A look at SNES games that were way too hard and/or complicated as rentals back in the day. Don't write these games off entirely!
[0:45] Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
[1:41] Ys III: Wanderers From Ys
[2:26] Breath of Fire II
[3:25] Shadowrun
[4:11] Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen
[5:11] EarthBound
[5:45] SNES shoot-em-ups (UN Squadron, Axelay, Space Megaforce, Gradius III)
New SNES-related video every Tuesday, and something else (Genesis, Game Boy, whatever) on Thursdays

When SNES drunk says: "have a great rest of your day." I really believe it. Thank you for making such great content so consistently, it's like going home for me. Your voice becomes my own voice and I remember my youth playing these games. Even though I was more of a Sega fan only dabbling in the SNES arts, I find SNES drunk's honest analysis of the games and specific opinions and preferences to be very unique but relatable, and definitely plan to buy one of those sweet t-shirts. Thanks again

This entire list (along with many other games) is my Super NES childhood, and the games I couldn't beat at the time were Ys 3, Ogre Battle and Shadowrun. I eventually ended up cheating to beat Ys 3 because the game was too brutal and I got too frustrated with dying for such minor mistakes. I never owned a copy of Shadowrun (for either system), which was something I regretted as I spent too much money renting it and trying to get through it. I also didn't ever own Ogre Battle (a HUGE regret), but I had an older friend who loaned me her copy for a good long time. Unfortunately, I was (still kinda am) a perfectionist and didn't like losing Alignment and Reputation, but I also preferred to grind levels (which adversely affects those two things if you're too strong), so I couldn't figure out how to finish the game. I have infinitely more patience now, but less time, so one of these days I'll spend a week just playing Ogre Battle. As an obsessive kid, I remember playing Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts for like a month straight to learn and memorize everything, then I eventually beat it both times in succession. Haven't been able to do it again since, though since I've forgotten so much of the later levels. Ah, to be young and without adulthood responsibility again...

Breath of Fire 2 was my favorite of the series, mostly because of its beautiful storyline. Trouble was, I got stuck just after getting Sir Frogadocius, and didn't realize the next step was that spot inside the castle... 😂😂😂 Gave up for a bit, then I found the guide for the game and I was hooked.

What really help me when I was a kid was having a big brother that would teach me how to play the game. I would watch and learn and improved upon his playing, then he'd do the same. I remember renting Super Ghouls and Ghosts a few times and finally beating it only to realize you needed to replay the whole game again... Earthbound was my first JRPG and I feel in love, I think it coming with the players guide was what made me rent it and what helped me enjoy it.

1.) Ogre Battle truly is one of the most underrated games ever. It's VERY time-consuming, but with around twenty different endings, a massive soundtrack, amazing pixel-art, 82 different units, tons of secrets and thirty huge battle-maps, it's totally worth it. 2.) Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is a piece of art waiting to be discovered by anyone with enough grit to master it. A true gem. 3.) Shadowrun is just really different and very much late 80s/early 90s futuristic. It's a prime example of an inspired and inspiring game because it took such a unique route. It's a good idea to give it a try With all that said, I have faith in the other games on your list, even though I never played them.

I rented Super Ghouls and Ghosts as a kid. I remember that, despite putting it down to Easy difficulty, I still managed to get right to the end... only to beat Astaroth and get the "start over and play through the game again, only this time with the Princess' bracelet weapon" message. I assumed this actually meant "You can't face the real final boss on Easy difficulty, go up to Normal" and since my rental period was almost over I just threw in the towel and considered it beaten. I couldn't have imagined they ACTUALLY wanted you to beat the game twice in 1 sitting _regardless_ of your difficulty. Ogre Battle, though, I tried again recently... and couldn't stand it. I made a bit of progress, but ultimately got really pissed off and rage quite once it became apparent that the game didn't actually follow its own rules, while the enemy cheated shamelessly. The instructions you issued to your party in battle (target strongest, target weakest etc) did NOTHING WHATSOEVER as your party would ALWAYS attack randomly (usually aiming for maximum inefficiency and pointless dispersal of damage) while the enemy would all just target your party leader, beat him down, and defeat the entire party. Once it became obvious how unfair this was, I just quit without remorse. Don't tell me I "don't understand the game", I can understand PERFECTLY when a game is just saying "fuck you, you lose".

