Thank you for taking the time to check out the review of the Ultrasonic Gooseneck leak detector! I posted links to the different kits available on Amazon and the factory's website for your convenience. I use my ultrasonic more for special applications such as hard to find leaks and verifications. Sometimes it's a easy to find leak so I also use my H10PRO & DTEK SELECT. My 3rd choice is a Tiff ZX. Each detector has strengths and weakness. I will go into those preferences more at a later date.

Thanks RR, works great where the other detectors don't. Not sure how it would be in the compressor room? Haven't tried it in there yet. Nope it don't matter what refrigerant. But keep in mind you'll still need a good refrigerant leak detector. It doesn't find every leak. it's really good at the weird leaks and really good at outdoor leaks. There's sometimes it just doesn't pick it up because of the type of turbulence that's created around the leak spot. A good example is flare fittings. They don't usually make much noise

One thing I wonder is , can you still use it in a noisy environment , like if there's another unit running close by , or on one circuit while the 2nd circuit is still running. I would imagine that you probably need silence in order for it to be proper effective. Still though , getting jealous , mate . the gas/liquid flowing inside a coil, txv, tubing may kill it and probably get ringing from compressor valves and bearings on motors in close proximity. best bet is likely shut the whole unit down.

I'm curious about the applicability for the ultrasonic sound generator for finding hairline cracks in heat exchangers. Have you tried using putting the sound generator inside a burn chamber and trying to pick up sound leakage from the supply duct side of the heat exchanger? I ask because the accutrak kit with all the bells and whistles is pretty pricy for just performing refrigeration leak detection, but it looks like it could theoretically work for finding cracked heat exchangers, too, which would make it very economical Has anyone tried it and have any commentary on that application?
@HVACRSurvival
@HVACRSurvival 2 ай бұрын
I can’t say I have tried it, generally, I try to use my eyes before I condemn something, so if that means pulling the heat exchanger out of the furnace and looking at it, I will, if I have a reason to believe it’s bad but I don’t see why it wouldn’t potentially work. As a refrigerant leak detector I’ll still side with the Inficon Stratus or Dtek3 as the best detector for refrigerant leaks. This is just another tool in the arsenal as I mentioned in the video, it’s not perfect and it does not find every leak.

I have never had much luck with Sniffers. I normally find them with my ear. So my question is, Why wouldn't you just use the sound detector if it finds them so easily? Why go to the sniffer and then the sound detector? Just looking for your reasoning to go to the sniffer first.
@HVACRSurvival
@HVACRSurvival 3 жыл бұрын
Ultrasonic doesn't find near the leaks that the sniffer does, they work if there is enough turbulence. It also depends the brand of sniffer you use. I have only had luck with Detek and H10. Fieldpiece, tiff, cps were problematic and we're disappointing. A lot comes down to learning the tools capability and technic used.

@@HVACRSurvival I found and repaired 2 leaks yesterday. Bubble soap couldn't detect. I again found them with my ear using a rolled up paper like a tube listening to each U bend. ended up finding 2 leaks that way. Which lead me to finding your videos. I have given up on sniffers. I will check the ones you recommend. If I hear that they work from techs, I will take your word. I guess the majority of the sniffers are more or less trash. but some do work. I guess I was hoping for a tool that had a higher find rate. But I guess the only way to have a better success rate is to have a good sniffer and the ultrasonic tool.

It takes time to understand the weird noises that a leak makes. It gets easier as you use it more and more. The first few times suck because you don't know what it can sound like. The smallest leaks sound like a tick and clicks. you can tell it works if it picks up your finger rubbing together or a eye lash blink.

@@smklimatyzacja88 if your wanting to be scientific then stop playing games with the kids toys and go strait to helium like the industrial boys use, helium particles are smaller than refrigerant particles. Ultrasound ONLY MAKES NOISE IF THE LEAK HAS A JAGGED EDGE, I haven't picked up a leak on a flare fitting yet. I've played with the $20k FLUKE and it didn't impress me for twenty grand. It had better filters and a full color screen but still didn't pick up a leak any different than these cheaper listening devices. And if the systems flat on on refrigerant then it should be an easy leak to find... where are you planning on getting hydrogen at? Give me a break.

The original version one came out in the 1990s and has been updated 3 times so far. The factory is located in NJ and these are made in the USA! The last time I spoke with them they said they do there own repairs inhouse but have a low failure rate and if you do have problems the labor rate was reasonable. I got my first one you saw in the video last year and haven't had a single problem with it. Basically, if you don't drop it or soak it in water it should last a long time. It is an audio device tuned for the 36KHZ-42Khz audio range and drops it down to the human range of around 0-4Khz.

will you been doing a video to diagnose a bad TXV??
@HVACRSurvival
@HVACRSurvival 2 жыл бұрын
If I run into one I will. It's generally not difficult to determine. If you have proper subcooling but the superheat is not correct and you have proper airflow than the only thing left is the TXV. This all depends on whether we're talking about residential or refrigeration. This is also assuming that the TXV is not adjustable and there's no flow restrictions in the refrigerant circuit.
