not intrusive like Sunshine’s and it’s genuinely beautiful fleshing out our new character, especially for someone who’s practically Mario’s god, and it just adds so much more depth to this game’s setting and lore which is something I appreciate with World building like you mentioned in Sunshine even if not needed for Mario, plus cmon Sunshine literally added a maternal plotline for Bowser Jr.

I actually found myself really enjoying the tripped out story in this game. I liked how different it was from all the other games in the series, I like the storybook backstory, and I like how the whole observatory played into giving Rosalina her own history. I know you say it feels out of place, but I was very pleased they changed things up a bit, considering how samey the New Super Mario Bros games were in terms of premise. Its-a me, another faceless member of the numerous commenters about how the Rosalina story is good. Personally, I just think it would’ve been better than the alternative. I think that, most likely, if Rosalina had just been left like any other Nintendo/Mario character and had no backstory or justification or character, people would’ve called her just safe and boring, most people would end up just calling her “Space Peach”. I enjoy the fact that this Mario game had a story to tell you separately from the main plot, however light and somewhat sad it may be. I think that saying a game’s drastic differences to what came before are negatively affecting it CAN be used appropriately, like in the case of Banjo Kazooie and Tooie vs Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts (if you’re familiar with that debacle), but in this case I think that saying a Mario game shouldn’t have a compelling story is just kind of holding it back. If you think about it, one of the MANY complaints leveled toward the New Super Mario Bros series is how each entry fails to really innovate or do anything substantial that the others didn’t. It’s all just the same shlock where, surprise, surprise, Bowser kidnaps Peach and Mario wants to save her. Refusing to allow Mario games to have any sort of story is just putting limitations on the series that needn’t be there in the first place. Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t want Mario to spontaneously turn into Kingdom Hearts, and have a massive overarching story that’s so convoluted and complicated that nobody could understand it unless they knew a friend who spent four weeks in a basement with cork boards trying to tie it all together. I just think that Galaxy took a step in the right direction. Even if Mario games all had relatively simple plots/stories still, anything is better than the level of saminess they have currently.

I absolutely loved this game! Definitely my favorite 3D Mario. It's so much fun and the level design is fantastic! I will admit that the comets were a bit annoying but I felt like they popped out sporadically so they weren't too bad and when too many appeared, I would hold off in doing them. If one appears in the first world and i just started world 3, for example, i would finish World 3 and then go back to world 1 for the comet. That way, i won't get annoyed redoing a level i did not too long ago. I never got annoyed having to do since i love this game so much! Some of the comets are really hard. Beating the stone boss with just 1 hit is frustrating! It was probably worse with Luigi due to his friction. The story did feel a little bit out of place but that is not a bad thing at all. Its It's something different in a Mario game and it's really interesting. The game also introduced Rosalina which is one of my favorite characters and back story is really sad. Again, maybe a bit out of place in a Mario game but I think that's why it's so great because it's different coming from a Mario game. Honestly, I hate the arguement that this game isn't as good as Mario 64 or Odyssey because it's too linear. Being linear is not a bad thing. Sure, exploring a 3D environment is great but Galaxy has fantastic level design that it more than makes up for it. It's not fair to say that it's not as good because of it. It's a very ridiculous arguement. I think Galaxy 2 is the better game but Galaxy 1 has a special place in my heart.

Your comments on the story are uncalled for, really. The story in the main line Mario games have never been important, but still there. You are saying Mario being thrown into prison cause a lookalike was throwing grafiti all over the place and how now has to clean it up, is a better Mario story, than an omnipotent being asking Mario for help cause Bowser wrecked 'em? Mario never had any substance to the story prior to Sunshine, so finally adding something, is something Mario really needed.
@NitroRad6 жыл бұрын
I thought Sunshine's story was great dude! Mario battling with being framed I think is still within a tone the that feels right with the Mario series. The silly unveil that the evil Mario is bowsers son too, I dug it a lot as a kid. The universe and existence itself collapsing and everything being reborn from scratch? Yeahhhhhh I never was a fan of that. It confused me when I was 13, and it made me feel somewhat uncomfortable? Like it was just too much, yknow? I'm not saying a Mario game can't have a story, idk where everyone's getting that from. But in a main series Mario title I feel there's a tone you should aim for, and I think games like Sunshine and Odyssey hit that nail quite a bit better. In the end though, it's just my opinion. You don't need to agree, and that's fine dude.

@@NitroRad I feel that Galaxy's and Rosalina's story was a good vehicle for introducing the concepts of life and death to young children (5 - 8 ish), Mario's main target audience, in a way that is easy to understand while also piquing intrigue as those children got older (myself included, I got this game at age 7 and loved it to death). I wouldn't say that it's a generic Disney Princess sob story that was placed in an ill-fitting series, but rather it's a sobering element that tells players that while Mario's world may be overall happy-go-lucky, that doesn't mean the characters within aren't free from having their own tragedies. At the same time, characters who experienced tragedy don't let those circumstances define who they are. It's relatable, in a sense. Paper Mario has done similar tones before, (Super Paper Mario mostly, but The Thousand-Year Door also presented these themes with Admiral Bobbery's backstory).

the only deep/emotional story that worked well in Mario was the FIRST Paper Mario. Think to the ending with Twink saying goodbye and Mario and Peach watching the fireworks to the main theme of the game. Very simple but very emotional. TTYD followed suit without changing the formula. Origami King had a very sad ending but with one-off characters that were only made for that game. They could've continued Paper Mario with characters like Twink and the Star Spirits.

I think you're definitely on to something with the comets, the fast-foe and speedrun comets never did anything to me but I don't see how the Purple Coin missions are more tedious than getting 100 coins in 64 or Sunshine. And you complain about the bosses being too easy, then about the Daredevil missions being too hard? What? You can't have your cake and eat it too, my guy And your complaints with the story are just complete grandpa blabber. Its clear from the opening alone that Galaxy was supposed to be a tonal shift for the series, a shift into something more grand and epic. It makes sense for them to introduce a deeper character for a story that tries to be something more than the sum of its parts. And cmon, you can't deny that the ending supernova gave you goosebumps.
