The only reason we have the M3 GTR road car is because BMW was forced to produce them to even race in the 2001 series. In the 2000 season, there were 13 races, 12 of which were won by Porsche. One was won by the inline-6 e46 m3 "gtr". For the 2001 season they realized they needed a monster of a powerplant. So came along the GTR variant of the M3, which initially was BMW's homologated racing car. Same as the 911's. From my understanding the gearbox is what give it that whining sound. Even though this is not the m3 gtr everybody loves.

It's a bit misleading and confusing... The transmission you see in this video is a true sequential gearbox like you would find on a fully-manual motorcycle transmission. You can't skip gears, and it's fully manual. BMW SMG transmission is really just an automated manual, NOT sequential. That is, it's a regular H-pattern manual transmission, but just with electronic shifting and an automated clutch. SMG is an automated H-pattern manual transmission, not a true sequential. Also, with the SMG2 automated manual, you can skip gears. With a true motorcycle-style sequential gearbox, you have to shift in order, hence a sequence. The SMG tranny can be converted back to a regular three-pedal H-pattern manual if you remove the electronic and hydraulic actuators which control the clutch and add a third mechanical clutch linkage shaft directly in the floorboard assembly. You can also add stick-shift gates, so you can move the H-pattern shifter, manually. Just replace the electrohydraulic unit with a manual unit. And no, the M3 in the video is NOT a DCT. It's WAY faster than DCT, too. DCT is just a fancy type of automatic transmission. The E46 M3 in the video has a true fully-manual Sequential manual gearbox, three-pedal w/clutch + shifter. And let's get this straight... SMG is not sequential, it's a regular H-pattern manual with an automated clutch and electrohydraulic actuation. Also, DCT is not a sequential transmission, it's a type of automatic transmission, which uses two concentric clutch shafts for odd and even gears, in place of a torque converter.

to be fair, there have been both earlier and later versions of the e46 m3 gtr with an inline six, although this is most likely noy the original P54 racing engine (even more so since it's supercharged)

Nobody got it except the grant touring teams. Besides, there wouldn't be a point having a naturally aspirated engine in a time attack car.
