Hi Darren, Awesome video ---- Next time you go out there I would bring a medium sized Black or Dark Brown stuffed Teddy Bear on a metal rod or wood stake and set it out front of the hive as hot or pissy bees will often go after and attack something dark colored over white colored. Thats why they attack a black camera or black fuzzy mic cover. Learned that from the Killer Bee guy in Ariz. You might want to look at planting some Lemon Queen Sunflowers for late summer nectar, they do not grow super tall and have more than one flower per plant and are deep rooted and very drought resistant and so they produce nectar with very little water. Bees love them!

Awesome video. Thank you for sharing. The 1st hive was light on honey / nectar so maybe that's why they were so defensive? Do you think because the flow is late that might be the reason there were no queen cups and both hives had not swarmed yet? Hope the girls you brought back via the Apimaye do well, looking forward to that follow up.

Most of my bees are local bred mutts and I infuse them with some Wildflower Meadows queens (VSH Italian) every couple of years. These bees should t normally be this way but was the weather conditions and their lack of food. If they continue like this then I will requeen them. I think you mean carnolian?? I’m not sure how they fare here in Oklahoma. Thanks for watching.
@highlandhoneybee
@highlandhoneybee Ай бұрын
@@JeromeBeeFarm He may actually mean Cordovans which are a subset of the Italian, tending to be as gentle as the Carniolan, but unfortunately I've found still have the robbing trait prevalent in the Italian bees. I started out with Italians, then moved to the Carnies (my favourite). Unfortunately I had a hard time keeping those southern bred bees alive thru our crazy Ozark highland winters so now I run all mutts I originally caught from feral swarms. They overwinter beautifully year after year, rarely ever need to add feed, and whilst not as laid back as the Carnies, not too spicy.

@@highlandhoneybee yup cordovans, this was an artificially inseminated Queen, little bright yellow fuzz balls with reddish legs and stripes lol I work the hive in a tank top shorts and flip flops and my kids help often. No stings on anyone from this colony yet 🤞 when I am feeding I swear they recognize me and line up when I open the top box for my hands to bring in the syrup 😅 instead of flying and bumping they crawl onto my hands and wander around until I put them back near a feeder or the entrance Edit: barnyard bees runs all local mutts and swears that genetic diversity helps keep them calm 👏

Hello I agree those are big . Also I would bet the reason they have not swarmed is because there is no flow so as soon as things start getting good they may hit the trees if there are any trees around. You did about all you could do at this point . Our flow has stopped. I am guessing because of all the rain we have had an I am hoping it comes back soon. The bees have just about eat up there stores so I have been pulling supers so they do not get it all . What a week it has been.🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️. Thanks for the trip in a different yard . Thanks

About smoke- does all smoke affect bees the same?(provided it is non-toxic) does the material being used have a significant impact on how the he bees respond? Like more green material producing a cooler smoke versus a hotter can with all dry material.

About smoke- does all smoke affect bees the same?(provided it is non-toxic) does the material being used have a significant impact on how the he bees respond? Like more green material producing a cooler smoke versus a hotter can with all dry material. Also, could you design a super box to feed from the outside to the inside through some kind of media? I have seen people have jars attached to feeders inside empty boxes, but what about using the shell of a box to do double duty? Have it hold frames as normal and make it have a modular port in one spot where you can add a feeder? I’m not a beekeeper, so I don’t even know if it’s a good idea or not.
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm Ай бұрын
I'm sure someone out there has done a smoke study for different materials. There can't be fire shooting out, or you'll burn the bees, so just the red embers in the bottom. Basically you want organic material like burlap or cotton. Most folks use something like Pine needles. That's what I use. Pine cones also make good smoke. Jar feeders aren't good for feeding on the entrance, they attract other bees that will come along and clean out the jar, and then clean out your hive and leave your with a small population of traumatized bees. You don't want to feed when you have honey supers on, you will beg sugar water in your honey, and that's just not real honey.

Do you have Africanized bees there in Oklahoma? I get hot hives like this here in Bandera county TX with Daughter queens. They are hard to work, can't see. I've been told the only way to know if they are Africanized is genetic testing.? The tradeoff is these hot hives produce a lot of honey. I now duck tape ankles to my boots and tape up my gloves. My hot bees try hard to sting and if there's a way to get to you, they'll do it. I'd like to know when you work them in the future have they calmed down?
@JeromeBeeFarm
