Sometimes you got too do what you got to do. Their is always a level of failures/losses in beekeeping that keeps one humble. But you still have a lot of strong hives for next year.

Hey Russell. Yeah, I used to hate combining a hive and would limp it along and try to save it. Experience shows it's best and get it over with and you will be better off in the future by putting those bees to good use in another hive. Thanks for watching.

Hey Vermiman. Good to hear from you. You must be bored, coming over here and watching bee videos. lol I used to hang on to small hives and try to get them through winter, and then they usually die out on a really cold snap. Over time, I learned it's best to combine them so they both get the benifit of a larger biomass that can survive better. It's tough though to off a queen like that, but she should have done a better job, lol. Hope you have a happy Thanksgiving down there where it's nice and warm. Take care.

This was a very interesting video. Those bees on the board at the end, you should've had them put different colored jerseys on so we could tell which side was which. 🤣 Seriously though, I think I saw a little fighting, or were my eyes playing tricks because of the time lapse?

Hello that second hive that you reduced was the same as the one I told you in your last video. It was very odd amount of brood ,larvae an I could not see any eggs but I did not have my glasses on also . I think I will be going back to check them out tomorrow. I will just have to see what all is going on then but very odd case . Thanks

Hi Kathy. I checked this hive again one week later and it had much more larvae in it. I guess the queen was taking a break. I'd never seen it so sparse and spread out like that. She filled most of it in by the next week. So, it should have plenty of winter bees now, if those larvae survived this last cold spell. I don't think there were enough bees in there to keep it warm. Maybe with the reduction it did ok. We'll see. Take care.

My eyes are not very good so most of the time I can not see the eggs or about all the time so that really screws me up trying to gauge just how they are doing. So cases like that puts my bees in danger because I am having to wait longer to find out if I have a little problem or a major problem with them. Hope you have a great weekend. I have a hard time seeing as well. I use a little flashlight sometimes and that helps. I tried a magnifying glass once, but it was worse. I think if I got a higher quality one it might work though.

Family is good and bees are hunkered down. I checked them earlier this week on a warmer day between cold snaps and had lost one. I put some sugar cakes out as well. Good luck!

This year was the earliest that I can remember. I posted a video on March 27th where I caught a swarm (a supercedure cast swarm, not from spring swarm cells) and the queen successfully mated and returned. Here's a link to that video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q5qfo8iCutvMeo0.html

Looks like EFB in that weak hive. Make sure you use plenty of alcohol on your tools!

Can you be specific as to what you are seeing that indicates EFB? I checked this hive later and it has a lot of larvae now. Seems to be fine.

That's good! A neighbor had EFB which was verified by our state inspector, and his frames looked a lot like what I was seeing in the weak hive - scattered brood and a lot of the brood was discolored, from tan to dark brown with few nurse bees. His entire yard (32 hives) ended up with it and he was told it can spread by gloves and tools that haven't been disinfected. Thankfully most of his hives survived, It's always hard to tell on youtube how things really look so hopefully your hive is fine. @@JeromeBeeFarm

Wouldn't putting the empty deep (to be robbed) on top of the other cause a robbing frenzy which would lead the robber bees to your weak hive?

I moved that box far away to be cleaned out. Yes, it does start a robbing frenzy if you leave it open setting out there. Once that starts, the robbers can overcome a weak hive pretty quick.

Hey Bill. Still here. Just not a lot going on in the winter. I scraped a few frames and power washed the foundation. Getting them reconditioned for spring. I figured that would be a pretty boring video, and probably get water all over my camera, so I just got it done. Hope you have a Happy New Year.
