The polar opposite of Batman. Batman is who he is, Bruce is the mask. The juxtaposition is incredible, as Bruce was born a human, and has to put on a suit to become Batman, yet Batman has taken over his consciousness, to the point where Bruce, the actual man, is the mask, and Batman, the costume, has become the man. Whereas Superman, or Kal-El, born a Kryptonian, a man who is NOT human, yet becomes human by how he was raised, accepts that Clark is who he truly is, and Superman is his mask, when biologically, Superman IS who and what he is. In a sense, both men have become their masks.

Or we are never just one person and those identities can change over the years. Sure Bruce has a party boy persona he plays up to throw people off the Batman trail. There is still a genuine Bruce he shows to Alfred, sidekicks, lovers, and other heroes in the no. Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne occasionally get together to discuss personal issues. No Batman isn't just a job for him but it's just a facet of his personality. Superman is a persona that's grown as well. This is one of the two main versions of the Superman story, the second one being the other way around (with Clark struggling to understand his place in the world until he finds out he actually is Kal-El). I agree, I love this version of him.
@Hibernicus19683 жыл бұрын
This show was based on the 1986 John Byrne Superman reboot in the comics, and in that version of the character, Superman is just a public persona Clark adopts to allow him to use his powers to help people, while still being able to live a somewhat normal human life as Clark Kent. You'll note that Christopher Reeve's Superman, which was pre-reboot, was quite different. In that version, like the pre-reboot comic version he was based on, Clark Kent really is a disguise and Superman is the true persona. This is why Reeve's Clark Kent doesn't mind looking clumsy and clownish. Clark's not the real him anyway, so who cares if Clark looks like a buffoon and his coworkers are always shaking their heads or laughing at him? Of course, that complete difference in personality does make it at least a _little_ more believable that a pair of glasses would be enough of a disguise. Interestingly, that same post-Crisis on Infinite Earths reboot in the mid-eighties seems to have transferred the clownish alter ego idea to Batman, and Bruce Wayne publicly played the part of a buffoonish, not-too-bright, Bertie Wooster-like rich playboy, and, once again, he didn't mind looking like a clown because Bruce Wayne wasn't who he really was, and Batman was his true identity.

I remember reading from somewhere about Christopher Reeve telling the casting director for Superman that he was all set to playing double roles. The director corrected him and said that he's Superman all the time, and Clark Kent was just an act. This is my favorite L&C episode because of how it broke that Superman mold, and it was amazing. People say Superman is boring because he's basically a nigh-invincible superhero who can fly, who can freeze and melt things at a distance, bullets literally bounce off of and can turn back time. His one weakness is a rare metal that's not even found on this planet. All the troubles of the world felt contrived beside a literal god with that kind of power. If they had kept Superman as human as possible the way this show did as outlined by this one line, he might have been more interesting.
@axebomber21083 жыл бұрын
It didn't break anything because it was just doing what the comics were doing at the time. And in my opinion, it's just yet another change to the character that makes him less unique and more like other characters in an effort to make him palatable to people who think he's corny and boring. That's why I hate the changes. I like the way he is and I'm sick of the constant bending to the will of people who'd rather be watching or reading Spider-Man.

For those who doubt, look at at this way; he was born Kal-El, but he never got the chance to be Kal-El. Why? Because, he was sent away while he was just an infant. His Kryptonan life as it might have been never had a chance to take root. He wasn't even aware he was from Krypton, his own birth name, nor his birth parents names, until well in to adulthood. Clark grew up as I'm sure many orphans do, wondering if his birth parents simply didn't want him for some reason. (Such a heavy notion for any child to bear, sad.) Once, he landed on Earth, the kindly Kents found the baby, named him, Clark, elected to raise him as the THIER son. As young as he was at the time, Johnathan and Martha are the only parents he could possibly remember. Being Clark Kent is the only viable life he ever had. Clark developed some extraordinary abilities, starting in his teens, but kindness begets kindness. Thanks to the Kents upbringing, Clark sought to use his extra talents in a positive way. The Kents weren't jusk kind they were wise, they warned Clark that 'if people found out about (his unusual aspect,) they'd lock him in a lab, and dissect him like a frog" After college Clark bopped around the world, putting his abilities to work clandestinely, then moving on before people could figure out the truth about him. When he came to Metropolis, Clark interviewed at the Planet, was introduced to Lois and was immediately smitten. That's when he made up his mind that wanted to stay put. Of course, Metropolis is a major city and he had the 'powers problem' to deal with. The idea for a disguise, so he could use his powers openly, stemmed from something Lois told him; she said, "from now on, do what I do; bring a change of clothes to work.' Clark fleshed out the idea with his parents, and Martha designed costume and The Outfit was born. After he performed a very public rescue, it was Lois, whom gave him the name 'Superman', in an artical she wrote. The rest of the world's press picked up and and ran with it. That's when the genie was out of the bottle, Superman was born and Clark was stuck with him. Our guy ment what he said here; 'Superman is,what he can do, but Clark *IS* who he *IS*. As for Lois, her view if Clark was initially very negative, in her eyes, he was a 'hack from Nowheresville, and Mr Greenjeans', she was very dismissive of Clark. After Superman cane on the scene, the difference in Lois, is like night and day. She refers to Superman as 'Greek God', right in front of Clark, and she gets very gooy eyed when Supes is around. As Lois and Clark work together, he slowly began to earn her respect and, tbe did have a friendship, in a professional sense, but she didn't think of Clark in a romantic way, by the time of this episode. Lois was still holding to notion that Superman might come around to romantic interest in her as,well. The reason Lois so upset is not only that Clark wasn't the one to tell her his secret, but a villain did instead. (Spoiler Alert: Clark never tells Lois that he also, Superman. At least not,directly anyway.) The bad guy isn't kind about it either. He taunts and mocks Lois, in a way designed to make her feel 'galacticly stupid' for failing to figure out the truth on her own. Lois didn't take into account, that trust is a two way street, and given the Jeckel and Hide mentally that she had been displaying to Clark and Superman, that maybe he didn't completely trust her either. Clark didn't really want Lois love him for his powers as the Alien Superman, but as the person, the human he was raised to be; Clark Kent. Clark knew that at this time, Lois was not at point that he needed her to be for him feel comfortable opening up, so he couldn't tell his truth to her.

