I think i know what this represents, most people are saying it's just goomba feeling sorry for i'ts fallen comrades, but i think this is from the perspective of mario, feeling guilt because of all the goombas he's killed, being forced in his mind to be a goomba, to feel their pain, the part where he destroy's "himself" represents his self hatred. hope you enjoyed my take on it.

Well... That was... Different.

I don't think this is meant to make mario feel what a goomba feels, but just showing the life of a goomba. Eventually the goomba defeats mario (explaining the part were it goes super and giant and destroys marios impersonated by goombas and then plows through a figure of mario himself, the fact that goomba has the shape of mario is probably just because of technical limitations). After murdering the guy that just wanted to save his missus and seeing others of his kind killed after being forced to stop the hero, the goomba realizes where all this evil came from. If bowser didn't kidnap the princess mario wouldn't have to go rescue her, and hundreds of innocent goombas and koopas wouldn't be sent by bowser to die fighting a guy they had nothing against just so their lord could have his time doing god knows what to the princess, wrecking her mind and forcing her to live as his mistress. In name of its fallen comrades it targets the origin of all this pain and brutally crushes through bowser and his line of most loyal goombas. After this, goomba's mind is corrupted by all the pain and destruction caused both by bowser and by itself. It killed his lord and a hero, but also ended the war that was killing its kin. Goomba is now done and commits suicide by throwing itself to the lava.

This really shows what kind of stories you can tell with a simple level in Mario Maker...

I understand it now...So the ghosts in world 1-1 are dead goombas... The pipe represents the death that haunts the goomba... The giant mario represents mario killing his friends OR him going psychopath and killing his friends... The statue represents that he wants to kill mario... Him killing Bowser says that he is gotta kill him for what he has done, placing the goombas that they can die OR being a psychopath and killing him... And the last section is him commiting suice because: First route: Sadness (normal route) Second route: Thinking what he just has done (both routes) Third and last route: Kills himself because he killed his friends and his master (psychopath route)

It's what a goomba has to go through, because all the ghosts were the goombas that died in World 1-1. Also since you are a goomba in the level, the ghosts were a memory of the goomba that has survived this whole time.

I think this is what the level is trying to repersent: after mario cleared 1-1 one Goomba was left surviving. All his freinds dead, he slowly plunged into insanity. The Goomba is forced to re live the horrors he experienced for all eternity.

It was the goombas first day on the job. He noticed that the goombas had to walk to their deaths. He says "hell no" so he went up the pipe. He went to a haunted cemetery where all the ghost of the deceased Mario enemies are. He accidentally went down a pipe that triggered a button which led to the deaths of many goombas. He went back up the pipe. He starts to go crazy and starts hallucinating the other goombas as ghosts and goes on a killing spree. He then committed suicide for his crimes. He then saw God along with his angels. The goomba though he was going insane so he attacked God and his angels. Which lead to the goombas demise. He was sent straight to hell along with his fellow goombas. THE END

I think this is a story about a goomba who was going to war but he only saw him and his friends marching off to death. He ran to what seemed to be the first battle field, being haunted by ghosts he wanted to rejoin the safety of the army, but quieted those thoughts. He wanted to run and kill the people who hurt him and his friends. The end represents him going crazy and clouds are the dreams. He went to kill bowser but he died in the battle. Rip goomba...

Who ever made this is a smart, he shows us how bowser forces his army to die at the hands of mario, how a goomba has to see his friends die painful deaths before his eyes, when you become mario and kill the wall of goomba's with mario's face it shows how goomba is undergoing deep psycological trauma, we can see that from the heart beat and the disortion effects, so seeks destroy the giant mario statue as a way of "solving his problem", then realises the problem was bowser sending them to die so he kill's bowser then proceeds to kill himself to escape the pain...

I've always thought these goombas looked more like flightless owls than corrupted mushrooms. Later versions look better of course, but these are very owl like.

So I'm the person that made this level. I never expected it to blow up like this did when I uploaded it almost 4 years ago! Like many of you, I'm realy exicted for Super Mario Maker 2! But yet, I did have a "true meaning" in mind for this level, but I've never actually seen anyone quite get it right. I might make it a tiny bit more obvious if I have to remake this in Super Mario Maker 2, but here's a big hint if anyone cares about it now (maybe not, this level may be past its prime lol): There's a big hint towards my take on the meaning in this level in Super Smash Brothers 4! Don't let my "authors intend" disuade you though, I loved reading the many ideas people had about this level on the internet!
