Inspired by old supercharged Jaguars and Aston Martins, Theon's latest creation is a 911 like no other.
There's a lot of clever engineering going on here. To bolt a supercharger onto the 3.6-litre flat-six engine, the original air conditioning unit was ditched and replaced with a new electric system, now located up front. And while the engine itself can be traced back to the 964 donor car, it's been overhauled with individual throttle bodies, motorsport-grade pistons, uprated cams and much more. But as John found out, there's a lot more to this 911 restomod than an extensive parts list and a fancy interior...

Yeah I heard that too and wondered what the hell it was- then it's all I could hear through the rest of the video- it's obnoxious as hell- that would pull me away from a supercharger right away- I've never heard of a "supercharger chatter" ever- not like a turbo waste-gate is known... Why would anyone pay $400k for a car with that noise? I love the car- but that would be a full stop right away. I mean you're off throttle as much as your on in normal driving ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ?!?!? I mean I can even hear it between shifts! Sounds like something is very broken...

At £400k, you can't just dismiss the money. It defines the car and generates all kinds of difficult expectations and comparisons. At this price, it feels like you're paying a £300k premium for the air-cooled vibe and not much else. You can take, say, a really nice low mile 997.2 Carrera, chuck £30-40k at it and have something truly fabulous. Or a 997.1 with a Hartech 4.0 build, which would cost a piffling £20k for the build, have the interior re-trimmed and some lovely dampers. Or maybe just a 997.2 GT3. It's hard to claim any of those would be less car than this. Sure, if you want the air-cooled thing, you want the air-cooled thing. But good god, the premium, it's just so hard to comprehend. Buy this car, put 20k miles on it and as it begins to look a bit worn, feel a bit tired and develops a few squeaks and rattles, the notion that it cost £400,000 will begin to seem quite preposterous, I fear. Ultimately, at this price the car seems less like a thing for driving and more like a thing for ordering, a device for spending money. I think what cars like this are all about is the idea of the thing, process of specifying it, the 'luxury' experience of spending so much money commissioning something like this. Realistically, these cars won't get driven. The owners will lose interest soon after acquisition. Because owning and driving the car isn't what it's about. And the vibe of the thing is slightly cartoonish and chintzy as opposed to serious long term driver's car.

I am the owner. I agree with some of your comments. But not with all of it. I think you are right that you can achieve wonderful cars and equivalent performance for a lot less money. But one thing I like about this car is the network of craftsmanship and engineering they support in the UK. And fear not it will be driven but will never look tired.

I understand what you are saying, it was a huge amount of money to build this car. There are so many companies offering similar work at similar prices, has it got a little rediculous? So glad the cars owner left a comment. I guess if you can afford to build the car at this cost, why not. Were it merely down to power per pound, I would go for a 996 Turbo and a light custom job inside and out. But im content with my 996 C4S, at least for now!

@@robinoconnor1203 The 996 turbo in an insanely good car straight out the box , they manage to combine the sound of the air cooled motor with some very basic modern comforts making a car that is stuck somewhere between 1995 and 2005 which is exactly what it is but I agree , some tasteful interior modifications would be interesting.

I agree with everything you’ve said. Fair comment. And 400k is a lot for a 911 of any description. But - the big but. If you can afford it then this end of the market (Singer) a hand built 911 to a bespoke spec appeals. To me a bespoke 911 speaks volumes about the owner. A class act that knows what he’s buying. Much better impression than say a Fiat with a dress on let’s say. (Ferrari). Can a Ferrari really justify the mark up ? Really ? I’ll put my stall out - I don’t think so. And the options list is a joke, they should be embarrassed. Not even nearly. Rarity? if they stick to the make believe limited number of builds that they claim. (BS). The days of these cars and other compromised cars being the only route to “high performance” are long gone. You can have four and the dog and get the same performance - so it all comes down to character and experience. And this 911 seems to deliver both.
@flat6croc

@@crustyclown8845 I'm not a fan of modern Ferrari, but you get far more car for your money from, say, a new 296 than a tarted up old 911. The engineering that goes into a 296 is on completely different level. And can't really agree about what a car like this restomod says about the owner. It's such an obvious fashionista choice these days. I'd personally be much more impressed by a 964 C2 that looked mostly standard but had been modified to drive really, really well. Moreover, if what you really cared about is the drive, you'd probably be in a 996.2 GT3, which is just about impossible to beat. But it's not fashionable!

It just skews the whole market.

I would LOVE to have enough money to buy one of his cars. Metallic green with that gorgeous saddle leather brown interior, but want the headrest to mimic classic Porsche seat rest in modern cars. Yellow Porsche paint on bottom of doors. But would prefer a complete light bar at top of the back window similar in width to the new Porsche break lights. And I'd want a modern Porsche steering wheel - even of the buttons don't work. And I'd park that next to my silver/cobalt blue Kaege 911, Singer DLS and modern 911 Turbo S. Then my life would be complete.

@chadderton
@chadderton Жыл бұрын
If I was in the market for such a vehicle, my money would be going to Singer. This is clearly a nice 911, but it just doesn't have the same level of refinement in it as a Singer does: the fit and finish, the smoke (9:01), the supercharger chatter, are reasons why it doesn't deserve that price tag. For a rough comparison, there's an immaculate, fully restored 964 RS currently for sale on Pistonheads for £169,995 and a 9,200 mile 997.2 GT3 RS for £214,995. So... for your money, would you rather have those two in your garage, or this Theon?

How do they did dissipate the heat that 400 hp produces? All engines are “heat engines” power = heat, period. Do they run it rich to cool it ? This is something I’ve never understood in air cooled resto-mods. If you asked another 200 hp out of a Continental or Lycoming, you’d cook the engine doing it.
