Super Metroid - 100% TAS -

This is my latest TAS of Super Metroid. It is a 100% run that finishes with a ingametime of 00:34, as compared to my previous run which finished with 00:36. The overall time for the run is a couple of seconds higher than the old run partly because this one aims primarily for ingame time whereas the last one was optimized for realtime, but also because a new, more accurate, emulator was used which causes a lot more lag.
Tool Assisted - these games are played using a emulator at super slow speeds and save states. The goal is to provide entertainment by showing off game glitches and beating the game as fast as possible.

There is even a category for beating the bosses in reverse order (Ridley, Draygon, Phantoon, Kraid). So you have neither Varia, Gravity nor Space Jump. Believe me, the lava pit is the least of your sorrows....

If you think this is hard go watch Oatsngoats play the ROM hack Super Metroid Impossible, it makes reverse boss order look like a walk in the park, oh yeah and he has a deathless run video too.

Just imagine. You're Ridley, you've fought this samus several times before but this time your ready. You hear she's touched down on the planet and you begin your wait. Then 40 minutes later she's killed all of your comrades, taken all the loot from the planet and kills you in about 10 seconds

It technically is at 60 inputs per second, which means every frame is an input, which can be used to create 60 down presses per second, allowing for the ultimate in precision manipulation. It also usually exploits every glitch known to man. which is why it has its own separate world record category.

This is the ultimate TAS for Super Metroid. The newer ones are full of wall manipulations and ammo exploits...this is much more pleasant to watch

He can travel through the background, there's probably a better path, but since samus is confined to a tiny cross-section, we can never see it.

Ridley has access, since he's a Space Pirate General, and can fly through Space and Lava, which makes navigation of his Home Base on Zebes a piece of cake. Samus however is forced to break every Lock she goes through.

I died when it defeated Phantoon so easily. I know it's a machine manipulating it, but that missile stun lock was insane.

TAS doesn't mean its done by a machine, it usually means that a player is playing, but is using an emulator or some version of the game that allows them to advance the gameplay frame by frame, meaning they can make very precise (frame-perfect in fact) inputs, making use of many exploits obtainable in a regular playthrough, and some that are to unrealistically precise (I forget which game it is but there is a trick that involves pressing the L and R shoulder bumpers on a GameCube controller 30 times per second or so, which while theoretically possible, isn't really unless you slow things down)

I think I've played this game too much and seen too many TASs of it. I'm calling a bunch of the tricks and optimizations in the run. It's still fantastic to watch, don't get me wrong. Good job Cpadolf, always giving us the best.

Thank you for the run!! I'll be watching this 5 more times at least in the next week. So impressive and entertaining, and blew me away how you've mastered the techniques from the other latest speed runs to make this one a mind blowing 2 minutes faster than your last video. Samus shoulda been butt-naked at the end of the credits after making that run. One question: How did that door get open at 30:18?

I like watching TAS Bot destroy a game but the normal TAS I’m not so crazy about, I’m more impressed to see someone destroy a game with pure skill, there are a few speed runners who come to mind with this game in particular.

I'm not sure what is worse: the pause every other second for an item pickup, or the fact that I blinked and missed half of norfair.

The clock decreases by either 0:02 or 0:01 per frame, and the patterns in which it goes depends on the amount of realtime frames that have passed rather than ingame. The escape in this run is exactly as fast as previous runs, but the clock is lower because the last tick down in some rooms is 0:02 instead of 0:01. Theoretically it's possible to manipulate this but it would actually make the run slower because of the need to add lag to do so.

Interesting, I really didn't think the timing would be possible. Of course already having shot 3 and starting as far from him as possible makes it a bit less timing sensetive but that's still pretty crazy, although as you said probably too random to ever be a reliable strategy for a speedrun.

It's a tool assisted speedrun, which means it's basically a computer playing. So no humans were hurt in the making of this :)

The run was optimized for ingame time. Ingame this method is about 1 second faster but it is slower in realtime of course.

could shave off 3 seconds from brinstar first entrance. When you go through to get super missiles early. you grab the missiles first then leave the room to reset the doors, you can do a single loop by going for the two regulars and reserve tank first, then go up for the supers, then grab the easy missiles on your way out.

This is simply done by monitoring the RAM-addresses where the ingame time is stored.

Cpadolf is right of course! But in real time you can optimize the fight by hitting phantoon with like 11 or 12 missiles in a row with the same technique as the TAS one, you hit him 4 times (if 5 he diseappears), he moves in and out the room during that time you go all left or right, and when he comes back in the opposite corner you fire missiles while going forward without running. The quickkill is the same thing except that it allows to stop after you shot the missile so you don't go far :)

Also I'm curious to know how you are able to tell the difference between the "in game" speed verses "real time" speed, I wouldn't think I could tell unless I edited out the door transitions/power up sequences, then timed it. But then again I still would have to be guessing at what point of the door or item pick up the clock started and stopped. Thanks for the response!

The door is opened with a "wrap around shot". What it is is that basically under very specific circumstances you can get a shot fired to the right to open a door on the left side of the room, but I don't really know the mechanics behind it.

How'd you do the brinstar speed booster skip without using mach ball? (Genuinely curious, im not an expert at this game, the most i know is shinespark, wall jump, mach ball and beam combos, fairly simple and common secrets in the game from what I've heard) Edit:oh and blue suit, though i can't ever pull it off Edit two:can somebody explain how he blue shifts from speed booster without running very far like... at all

At 17:24, you do something with crouching/uncrouching after grappling. It appears to lengthen how far you go. How does that work with losing speed? Is it just frame precise morph/unmorph?

It doesn't run in the intro, during the cutscene where Ceres explodes, during door transitions and during the item pickup fanfare, but unless I'm forgetting something it always runs otherwise.

That is called a Crystal Flash. If I´m not mistaken, you get below 50 of energy, do a morph ball, hold L, R, down and drop a power bomb, than it gets you back at full health, in exchange for 10 missiles, 10 super missiles and 15 power bombs, I believe.

Clifton Jefferson 398 frames per fanfare times 100 fanfares, divided by 60 frames per second, divided by 60 seconds per minute translates to 11 minutes 3 seconds and 20 frames of fanfare

I love it when he uses a wave super missile, (because how else do you explain that) STEALS THE SCREW ATTACK the fights golden torizo FROM BEHIND, the proceeds to just take that super missile, eat the boss, lay a power bomb at the top, finish off torizo and all just in time to head back to the top and use a crystal flash to clip through the top and STEAL the missile

Is that Phantoon speedkill really TAS only? Is there any luck manipulation involved? Because I wonder if at least a more similar tactic should make more sense compared to the current X-Factor method used by other leading speedrunners?
