I see what I did here. I just made a batch. I'd put the recipe I'd come up with at 10% superfat, through soapcalc, but holy moly, it came out as though it was full grease. I believe it was the hemp oil which must have driven it up at an undeterminable level. How disappointing, it was quite an expensive batch.

Yes. I thought the same exact thing once upon a time too. There are lye calculators online that will help figure all that out for you until you begin to understand it. That's what I did.

So if using Shea as a main oil and formulating a 5% super fat, it’s really more like 12+%?
@Vrie.
@Vrie. Жыл бұрын
No, super fat is calculated differently. It’s the amount you want of excess fat that will not sopanify.

Any opinion or suggestions on this? 40% coconut oil 76 35% olive oil 12 % Shea butter 8% evening primrose 5% castor 3% oil weight sodium lactate 8% super fat. I'm trying to develop my go to soap recipe but I don't have unlimited funds. I've tested a few different proportions already. The recipe listed is what I've come up with. Before I go and make it again I wanted to see if you guys think it's ok

3:22 I don't get your math at all... You have approx .257mg of coconut oil per 1mg of KOH, so you can't just multiply. 257 by 9 because that's .257mg x 9mg If you want ounces you have to further multiply by the number of milligrams per ounce...........right? 🤔🤨

Can we consider additive as superfat ?
@Kaileynorriscreates
@Kaileynorriscreates 2 жыл бұрын
You can add the “ super fat” or extra oils after emulsion but it’s not a guarantee that the added oil will become the super fat. Super fat is determined by the oil that saponifies the slowest not the order of oil added.

1.65 x .80 = 1.32 (common sense level math) 20 percent of 1.65 is 1.65 x .20 =.33 1.65-.33=1.32 (easy to understand beginner math)

Lye is the catalyst that turns your oils into soap. When you discount your lye you are leaving some oils unsaponified or superfatted.
@lovecate1
@lovecate1 3 жыл бұрын
@@soaping101 I must admit I am confused. From your example of 9 oz of coconut oil and 1.65 oz of lye. What do you call it when you add oil to that without changing the amount of lye, as opposed to reducing the lye to 1.35 oz.? So instead of it being 9 oz of CO it would be 10.8 oz of CO and 1.65 oz of lye, or should this not be done?
