Superman II Metropolis Battle Re-Cut

This is from my hybrid cut of Superman II (1980) (which is also known as the Lester Cut because of the switch of directors during the film's production) and Superman II: Donner Cut (2006). I know there are a million hybrid cuts like this out there, but I just decided to take a stab at it myself.
There aren't too many significant changes, I just took the Donner Cut version of the battle and added parts of the battle from the Lester Cut that I liked and thought would add a slightly different perspective to it.
So enjoy, and if you have any suggestions, feel free to comment below!

It always cracks me up, when Hackman/luthor says, "oh thank God" when Superman arrives; and when Zod looks him, he quickly says "I mean, get him!"

It's shocking how alleged fans like Bryan Singer...and the *&#% they have doing his films now...have managed to capture...absolutely nothing of what Reeve brought to the role--nor have even tried to, really. But indeed, the man was practically superhuman in real life--he'd recovered 70% of sensation in his body and significant motor function after having his skull separated from his spine. THAT is not supposed to happen.

In all sincerity, I find this fight a lot more riveting than the one in Man of Steel. The crowd is involved, the atmosphere is electric and when Superman shows up, he looks like a BOSS. It's a relief when he shows up. And it looks real. The props, the buildings crashing and the pacing of the fights as well the as the editing. Man of Steel looked like a video game. No room to breathe and enjoy and appreciate the fight. This is just poor joy from start to finish.

I don't know man they both look pretty fake. I like both of the movies but honestly both metropolis battles in both movies were over the top and silly, for both their times. I personally like the MOS Faora fight in Smallville. it wasn't too crazy and really gave weight to superman's powers. like seriously in this scene. Zod throws him and it's just a broken windshield? nah..... a kryptonian, no matter who's side they're on, is gonna cause some damage!

Incredible as these versions of the Kryptonians are 100 times more imponent and intimidating than in Man of Steel, with that look of a generic warrior of heavy armor and high technology. It's just proof that to create villains that be a threat you don't need thousands of pretty special effects. The presence of the actors alone is sufficient when they are made for their role.

+stickman3 I guess you never saw MOS, because whatever comparison you tried to make you grossly inflated. In MOS 1:45, 3:00, 6:49 x 100. How about Superman letting his Dad die over a dog yet he can expose himself to a bunch of bratt ass kids on a bus. This Superman he outsmarts and learns over his opponents. MOS he gets his ass kicked continuously and learns nothing. There is no comparison..I'm glad they made Superman of the 70s and will always be a true classic, It makes it easier for me to easily forget about the current Superman.

6:07 When Non is thrown through the building there's a quick scene before Superman emerges from the street showing a woman with a shoulder injury from the wreckage. I loved how despite the seriousness of the battle there's well timed humour mixed in ...a bit like James Bond's multiple encounters against henchman Jaws in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) and Moonraker (1979). This is one of many things that makes this battle superior over the MOS version.

The big difference and something I wish they would have put into Man of Steel is that Superman is still trying to protect citizens while he fights. Without that they made it look like he didn't care about anything but killing Zod.

It's sort of hard to fight and save people when you didn't have time to learn about being a better hero and when you are being attacked constantly by a guy who wants you and the planet dead in real scenario Man of Steel is what would happen there'd be no enemy gives you time outs so you can save people

Your right but I would have to argue that this IS Superman we are talking about. Their version of Superman isn't developed all the way yet and they put him in a world altering situation before he was ready. Like in the comics the situation he learns from is Jonathan Kent's death were he can't save everyone, but they changed his death in the movie a bit. Its cool I will wait until the sequel to see how much I like the new Superman ;)

The Man of Steel fight was more fast pace and aggressive that this fight. If two superhumans did fight there would be a lot more destruction, death, and buildings falling. Plus how is he going to save people if Zod is constantly throwing punches at him. When he stopped to save people in Man of Steel he was taken by surprise. Subduing Zod should be his only priority because if he takes his eye off Zod and gets killed then everyone dies.

@@warofdarknessfang I remember him even showing remorse though. Christopher Reeves when he blows up the concrete wall above the people, has a look that he knows he made a mistake or that lives are in Jeopardy and he feels bad about it. You get none of that from Henry Cavill character

This is why I hated Man of Steel. Because the real Superman would not do what the Superman in the stupid Man of Steel did. Superman knows he is like a god to humans and feels he has a moral duty to protect them because of his upbringing from his human parents and guidance from his natural born parents.. He doesn't destroy cities to win a fight.

I love both "Superman 2" and "Man of Steel." But you MOS haters say Superman lead Zod away from the city here in Superman 2. But here he is having an all-out battle in Metropolis and destruction is happening. It's LATER that he finally decides "It's time to lead them away from the city." You MOS-haters make it seem like Superman flew up to the Daily Planet and said, "General, care to step outside and follow me back to my Fortress of Solitude?" But instead he battles them FIRST in Metropolis, punches Non through a building, throws Zod into a Coke sign (product placement) and Supes himself is thrown into buildings. You MOS-haters are hilarious hypocrites lol.

Not only that ... the only way he got Zod to leave is by Superman himself leaving thus letting Metropolis be at Zod's mercy. Luckily it worked out as Zod didn't hurt anyone else but that was gamble as Zod did grab Lois... ... MoS' Zod already said he was going to kill everyone ... so leaving wasn't an option. MoS Zod would have just killed Lois and everyone else if Supeman left.

***** You make some good points. Thank you for your response. And an even bigger "thank you" for responding in a respectful manner (since respect for others doesn't happen much on KZfaq). On your point about Snyder and the camera - I think one of his biggest flaws is that if it's not written in the script/story then he won't film it. He doesn't really think, "Maybe I should add this extra scene or situation just incase the audience might get confused or not fully understand this or that." Either way, I'm glad that David Goyer is gone as story writer & script writer. If the new script writer gives encrypting detailed saves for Superman then Snyder will film it. Maybe in the follow up film we'll see more "heroic-looking" scenes of Superman saving things like cats in trees or saving a grandma crossing the street at risk of being hit by a speeding bus (I'm not trying to be sarcastic by saying this because I actually think these types of scenes will add to the film). By the way sir, your "old timer" ideas are great and hold weight because good ideas come from both old-timers and new-timers. And a lot of the time I often agree with "old timers" more so than newer generation folks. Anyway, thanks for your feedback.

Let's not also forget about Zod blowing up several cars with his heat vision and Supes doing nothing to stop him for several moments. Also, the funny thing about the "leading Zod away from Metropolis thing" was that Superman had no idea that Zod would follow him. Zod didn't even know where he was going at first if memory serves and Superman didn't try to bait him to come after him. Imagine if Zod decided to vaporize the city after Superman left. He's real lucky he didn't.
@JazzyZenBrotha
@JazzyZenBrotha 9 жыл бұрын
huntcd2012 That is another excellent point about Superman 2! You're absolutely right. Like you said, "Superman had no idea that Zod would follow him." General Zod was satisfied by Superman leaving, with a big smile on his face he says, "So, he is a coward after all." He was ready to rule the earth and destroy more of Metraopolis. But luckily Lex Luthor told General Zod about Superman's Fortress of Solitude at the North Pole. But if Zod had killed Luthor, then Zod would've just destroyed the remainder of Metropolis and killed millions of people. So in fact, Superman never "lead Zod away from Metropolis." - Simply put, he got lucky that Lex Luthor was alive and even knew where Superman's Fortress was.
