Supermicro Dual M.2 NVMe Adapter unboxing and Installation using WD Black 1TB SN850 NVMe M.2 and Samsung 980 PRO 1TB PCIe NVMe M.2.
We differentiate between the x4 Dual M.2 cards, to this x8 Dual M.2 NVMe which breaks down to either Non Bifurcated or Bifurcated. The Bifurcated cards have a PLX Chip. And that PLX Chip determines the Speed. This Non Bifurcated card is just an I/O Card which Requires a Motherboard Bios for Bifurcation to x4x4. With respect to Speed, dealing with 3 elements, M.2 NVMe PCIe Drive, Supermicro M.2 NVMe Dual Adapter and Motherboard Chipset. The Supermicro M.2 NVMe Dual Adapter does not determine the Speed.
We're using 2 M.2 NVMe PCIe 4.0, 2nd Generation Drives to test and verify Speed.
Test platform: Gigabyte TRX40 Designare Motherboard.

Awesome video, my 2nd of yours, you are very concise and right up my alley. I am an older user (dos 6.0 with 6.2 upgrade!) and just recently into nVME drives and these videos were very helpfull. I have an Alienware 18 with mSata boot, SLI video and raid 0 drives, no NVMe possible there. My old desktop Gigabyte GA-X79-UD3 however has 4 - pcie 3.0 x 16 slots (2x16 electrical and 2x8 electrical). Installed a Samsung 970 EVO plus in the second x16 slot (8x elec) with a single rivo board and wow, I thought ssd was fast. 3300 read and 3000 write. HWinfo confirms 4x width 3.0 pcie @ 8.0 GT/s. My question for you is I have installed two separate modded bios to include my new drive and it does boot but IMEI fails to start on either the new Win 10 install (shows PCI Simple Communications Controller error) on my nVME 970 or my old ssd dual boot (win 10 win 7, shows "Intel(R) Management Engine Interface" could not start). Its not a driver issue and I changed my battery. IMEI seems to be very important. Any idea what can be wrong? I have a SSD boot drive with an onboard intel Raid 1 with 2-2tb drives and an onboard Marvell Raid 0 with 2-1tb drives which I disabled prior to bios mod.

So, looking at the results, this adapter, with its gen3 x8 pins, intended in theory for 4GB/s times two(for two gen3 x4 NVMe drives), can actually do gen4 x4 speeds(max 8GB/s, in a gen4-slot), if used, as tested, with a single gen4 x4 NVMe SSD at a time. So it's basicly gen4 capable adapter, if I understand correctly. Just, though, for just one gen4 x4 drive at a time, as the test CrystalDiskMark-test does it, and the LED light showing the same. I think, bandwidth would possibly run out with this kind of gen3 adapter, if we would use both gen4 drives at the same time--as the intended usecase is two gen3 drives. Looking at the test results at read speeds of 7GB/s alone, which isnt possible when using an actual "speed-limiting" gen3 adapter for gen3 x4 drives. Makes sense; the math in theory states: 2 times (gen3 x8 =)8GB/s(rounded up, single gen3 lane being 985MB/s), which equals 1 time (gen4 x4 =)8GB/s(rounded up, single gen4 lane being 1,970MB/s). Very interesting results.
@BuildOrBuy
@BuildOrBuy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Administrator, Welcome! Yes, You are correct! The only limiter would be if We had a PLX Chip for PCIe 3.0. For PCIe 5.0, that would be a different story. For PCIe 4.0, We're workable as indicated. We have Subscriber Questions Questions for both JBOD and RAID. On the Dual Adapter, only JBOD. 1. SATA III is 600MBps, burst mode. Sustained throughput is about 150MBps. 2. M.2 NVMe, PCIe 3.0 is 3,500MBps. 3. M.2 NVMe, PCIe 4.0, 1st Generation is 5,000MBps. 4. M.2 NVMe, PCIe 4.0, 2nd Generation is 7,000MBps. 5. M.2 NVMe, PCIe 4.0, 3rd Generation is 7,300MBps, on the Write. And the Read is almost 7,000MBps! 6. M.2 NVMe, PCIe 5.0, 1st Generation will be 15,000MBps! We do not expect any of the current Dual or Quad Adapters to be able to handle PCIe 5.0. In RAID 0, We can do a Video on that! You are the 1st to ask! To reiterate, Everyone so far wants JBOD. Yes, interesting. Appreciate Your Comments! Thanks for Watching!

