I remember in Mario Odyssey, just entering Cascade Kingdom for the first time, repeating myself over and over "My god this game is lovely." The visuals drew me in and popped in a way I've never seen before. The music was incredibly adventurous. I had the dumbest and most sincere smile on my face and it stayed for at least 10 minutes after i shut the game off. With Breath of the Wild, I quietly marveled in shock and awe at the stunning visuals and the (at the time) surprisingly quiet wilds of the Great Plateau. I experimented in the game and discovered how truly free I was, completely unshackled from older Zelda conventions and able to play the game in whatever way I wished. Both of these games gave me countless hours of bliss and utterly destroyed what my idea of a game from either of those franchises could be like. They're both hugely important to me and I love them to death.

Yami I can't read big words lol
@benlink202forever6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say BotW is revolutionary in the game industry, but definitely within the series it comes from. Wasn't sure what you were saying when I read that so...
@ShallBePurified6 жыл бұрын
I was referring to how it opened up the overdone open world genre. By introducing the climbing mechanic, it makes exploration so much more fun. Future open world games will take inspiration from BotW, which is what makes it revolutionary. Odyssey was great but the genre will remain very small besides Mario games.
@benlink202forever6 жыл бұрын
How do you know that other future open world games will take inspiration from BotW? I get that the climbing mechanic is great and all, but you claiming that it will change open world games forever is reading too much into the future. I definitely can see how the climbing mechanic can change how the Legend of Zelda games may change in the future, but will that change other open world games? That's hard to read into. And climbing isn't that revolutionary, every assassins creed game has done it before. However BotW made it much more clear that climbing is the best way for you to explore, and I love that they made it that way.
@ShallBePurified6 жыл бұрын
It's a speculation. I'm not saying it as a fact but a prediction. Ever since BotW, people have been comparing more recent open world games to it. A lot of open world games are open world for no reason other than to say the game is open world. Plus the climbing is only one aspect that I mentioned. There's also the physics and chemistry engine where things like fire interact with the world instead of select objects. There's the rain which actually affects gameplay. For example, surfing on grass in the rain is faster than surfing on grass when it's not raining. Climbing isn't new, but climbing on any surface (except Sheikah stuff) is. Assassin's Creed only allows you to climb certain ledges which makes it feel more restrictive than what BotW does. You see a cliff in the way of your path? Instead of trying to find the specific ledges that the game is programmed to allow you to climb, you can just climb wherever you want. Also, speaking of Assassin's Creed, that game was revolutionary as well. It introduced the climbing mechanic to modern games and the tower mechanic for open world games. BotW just does these much better than AC does. The existence of BotW has already had an impact on the gaming community. It raised the bar of what an open world game can be. Not to mention future games in the franchise will only add to it. How big of an impact it will have on future games we cannot say until it happens, but BotW will certainly be an inspiration for future games, much like how Ocarina of Time was.
@BriAngel4765 жыл бұрын

They're so incredibly mild that they're almost unnoticeable. It usually happens when you A. Move along a power line (I think the New Donk one specifically) B. Hit a lot of items/enemies at once. Usually all you see is an incredibly brief stutter as it drops to 50fps for about a second and then it's right back up at a solid 60.

I think botw will be better remembered. Once I did the darker side of the moon, I really didn't much feel like playing mario anymore. Honestly, there's still a lot about Mario 64 that I like better. It was that sort of Metroidvania lite sense of secrets and backtracking and slowly opening up that world that I really loved about that game. I'd love to see a sequel to Peach's Castle with modern design thrown in and a more Metroidesque world design. I'd love a Harry Potter game if that too. The second Harry potter game for psx was a nice go at that, but they never went back to that design

