Talley's 1950's Supercharged Cummins engine equipped with a Telma electric retarder, at 2013 Brooks ATHS show, the retarder allows him to put a load on the engine and get hot, eight to ten-inch flames come out of the stack in a cone shape.

I remember in the 80's seeing flames out the top of the stacks of many older trucks. The best was a guy that blew his turbo that was leaking oil into the exhaust. The whole exhaust pipe was glowing red (at night in dark Texas) and a flame coming out of the top. Was fun to see-the smoke being created wasn't (if you were behind him).

This is just awesome. Personally I am a hardcore two stroke Detroit fan. I love them the most. But there is only one four stroke diesel I would ever own and that is the 275 Cummins. They are just one cool motor and I just love them. Thanks for the video!

My dad retired in 1984--he drove 50 years. He told me, the best Cummins ever made was the 275--from a purely performance, power, sound, nothing else ever compared. It was his very favorite, with a 400 series Hall-Scott butane burner 2nd.

Same here I'd like to find a old c60 Chevy and drop in a old 275 Cummins in it.

That's very cool. I have been in the cab of several farm tractors that you could see a flame out of the pipe but can only imagine that in a truck listening to the echo off a rock wall cut off a valley or canyon very cool

Ive heard dad talk of Flames from the stack. Sadly the only flame from a stack ive seen was the turbo on a 2000 FLD with a s60 detroit. Turbo got a little warm, it went white. Pretty orange flame out the single stack 12ft in the air . We should have 2 things on trucks still. 1) sleeper doors. 2) tall stacks.

The NHRS 275 (iron lung) Cummins was rated @ 275hp at 1900 rpm's. Anything over was actually over speeding the engine. "Keep the rpm's between 16 and 1900" is what I was told to do. I drove one for the first 5 years of my career starting in 1982. In 87 we dropped a NTC 335 in it, sure missed the 275.

I would be reluctant to run that engine as hard as he is running it, but it really does sound great as if in a good 'ol Peterbilt pulling 80K up 6 percent. Nothing ever compared to the sound of a good 275. Turbos took all that away, a shame.

is the same kind of engine that was in Duel movie truck when it was hauling for Union 76?

dalekrueger The original owner of the Duel truck was Union 76 at Broadway and Rosecrans---LA Terminal in California. That truck came in 1955 with a 275 Cummins. The Duel movie had that same truck well after Union sold it, and after it changed hands it had a 1674 Cat, 245 horsepower. I know, because I drove it.

***** our RFD had a old Diamond T that had a 3000 gal water tank they claimed it could do 80MPH fully loaded, It had a 220 cummins with a 10 sp RR, it is now in the Dixon Bros truck collection in New castle WY,they drove it from Solomon KS to WY, they wanted it because they had a another Diamond T with a consecutive serial number, the RFD traded it off on a S- Series Binder with a L-10 cummins in it

***** That would make sense why the Duel truck was painted brown - to cover the Union Oil Blue (They were blue in the old days before orange). I hope someone will eventually post some photos of the Duel truck when she was brand new and all decked in her Union Oil colors Ill bet that was a pretty truck coupled to the tanker.

AlaskaTrucker You are so correct about the blue---they called them "Blue Bellies", Union had many old Diamond T's that way.