Could you perhaps some day look at a card like the SuperMicro AOC-SLG3-2H8M2 which has a RAID chipset (And probably a PLX chip on it too) and see if it could RAID-0 two NVME SSD's into a slightly older computer motherboard that -DOES NOT- have bifurification support and let us know if it would work? the pin for the ssd standoffs goes back into the standoff to push outward the latches that retain the standoffs to the pcb of the card. They kept the pin short because the function was met, and with the pin in place the standoffs cannot be removed readily without the absence of the pin in that position.

Love these videos! Your channel is awesome. I wonder if you have addressed chipset heat management, ssd , cpu , northbridge, mosfets ,etc... all dissipate lots of heat thus the need to keep em cool via thermal interface materials and heat sinks/heatpipes, I would love to see a video about the calculation/considerations when choosing TIMs and heatsinks, it’s so strange that most laptops don’t have any heat dissipation on the mostfets , and they get pretty hot and fail easily , I know the basics, but when I want to modify a high end laptop and add a heatsink on the vrm section I don’t know how to choose the right size/volume heatsink.

Hi 5 nm, Welcome! Thank You for Your Comments! I'm honored! Excellent Questions! As those relate to the Test Platform, Gigabyte TRX40 Designare, the Chipset (PCH) Fan only runs at startup! The M.2 NVMe PCIe Drives, always should have a Heatsink! We're working on a Test Video of 6 Heatsinks, 3 types, for 2280 M.2 NVMe PCIe Drives since doing this Video before We do another M.2 NVMe Dual Adapter AIC! We had to side step for Drive SMART Telemetry. That required a Video. Have to see the Heat Sensor to identify the heat! On this Platform, Drives cannot be in RAID for SMART technology telemetry. Crazy right. We've addressed the CPU Heat by using the Noctua CPU Cooler with an extra CPU Cooler Fan. Very Quiet. We've used Liquid Coolers before. That was like Building a Swiss Watch! The noisiest Fan is the mosfet Fan on the Motherboard running full blast. Controlled in Bios. Dropping the RPMs, affects noise more than heat. That needs a larger Fan or larger heatsink or both! Larger Fans more more CFMs and makes less noise! Copper would help immensely instead of Aluminum! As for Heatsinks for Laptop M.2 NVMe Drives, We're going to include one in the Mix of 6. Space is a big problem in a Laptop. Being able to breath is the best defense for heat on a Laptop. Yes there are other options but they get expensive. And those options are best left to a professional. We will keep these requests in mind for inclusion in future Videos! To reiterate, Your Questions help Us to make better Videos based on Subscriber Requests! Thanks for Watching! Stay tuned!

Are there any PCIe Bifurcation cards that split x16 to two M.2 (or 2 PCIe x4) slots AND give you a x8 lane slot for a GPU? The Nvidia 4060 only needs 8 lanes of its PCIe x16 slot. I found a PCIe x16 to x8x4x4 (dual M.2 slots and x16 riser slot with 8 lanes) ... but it needs motherboard support/control for x8x4x4.
@BuildOrBuy
@BuildOrBuy 3 ай бұрын
Hi RealKing, Welcome. There are 2 types of these cards. 1. This Supermicro card requires Motherboard Bios Bifurcation. 2. A Self Bifurcated card. These are more expensive costing as much or more than a Motherboard. The simplest solution is to utilize a Motherboard like a HEDT or Workstation that has enough PCIe Lanes to cover everything for simultaneous operation. That excludes Consumer Desktop Motherboards. To your Question, no. Bifurcation is specifically to allow M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Drives only.

Hi Noam Lavi, Interesting observation. Not at all. Again to reiterate, this setup is a progression of Answering Subscribers Questions. We started with 1 Quad card. That progressed through all Quad cards. Then this Best of class Dual M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Adapter. And along the way showing the differences in CPU PCIe Lanes and Chipset PCIe Lanes. Plus issues of Bifurcation are always present. And that took Us through Defining Bios Bifurcation and Self Bifurcation. Every Video tells a unique story. Plucking 1 Video out of sequence without the back story does not tell the complete story as You have asked. Perspective and Perception. Hope that helps! Our 2 main topics of Questions are Quad cards and Bifurcation. After this Video, that took Us to Test 16 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Drive Heatsinks. To again address Subscribers Questions. So to Your Question, M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Drives are preferred on CPU PCIe Lanes then down the line. To simplify the progression of Quick Tests, We simply the Configuration to prevent confusion for Us and Viewers. Have You ever installed a Quad card? Have You ever tried RAID on a Quad card? We have Videos on those Topics. Quad cards are just I/O cards. JBOD is the default Configuration. RAID is an option but not a requirement. More than You asked! Perception and Perspective!

