When FIRST4MAGNETS challenged us asking to come up with some projects with magnets for our workshop and home, we didn’t quite realise how many ways we could use magnets to make life easier.

Adding a magnet to the tape measure adds a whole new dimension to places I could lose it!

Might help when I drop it down a cavity or between studs too, spent too long fishing levels and tapes out of walls! There must be half a dozen hidden in the house. 😂

Shocking Tim didn’t unleash one of the great dad jokes with the stud finder - pointing it at himself and saying it works.

The big magnet in a container is a great idea. Definitely need to use that over my driveway to collect screws and nails that get dropped. 👍🏽

Love the stud wall finder!! I’d buy one if you did a small batch :)

I think that I like the stud finder the most. I've used magnetic stud finders in the past on my plaster and wood lath walls and they just don't work as the magnet it too weak. With your DIY version I think a much stronger magnet should do the trick to find the small nails holding the lath to the studs. I'm also hopeful that a stronger magnet version can detect the nails holding our subfloor planks to the floor joists through the old oak flooring.

What does every DIY KZfaqr use their workshop for? Building things for the workshop of course! Only joking, I love a good magnet hack, I use them all over my house for holding doors closed, radiator covers on , etc.

It's so true. In fact mine is mainly used for storing tools, junk and housing pet rabbits overnight! One day it will be in action properly!

I like the one which Peter Parfett did. Extension lead (four plug in a row type) mounted on a piece of wood, with magnetic in like you light mount. This then will stick on the side of a machine or router table. Less of a trip hazard and does not fill up with saw dust as fast

Great idea. Although having just put in 22 double sockets around and above the workshop I think I'm covered. That said, it still be a good option for additional camera chargers as we can stick it to the metal wall panels. 👍

@@TheRestorationCouple yep certainly works well, I wish I had come up with it! (Even without the metal walls)

Nice. I’ve always been leery about using magnets near the motor on things like the impact driver for fear of imbalancing and wearing it. Is that a thing or am I being over-cautious?

I did notice a couple of places that it was clearly picking up on the internals but the spot I used seemed fine. I had first put it lower down the drill but ended up knocking each time o hooked it on my belt.

@@TheRestorationCouple my Dewalt impact driver has its own magnet on the side of the unit and I love it, I keep a couple of commonly used bits on it so I don't have to go back to the cupboard every time and its brilliant, saves so much time and hassle looking for missing bits. Mine is very near the motor so I assume it would be ok anyway if Dewalt thinks its ok.

I wonder if stuffing something soft between anvil and magnet would help to stop ringing even faster? Something as rubber layer

Once I restore the anvil and oak base I will likely sit some EPDM or lead between which should also help deaden. May well work between magnets too. 👍

Regular super glue for the plastics, epoxy probably a better solution but seems fine for now. The wood ones was a PU gorilla glue.