First to comment? That's just Super! Anyway, I remember this scene from Lois & Clark so long ago, and the "Superman is what I can do, Clark is who I am" line is the absolute best thing Superman ever said. It's just a simple yet powerful statement. This show was outstanding.

This is how I wish Batman was written. I'm a big fan of Batman, but at the end of the day, he's just some orphan in a bat costume. Contrary to what others think, I see Bruce Wayne as the man and Batman as what that man can do. That's kinda why I like Batman: The Animated Series so much. In the end, we always see Bruce Wayne. He shines through his cape and cowl. We see a human with emotions and feelings. If Batman were the true identity and Bruce Wayne was the mask, then why does a dead Thomas Wayne's disappointment terrify him? Batman shouldn't be afraid of a dead man's disappointment. Bruce Wayne should, especially if that dead man is his father. I love it when superheroes can be human. It just builds so incredibly onto their character.

I feel like writing a comment here just because I see a lot of people seem to think that this quote is wrong. Clark is not stating by saying that clark is a disguise for him being superman. In fact he is saying the opposite, he is saying that superman is his disguise for the use of his powers. When he was raised on the Kent farm he was raised to be one person Clark kent, a man with great gifts. (There was no duality in that moment, no superman) He has always been one person through out the whole story Clark Kent, he only became superman when he realized he couldn’t use his powers something that also make him clark kent, while at the same time living a normal life as clark kent. Yes he is superman but superman is just a flashy costume meant to disguise clark from being noticeable to the world.
@friedfrog54475 жыл бұрын
But Clark IS a disguise. He's not really clumsy and goofy, he doesn't need glasses, his shoulders are not actually slouched, his voice is not actually soft. All of this is just him trying to disguise what he really is in order to fit it.
@dpdevinmperry975 жыл бұрын
Gabrielle Kpanlin that is in other superman adaptions. But in this one clark does not act like a clumsy head. He is just always perceived that way in comparison to superman.

It's understandable for Lois to get mad at Clark for being Superman and it's understandable for Clark not telling Lois that he is Superman. There are reasons why superheroes have alter egos and why they never reveal their true identities. If the villains they fight found out who they really are, the lives of their families and friends will put in great danger and superheroes have to be careful with who they trust. If Bruce Wayne revealed or someone exposed to the police and the press that he was Batman, the police would go after him for his acts of vigilantism and Bruce Wayne would be forced to answer for all the things he has done as Batman and all the villains he fought and had put away would go after Bruce Wayne. Bruce Wayne did what he did as Batman because he fought for justice and Clark Kent does what he does as Superman because fights to save people and fights for truth and justice and what is right.

The first Jimmy, Michael Landis was recast because they said he looked too much like Dean Cain, but there were rumors he was difficult to work with. As for why they wrote out Cat Grant, I have no idea. I don't like they never even gave her a proper send off. Clark was raised as Clark, and learned he is also Kal EL, not raised as Kal EL and grew up to pretend to be Clark. "Superman is what I can do. Clark is who I am." The "Clark comes before Superman" idea is a post-Crisis idea, but it's a welcome one for me. It humanizes the character. I like that he thinks of himself as Clark first, and Superman more as a role. It reminds me in the second episode of the Animated Series, where he accidentally ripped the wing off a falling plane. He said "Nice one, Clark" to himself. It's a great, small example of where he sees himself as Clark, first.

She let him in and there was some pretty big lies in there. Then of course it's the obvious, why she just didn't see it. Not like it was come complicated disguise. She's got to look at all the times she dismissed Clark and what that says about her. She's just confused and trying to process things. Then fast forward to when he learns in a different way.
