Legend of the Mystical Ninja was such a special game when it came out in the West. It was so different and so Japanese. I felt like I was transported to a different world playing it. Everything in the game was so new, different and fresh. Man, I miss the Konami of the 80s and 90s.

Tekkaman was my fav character in an insane Wii fighter game Capcom made with Roll, Megaman, Yatterman, a lot of Darkstalkers and Street Fighters. Two characters took up the entire screen.

The Legend of the Mystical Ninja SNES game is actually a part of the Goemon series which started as an arcade game called Mr. Goemon and was the first SNES game in the series. The Japanese title for the first SNES Goemon game is Ganbare Goemon: Yukihime Kyuushutsu Emaki and was later rereleased with its sequel on the Kessakusen! Ganbare Goemon 1+2 GBA compilation.

This is a fantastic list, I love multi-genre stuff, also glad to see some love for Zoku: The Legend of Bishin. That's a neat one, memorizing the road layout for the driving parts is a bit tedious, but the beat-em-up parts are very well done, also the soundtrack is awesome!

Kmart used to sell used SNES/GEN games in the mid 90’s in generic packaging and one of the games was Firestriker for only $5. I still have it to this day and I never got far into it as I sucked at the game haha! I may have to try it, again.

Games like this are why Retro gaming is so important to look back on. There were so many games back then that did experimental, weird things and committed so hard to their vision. I think the period lasted from the Atari age all the way to about the end of the PS2/GC/Xbox era when games started to become widely accepted by the average person and not just nerds only. After that games seemed to do their best to emulate "the popular thing". Genre defining games like Arkham Asylum, The Last of Us, and Dark Souls were so influential that all competition began to do their best to safely copy their mechanics for widespread success. So many games nowadays can be described by "It feels a lot like XXXX but has a little bit of YYYY too".

Lawnmower Man was very strange as a kid. It goes from a side scroller sci fi shooter into a first person...where am I? Where am I going...?

Fun video. Nice to see Pocky & Rocky 2. I love that one. It was a little odd at first compared to the first one. As for Vortex, it sounds like what they originally intended Star Fox to be before Nintendo narrowed its scope. I've read interviews that they wanted to make it more open ended and free. It sounds like Vortex is more like what they had in mind. Not having to hear the chatter of other characters is a plus.

Holy shit man, thank you for showing legend of the mystical ninja. I could not remember the name of this game for years. I played this when I was a kid and it was great.

Don't forget the anime that goes with the Tekkaman Blade game. The english version was called Teknoman. I love that show. It's like an early version of Neon Genesis.

That Tekkaman Blade game was one of first I emulated on early SNES emulators in mid to later 90s as I loved the Teknoman series on fox kids here in UK which was a dub of the Tekkaman Blade anime. 🙂

Rampart. Weird real-time-strategy/puzzle/shooter that's a lot of fun but really hard to describe.

Super Famicom Gundam games can fit into this category sometimes. There is a turn based one (with mostly complete translation patch) called "Super Gachapon World SD Gundam X" that on the surface seems like a Super Famicom Wars clone but on a hex map instead of a grid, but when you get to the combat the game turns into a weird 2D shooter fighter hybrid. To clarify that, the controls in combat feel similar to what you would expect from a 2D scrolling shooter of the time, but rather than scrolling through a level, you are fighting the enemy units within a set area like a fighting game. The units also have life bars. The game has a handy auto combat feature if you don't like the weird twitchy combat controls (combat feels very fast). And when fighting against ships, the combat is basically like the Famicom Wars games. Unfortunately, there is no story mode, so I guess this can be a bit TOO much like SF Wars at times. But if you like the Gundam series, and don't mind the weird Super Deformed graphics that a bunch of Gundam games from this era had for some reason, then you might enjoy that the game features a bunch of recognizable Mobile Suits. There is another game that I unfortunately only played as a kid (and it had no patch back then) that was much stranger. All I can remember from it was that the combat was done in a sort of first person mode, with you having to rely on your radar to essentially dogfight enemy Mobile Suits, but the actual attacks weren't in real time, oddly enough. Instead, you had a variety of attacks you could choose from, and when you had an enemy in your sights, you would hit the appropriate attack and then a sort of cinematic animation would play, where you would either deal damage, destroy them, or miss. So I guess it was like a weird first person dogfighting in real time with turn based combat slapped on top type of thing... Hard to know if it had RPG elements since there was a lot of Japanese text that I couldn't read so I was never able to really get far and this was well over a decade ago when I played it.

Tekkaman Blade is a classic anime by Tatsunoko like Cashern (which inspired the Megaman series btw) in 1992. Tekkaman Blade is also a playable character in Tatsunoko vs Capcom for the little story :)

FireStriker is the illegitimate lovechild of a Zelda and a soccer game. But it was so cute that you didn’t mind the public knowing.

oh MAN I played the hell out of that Pac-Man 2 game. It was the strangest thing, but the various areas you could go to and explore, as well as the people you could interact with, was pretty interesting.

I was so excited to pick up vortex for another Star Fox esqe experience and yeah I didn't put a lot of time into this one it was tough to figure out

I’m also just curious to see what you dig up. You still always manage to surprise me even today on games that just managed to slip by. @snesdrunk Tekkaman Blade is an old anime I use to watch back in high school.. In fact I think it was one of the first mech anime's I had ever seen. It awesome that there was a video game based on it.

The Legend of Bishin reminds me of a game I used to play on the Atari ST. Think it was called 'Techno Cop' Was awesome

I know of a few NES games that defied genre quite a bit. The Guardian Legend is one of my favorites. It's a vertical shmup that, when you clear an area, transitions to a Zelda/Blaster Master sort of dungeon crawl. Another one that I only saw and was freaking crazy was "Wurm: Journey to the Center of the Earth". It had side scrolling shooter sections, vertical shooter sections, platforming sections, and the bosses were fought in first person gallery shooter style. Unlike some multigenre games, each section was pulled off pretty well and had an interesting narrative.

I know one on Famicom, I believe the game is called Fuzzical Fighter or something similar, but it is a horizontal shooter mixed with RPG elements, as you go to towns and their shops to buy items and upgrades and equip them, or visit an inn. It does have a translation patch.

I loved King Arthur's World back in the day, used to have passwords written down for the best levels especially the boss fights!

I wish they would make a Vegas stakes 2. The random encounters in that game made it head and shoulders above any other gambling game.

My suggestion is Rampart, a port of an arcade game from the 80s. You and an opponent take turns building castle walls out of Tetris style pieces and then blowing them up with cannonballs. Whoever ends a turn without having a contiguous wall loses. It's one of my favorite 2 player games. It's pretty simple but super fun and the winner gets to make the loser walk the plank!

Kawa no Nushi Tsuri & Kawa no Umi Tsuri aka Legend of the River King series by Harvest Moon creator Pack in Video. This series not only predates Harvest Moon-the first game was for FC in 1989- but it’s a fishing rpg/zelda-like adventure game.

If you enjoyed YamYam, I'd give Panorama Cotton on the Genesis a go. An English translation was just released, and it's honestly a fantastic game in the vein of Sega's Super Scaler titles like Space Harrier.

Hey, you can never, ever mentioned Ganbare Goemon enough. I wish you added a few clips from the third installment because that game is a blast! It features all characters with their unique abilities and a nice variety of different levels. It really deserves a translation patch