Same. Mario Oddysey is quite boring, but just has the odd really cool bit dotted in among the boring parts, and they don't make up for it. Being a T-Rex, and playing as bowser, and the bosses, etc were all awesome but the main gameplay of it gets tedious and I can't play it more than an hour at a time without wanting to play something else. I loved Spyro back in the day so much, and no other 3D platformer has managed to recreate that feeling Spyro did and still does when I go and replay them, emulating them on my tablet or whatever. Just the running about, the jumping and gliding, that's the fun part of spyro, let alone the stuff you actually do with the movement. And the other characters, like the flying bird, and the kangaroo that can jump 100ft in the air, I spent hours at a time just jumping/flying around these levels, putting completing the objectives because that'd mean I'd have to stop all the fun jumping around. And the skateboarding mini game. Mario running and jumping in Oddysey is nowhere near as fun as that. The cool parts as I say are awesome and fun, but that doesn't make up for the rest of it

It's crazy how much just... being able to climb, adds. The way the world is designed is basically identical to Xenoblade Chronicles X, which in the early parts has you doing clumsy platforming on rock outcroppings that you're not even sure if you're meant to be able to reach, until you get a mech that can fly around. Comparing the two, MAN, Xenoblade would've been a significantly better game if you'd been able to climb things.

'Breath Of The Wild' managed to nail exploration in a way that very few games have been able too. The game made me feel a sense of excitement when exploring and that's something I haven't felt since I was a kid. That being said, the combat is lackluster, at best. They definitely need to work on combat, enemy variety and boss battles in the upcoming game. I didn't play it until it had already been out for about a year. I put in 105 hours of playtime and I didn't experience a single instance ot slow down and never experienced a glitch. They had already patched all of the bad stuff out by the time I started playing...I haven't Played Odyssey, so I can't really say much about it. I will definitely be getting it now, though.

I love both to death but I think I'd have to go with Odyssey. I adore BotW and agree with your points but... that story... it wasn't the best imo. I know it's mostly about gameplay but the story was hyped up to be an epic adventure that ended up being 70% flashbacks with every Divine Beast/region playing out the exact same. Like you said, Zelda took more risks, but Mario made less mistakes.
@olimar10346 жыл бұрын
When was it hyped up to be an epic story? Also the game is not meant to have a huge complex story. If they did that Breath would not be as open as it is. Having a complex story would completely ruin what they're trying to accomplish in Breath.
@ShallBePurified6 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, having less mistakes doesn't make one game better by that alone. I think Odyssey had fewer flaws and issues, but I still love BotW more. It has more to do with personal preference, because that's ultimately what opinions are. I am not a platforming fan or a 3D platformer fan, but I love exploration games. Having one giant world to explore that has some story and continuity to it was more enjoyable than exploring multiple smaller worlds that don't have anything to do with each other. And I also love puzzle solving so Zelda is like the perfect franchise for me. I've never been a Mario fan.
@MasterSwordRemix6 жыл бұрын
It didn't need to be super deep and complex, just not the same sequence four times then a final boss fight that had no real weight to it. I adore the game, I just think they could have been more creative with the story.

I agreed with you on most things but there three things I disagreed with. 1. There aren’t enough “wacky” kingdoms: While the actual graphical design doesn’t change so to speak throughout many worlds, the actual assets in them do. For example, the wooded, ice and sand kingdoms all have the same graphical design, but the color palette and assets within them provide enough variation for me. Many of the creatures present are unique enough on their own to create an entirely different feel. 2. There isn’t ever a frustrating part to Odyssey: As someone who has 100% completed the game, there are many moons that require an unnecessary amount of retries and frustration that take you out of an otherwise amazing game. 3. There aren’t any moons that truly feel like filler: Again, as someone who’s collected all the moons, many of them feel super unnecessary just to bolster the game’s length Although I’m really critical in the points above, I enjoyed this video a lot and completely agreed with you on the BoTW points. Keep up the great work!

Both games were absolutely stellar IMO, and among my favorites in each series, which is saying a whole lot. I did end up getting all moons and Korok seeds (though I totally used a guide for the later), which is a testament about how much I loved them.
