.This stands alone as the greatest instrumental interpretation of this breathtakingly beautiful song. No other horn player can match Derek's magical warmth and virtuosity.

@@superlast Thanks for agreeing. As a professional singer myself, I gladly applaud Derek as the greatest horn player I have ever heard. He is simply matchless.

This is ABSOLUTE The best ever. Who has negative reactions to this let's hear him play this live. This is pure emotion on the merits. And even though he had to re-sit for the last upper C it's still the world's best live performance of this piece. I would give anything to hear that live . SO JAMES , I'm going to the concert in MAY this year in Belgium Please get DEREK FOR that SOLO on the show. PLE......A.............SE. And I ( not only me) will be the most lucky guy on this planet .

making the trumpet players in the background in the james last orchestra look like beginners this man, pretty awesome, soft and yet powerful - that's the spirit.

Let me shre with you that I've been enjoying great instrumental music since prohibition days, and Derk Watkins takes a classic from the 1960s and owns it. This horn-man is one of the best ever. Brilliant performance!

How to have your cake and eat it. This is pure icing. Gorge yourselves on this wonderful track. For this alone, Watkins deserves to make lots of dough. Derek surely takes the cake! Best wishes, and love, to one and all from Jarrahdale in wonderful Western Australia.

My first ever memory of the James Last sound was this solo. When I was 10, in 1997 I saw him in Birmingham where he did 'My Way' It is such a pity he's no longer with the orchestra!

Derek Watkins left the James Jast Orchestra in 2005. Today he is currently visiting Professor for trumpet to the Royal Academy of Music, lead trumpet of the BBC Big Band, and gives master class clinics at music colleges around Europe. (With acknowledgement to Wikipedia - however I did attend the same school as him!)

unforgettable sound. The whole arrangement is so incredibly unforgettable. I always thought it was fantastic how James Last managed to make individual solos so outstandingly load-bearing. He has heard in his soul what is beautiful. I could listen for hours. Played incredibly beautiful and soulful. Unique!

I havnt got videos, but I do stuff across london and the south, and the depth and passion of young musicians these days is greater than ever. Come see some of the music college big bands, or some of the big bands in west sussex and hampshire! we all put our heart and soul into it! I myself am 17, and live for performances like this, and big band music sets something errupting in me! so passion is mostly not dead in the music of the young!

Depends what you mean by 'the original'. The original 'MacArthur Park' was written by Jimmy Webb and first released in 1968 by actor Richard Harris. MacArthur Park was covered over fifty times, including jazz composer Stan Kenton and trumpeter Maynard Ferguson. This live version by James Last reflects the original and gives a great platform for Derek Watkins too.

stimmt, da hast Du wohl recht! Habe ihn auch kürzlich erst gehört - er ist wirklich der Wahnsinn!

Seen a comment down below on how someone was impressed with that really high note at the end(dbl C)...which in my opinion means nothing compared to the beautiful musician ship/jazz embellishment skills he displayed from beg -5.14. With/ or w/o a dbl C, this is one of my favorite renditions of this tune and Derek is truly a beast of a trumpet player.

Having played this myself back in the 70s- 80's and you have ot remember the composition is changed forthe flug vs a hi octane trumpet section. James Last was known for this style ... and the song isadapted for this performance as you hear. Maynard (rip) and others were just fantastic in their own way. Am sure Bill Chase performance would be unique too (rip)

Derek Watkins é o principal trompetista da Orquestra James Last ( nome artístico do maestro alemão Hans Last ) não posso precisar se Derek Watkins é alemão de nascimento, mas mora na Alemanha e toca na Oquestra James Last desde 1976.
