The power and fury of Super Typhoon Haiyan as filmed by storm photographer Jim Edds of extremestorms.com Opening scene Jim is against a coconut tree when he realizes the coconuts have not fallen. Seconds later a 4 coconut cluster falls from the tree in front of him sending one over his leg and another over the bluff. Later Jim unable to get back to the safety of the resort lobby, jumps in the pool to escape flying debris. Near the end is the full on Category 5 winds screaming through the Leyte Park Resort in Tacloban, Philippines.

I am glad you made it through that terrible storm. I live in Tampa,Fla and have seen my share of storms over 40 years living here. Nothing ever hit Florida like Haiyan. Dorian was the closest I can think of that came close to Haiyans intensity. Take Care

harold almoite Thanks Harold, reporters play it safe and don't get into the wind like I did. There are interesting in live broadcasting which has some constraints. I'm also braver than they are, I take risks based on years of experience and I am very comfortable around water - my true element. It was scary though when I couldn't get back to the safety of the lobby where everyone else was.

Jim, didn't tacloban city measure 148 mph gust before it broke at 7:00? I am pretty sure the strongest gusts reached 170 mph+. I did a frame by frame calculation of wind speed at 3:12. And I can conclude that the wind speed between 67-85m/s

My best guess is that the peak gusts were upwards of 150 mph in this particular clip. That would put these winds right up there with the Charley gas station video and the video of Hugo in Puerto Rico as arguably the strongest winds captured on video I've personally seen myself.
@KevinLuWX
@KevinLuWX 7 жыл бұрын
The wind speed recorded in Tacloban was 148mph before it broke at 7:00. The strongest winds occurred in Tacloban at around 7:15-7:25. So according to my estimates, wind speeds in Tacloban peaked at 170 mph. 3:12 is definitely stronger than Charley gas station video

Kevin Lu l Storm Chasing Hi Kevin! I didn't realize that there was an actual wind speed measurement taken in Tacloban. Do you have a link to the data? Thanks!
@KevinLuWX
@KevinLuWX 7 жыл бұрын
hurricaneadventures Got it from WeatherUnderground which get data from the local weather stations. Was monitoring that morning and the data just froze at 237km/h for the whole day. Not sure if you can get to past wind speeds though www.wunderground.com/q/zmw:00000.1.98550
@JimEdds
@JimEdds 7 жыл бұрын
there was no peak wind measurement in Tacloban at peak winds as there is no min pressure from the Guiuan radar site during the full passage as power went out. The lowest recorded on the paper graph is 910mb but likely lower. A simple battery powered barometer would have recorded the pressure. When you see wind speeds of 195mph or higher for Haiyan that is estimated based on Satellite interpretation. As the storm winds picked up all power went out and a massive storm surge flooded the coastal areas. So we will never know the true wind speed on the ground. In addition weather survey teams did not get in there before the cleanup began making wind estimates even less reliable.
@KevinLuWX
@KevinLuWX 7 жыл бұрын
Jim Edds Exactly, one problem with radar sites is they always go offline right near the peak. Same thing happened with Typhoon Haima, Virac radar site went offline right before the innermost core hit it.

Amazing power of nature! In fact, that wind force is exponentially increasing to it's speed 195mph winds must be true lethal conditions. Much more wind energy than 150mph winds. Maybe unpossible to film those kind of winds without being in a life threatening situation. Great job to document this historic storm.

@JimEdds
@JimEdds 8 жыл бұрын
+crewcutter2030 so true, for me all I had to worry about was the wind coming off the water and just blowing through the Leyte Park - which was on a hill. Knowing that I had a bit more freedom to move around. If I was in town I'd worry more and don't forget the storm surge - that was worse than flying debris. Most people died in the storm surge. I did get hit by a few pieces of that ceramic roofing blowing in the wind. It cut the back of my leg when I tried to get to the lobby. You can see the roofing material shattering when hit by debris in the "Journey to Tacloban" video I produced (also on my channel). It made an awful scary sound. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/acCYfNecyNmdoas.html

Grunt Bladefin non taken, I jumped into the resort pool because it was between the shore and where I needed to be - the safety of the lobby. It just so happens that there was a really good shot there I couldn't pass up and I figured it was safer in and under the water than out in the open. Eventually even the pool was unsafe as the wind picked up even more. After I got my pool shots I crawled out of the pool literally on hands and knees and ran for the closest villa. Tried to run to the lobby buy ceramic roof particles peppered my bare legs resulting in a deep cut, although it was not that long. I didn't release this until I got back to the US but sure felt the burning hot sensation. It was another 25 min before I was brave enough to attempt the lobby sprint again. This time somehow making it.