Couldn't help but notice that Space Ace wasn't found on this list. Good, that game was the ONLY SNES game I've ever considered terrible by every measurable standard. Super Gn'G was the second SNES game I personally owned. Friend of my dad's sold it to him with Super Mario World for $5. He warned him to tell me how difficult the game was. I loved it because of that, and it's totally a game of memorization. That reset to the beginning with that crap bracelet weapon though...most rewarding ending to a SNES game ever because of it. Oh, and since you mentioned shooters, check out Blazeon. Holds a special place in my heart. Only game my mom ever bought me by doing her own research. Told me that she talked to the guy at Video Game Exchange (Remember them?) about the games I liked, and determined that I would enjoy that one. As someone who always deduces what gifts I'm given, this one caught me totally by surprise. Brings a smile to my face every time I play it because of that. Technically, there are better shooters on the SNES, but they all make me think of this one. It's tough, it's calculating, it's a blast.

Good thing that makes grinding in Breath of Fire 1 and 2 a lot easier is that when you die you lose half your money but keep all your experience (like Dragon Quest). So if you get beaten by a boss just try again and you could well be strong enough by the time you get to it again

I remember Ys 3, that game was way to easy to break with a turbo controller. In the first dungeon close to the entrance you can position yourself in a way that a bee monster will endlessly spawn (a lot of monsters did this). I would leave the game on for a day & I'd have a max level character that nothing could stand a chance against.

That's an interesting analysis of super ghouls n ghosts. Every jump, enemy, and power up has to be taken into account in order to progress. The game demon souls comes to mind because each enemy encounter has to be taken cautiously even though you know exactly where they are each playthrough.

I played though this game all the way to the end and could never beat the last boss. I always struggled with the 360 blue laser beams on normal difficulty because they would ALWAYS hit me when i jumped on the rotating platforms but i found a crazy trick on how to get past them by increasing the difficulty settings to maximum because the laser beams speed were tied to difficulty settings. The lower difficulty slowed beam speed but higher difficulty increased beam speed so i was able to hurt and kill him much easier. It's still funny after ALL of these years later that increasing the difficulty made the last boss easier to beat. That almost never happens in games :)

I think i played them all as a kid. Shadowrun was not my style as I preferred conventional Japanese graphics. I played it as I had nothing else left at the time but I was glad I did as I got sucked in and it is one of the top SNES RPGS. Ogre Battle I loved from the get go and played that over so many times. Recently got a repro of Let us cling together. Even got Ogre Battle 64 even though I have never touched an N64. Ghouls and Ghosts I played on the arcade so while the game was hard I felt I was already ahead since death didn't require more money. Breath of Fire I & II I quite liked. Can't recall too much about them though. Y's franchise - no matter how bored I got and how many times I loaded that up I never got into it. And I got pretty damn far in Paladin's Quest as well as 7th Saga if not completing them. Those weren't that enjoyable and were lower tier RPGs in my book.

Agree about Shadowrun. It has some really tedious flaws, like basically the whole keyword system. Even finding the first weapon is a pain. But once you get going, it's a rewarding experience. Can't say the same about Super GnG. You like feel of it? Like how your guy moves all lethargically, how you can't control him in the air, how he passes right through platforms, and how most of the game you're just sitting there waiting for enemies to move into a position where they can finally be attacked? Yeah, I don't know about that. Having to beat it twice to get the real ending really negates any feeling of accomplishment on the first run. Don't know how the GnG series became so revered, but there are far more worthy series worth playing.

Breath of Fire 2 has grinding issues, but I still like the game itself mainly because of the nostalgia. Going to giant monster isle is a good grind spot.

I always rented video games from my local Coborn's another MN-based store, it also had the bonus of being a grocery store, so I never needed to bug my mom too often to go there and she'd end up picking out a movie too. And I've never heard of Mr. Movies or Video Update despite Blockbuster and Hollywood Video being present in the area or that could've been a reason why and maybe because I wasn't around for the early days of the Super Nintendo. I remember being absolutely devastated when they stopped renting out N64 games. Also I would've never guessed you were from Minnesota, I can never hear other American accents besides stereotypical Southern and whatnot.
