Originally nicknamed the elephant because of the sheer size of the engine, actually. Fantastic car and refreshing to see a pedigreed car actually being driven, as opposed to merely stored somewhere safe. Nothing - I mean *nothing* - sounds like a 426 hemi at full song. - Ed on the Ridge

Growing up we owned a 68’ I was a little kid and didn’t understand the significance of the car, mom drove it mostly but people stared and point, sometimes we got mobbed by people that asked about it, wanted to buy it,wanted to race against it, tried to steal it ect’ it started to get unnerving it was like driving the Batmobile around mom traded it in for a olds 98 Holliday coup which was a very quality car 455 rocket 👍but we miss the charger and wonder where it wound up.

I've read that the base engine for the '68 Charger R/T was the 440 Magnum, and the optional engine was the Elephant 426 Hemi.. I once drove one of these cars with the 440 Magnum and it could really scoot down the road. I can only imagine what one with a Hemi could do.

Upon returning from his Army time in Vietnam my uncle went to buy one but the insurance was double the cost of the 440 Magnum. His R/T had the 440. Blue with white vinyl top. I remember riding in the car as a youngster. His family owned it until 1981 or ‘82. A stranger approached him and offered cash for it and packing to move out of state he sold it on a bill of sale receipt. Good thing he did because two weeks later he was approached by leo who tracked the R/T back to him. Seems the Charger was used as a get a way car used in bank robberies in the Bay Area and was eventually found abandoned after another successful escape. Uncle was cleared due to bill of sale and alibi of on being on guard on duty at Walla Walla prison during the robbery dates. He had a nice ‘57 Bel Air too.

It was even less at the rear wheels If a bare engine does 500 hp on the bench, it will drop to 410 with the muffler, belts and air cleaner attached.
