PLEASE USE HIGH VOLTAGE SAFETY at all times. Not knowing your safety can incur injury. Now, lets be honest. Every High Voltage scientist needs their power supply. You guys asked for it, so we're doing it! Today we'll show you an extremely simple build that outputs over 10,000 volts AC, from a non-rectified transformer, at a relatively safe current. These transformers, from ionic cleaners, are some of the few without internal diodes. Also - Cheers to Bogdan!

Hi I just came from keystone science and I love this channel already! I have a suggestion that not many people on youtube have built, and that is making a homemade x-ray machine. All you need is the x-Ray tube and about 40 kilovolts
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 7 жыл бұрын
Honored you enjoy us! As per the x-rays, I have put thought into doing so in the future. Great suggestion. I have over 80lbs of lead (will be doing a plasma-lead-melting video soon) that I can use to shield from x-rays. The trick is how to do it in a controlled fashion. Very tricky. I have the 40kv, no problem. But the tube may be a little more tricky to attain.

I guess that generates lots of negative ions as well? If you don’t know about those, you should look into it... The benefits are amazing. They literally make you feel better. Generated in nature by lightning and waterfalls, they are the “fresh” in fresh air. They bond with smoke, dust, and pollen causing them to stick together and they just fall out of the air to the floor.
@nivingoonesekera

Nope not anymore there are research papers proving that negative ions doesnt affect any brainwaves to make you feel relaxed.
@FredtheDorfDorfman1985
@FredtheDorfDorfman1985 5 жыл бұрын
Yes negative ion generators tend to use flybacks that feed AC into Cockroft-Walton voltage multiplier cascades with negative output that is fed to a set of needles that discharge negative ion corona into the air and a fan blows air through that carries the ions out into the room. Ionic breeze machines like this one use plates charged with the negative high voltage, and electrode wires on the upwind side of the plates with the positive charge to electrically charge and move the air, like a high voltage lifter does, and air pollutants like pollen, mold spores, dust, dust mite feces, animal dander, etc cling to the plates and can be wiped off and discarded. They clean the air electrically and disperse negative ions to improve the air quality.

It’s easier to use a fluorescent ballast (the driver) that has the two yellow wires. There’s no guess work involved. Just connect one of the yellow wires to one pin on the primary and the matching color, (depending on which side you use) which is red or blue, to the other pin. Easy as that. Just saying!

I built a high voltage generator using a flyback, but wound a custom primary on to the exposed side of the core and used a 555 timer and a mosfet as the driver circuit, it gave arcs like this and if I put a reasonably strong audio signal into pin 5 I could get music to play out of the arc! I also built a 1KW ZVS flyback driver which gave me bright 8 inch arcs from a small flyback out of a portable TV.

Isn't air breakdown voltage more that 10kV/cm? AFAIK it ranges between 10 and 30 depending on electrode sharpness and, if that's a 1" gap, it should be at least 25kV, shouldn't it?
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 7 жыл бұрын
battlekruiser great question. Air's dielectric breakdown is 30kv/cm between two 1" brass spheres. This is the electrical standard at STP. However, when you have sharp points, the electric field gradients are much more intense and longer sparks are achieved with lower voltages. The two high voltage leads are very sharp. This transformer indeed outputs approximately 10,000 v. If I attached it to two rounded spheres, the spark length is approximately 4mm

I recently found an air ionizer at the thrift store, but upon disassembling, I found that there was a small box connected to the ionizing spikes. It says "input 120 vac 50-60 hertz, output 7kv dc negative." theoretically that would contain a transformer and diodes, but it could have some sort of electronic circuit. The whole air filter works anyway, so would it be worth trying to recover a transformer, or should I just use the whole thing like it's supposed to be used? and should I buy the transformer off amazon, or find/ try to make my own? sorry for a lot of questions, but I want to make sure I don't blow up my parent's basement...

Hi dom! It should work with 240 volt as well. However, only use the CFL inverters sold in your country, for specificly 240 volt input (from wall). Basically, the output will then be the same as what would happen here in the USA. On that note, greetings from Seattle, Washington!

why is the arc AC so high frequency? shouldn't it be the same frequency as the wall AC?
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 7 жыл бұрын
Ah, that's a GREAT question! And I wish I had mentioned this in the video: that driver uses transistors to switch 120v into 300vac at very high frequencies. It's a driver, and less of a transformer. Usually any driver that uses transistors will be run at higher frequencies. Since the high voltage transformer is driven at that higher frequency, the output arc is higher frequency.

Do most fluorescent ballasts do this?
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 7 жыл бұрын
Not all. Some are pure inductors which, when plugged in, give a small voltage boost to ignite the tubes. However, those types use a momentary voltage spike, at 60hz, which is unusable for our purposes. usually those ballasts are heavy, iron filled inductors.
@dash8brj
@dash8brj 6 жыл бұрын
Also, as a bonus, the fluorescent fitting doesn't buzz at the mains frequency like the older iron core ballasted ones do. The iron core ones also wont work with the transformer out of the air purifier, as its designed to run at high frequency. Just like an old fashioned TV set flyback transformer :)

Clever, I haven't heard about that mix before. I didn't know ionizers used ferrite transformer. (but I know plasma balls do) Are you going to do more power supply videos? There is the TV flybacks, the AC stuff, mains frequency, high frequency, the safe and the deadly. And cover DC & AC and the difference in behavior? Some people seems to really overrate the voltage of Tesla coils too, also a nice topic.

I fully agree with the over ratings of Tesla Coil. Pulse rate and EM envelope drastically affects spark length... I do plan on doing additional power supply videos! Thanks for the comment.

Hey! Love the channel! I have a question.... I’ve been working on a similar project but the question I have is what exactly did you do with the remaining wires. I know the ballast has 4 output wires and you have to use 2 but did you do anything with the other two? Did you just cap them off?
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 4 жыл бұрын
Hello, thank you! Yes, I just cut them off and capped them.
@ruby_R53
@ruby_R53 3 жыл бұрын
if you definitely do not need to use the remaining ballast wires, I recommend just unsoldering them, then you will have a large cable that you can reuse

very nice explanation and sexy neat presentation. I believe you will become famous in the upcoming days. Question: is it a flyback transformer because it is also found in old CRT TV .

Every video of mine has been shot in an RF shielded room, with grounded mesh placed on the walls. All my filming locations have been customized, which has not been cheap. Very few of my videos involve any kind of interference producing devices as well.

I stumbled upon this while experimenting years ago and was able to achieve 100kV. I seemed to have gotten lucky with the flyback I used cause I couldn't replicate it with any others

It is funny how each flyback can produce drastically different results. 100kv is impressive.

@@PlasmaChannel i'm sure this has a lot to do with wire gauge, the Q factor of the transformer, the type of driver waveform (sine, square, sawtooth), and its natural resonance range. i built a transformer from scratch that consisted of just 1 layer of 32AWG enamel wire on an old EM choke core that was about 2.5 inches long and an inch wide that must have produced at least 20kv at the right frequency with a square wave, given the arc length