Hi Kool K, Welcome! Appreciate Your Comments! What's the age of Your Motherboard? Bifurcation is about 5 years old now. Z490 Chipset does not have enough PCIe Resources even if it did partially support Bifurcation. You only have 20 PCIe Lanes from the CPU. Everything else is through the Chipset. You need a HEDT or Workstation to fully support Bifurcation from the CPU PCIe Lanes. In Your Bios under PCIe Slots would be a setting for changing from x16 to x4x4x4x4 for full Bifurcation. Your other Option would be a self Bifurcated Add in card. Those are expensive since the Bifurcation PLX Lane switching chip is built in to the card. Either Highpoint or Glotrends. Hope that helps!

This is actually interesting. Even product page show us that card is Gen 3, but in fact it... let's be 100% correct - show us "Gen 4 speed for SSD". Is it mean that card is actually Gen 4? Basicly card is simple (electrical) converter 1x PCI Express x8 to 2x M.2 x4 slots. So, no "special" electrical preparation on PCB level (extra layers or shielding)? Because i know that PCI Express riser cables actually have got stuff inside... well... cables - shielding of the signal. Maybe that shielding is important only for GPU (intense data transfer)? It can't be that Supermicro don't have PCI Express 4.0 motherboards, right? Thay are big manufacturer. P.S. But it good anyway, since this is cheap card. Even in my country it cost ~$50. Good for cheap raid experiments (SSD\Optane Raid combos).

@BuildOrBuy 3 жыл бұрын
Hi rusTORK, Thank You! Appreciate Your Comments! This is very important to understand Resources and how they are allocated on a Motherboard and how they interact. The Speed Test verification says Yes! We expect that to change with PCIe 5.0, as You have described. And those Riser Cables are apparently not made to a high enough tolerance nor standard to be practical from what We've tested. Starting this List off with a Server Component only made sense as We work Our way through to the Consumer Cards. And maybe a Card with a PLX Chip. We've already covered one Quad card with a PLX Chip. The Glotrends Sky card. Which requires a x8 Slot electrically for 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 Drives. We're going to have to do a Video on RAID Types and Levels of RAID. This is a poor man's RAID for either a Hybrid Bios RAID or an O/S RAID but not a Hardware RAID. Amazing what We can accomplish on the Desktop these days! Thanks for Watching! Stay tuned!

GEN3 aic that works with GEN4 drives near the cpu but doesn't work further from the cpu put the mfgr in a odd position. At GEN4 NVMe launch new more expensive mobos with larger traces and more layers for signal integrity cost more. Some mobos offered a beta bios update to use GEN4 drives on a GEN3 motherboard, but again length of the run made a difference. GEN4 drives on a GEN4 mobo running in a GEN3 AIC should work. I noticed Asus GEN3 AIC to GEN4 AIC had more capacitors to handle the sudden power surge when drives went from idle to in use.

Well you get big heat sinks and small fans on the AIC quad NVMe cards for four drives. They're in a socket not under your hot GPU. Should help. As for controller temp, I did try Grizzle pads $$ on the controller and cut the stock pad to cover the nand flash. I didn't know how to get temp sensor info, but they didn't throttle.

Hi@@maxhughes5687 , How much of a difference did the Thermal Grizzly pads make? Did You check both ways? We'll test 6 heatsinks of 3 types. So far, without a Heatsink We hit 84 degrees Celsius! Way too Hot! Down the rabbit hole! Stay tuned!

@@BuildOrBuy The E16 controller temp info was from GN several years ago. Grizzly was the best W/mK, but expensive, so I just put it on the controller and used regular pads on the nand. Temps no info. I didn't know how to get it. I'd just test the speed then spin um up as much as I could and run CD Mark again. But as I've said before this was with 6 GEN4 drives on a GEN3 mobo. 4 were an AIC and two were on Asus new DIMM2 cards with heat sinks. 3500/3500 isn't really pushing these drives. 5000/4400 would have been ideal. GEN4 V2, I don't have any.

Hi@@maxhughes5687, Getting the SMART technology telemetry was a bit of an ordeal on the TRX40 Designare. That was a bit of work cutting and fitting those pads. Knowing the potential speed of PCIe 5.0, can You imagine the heat those are going to generate. Vendors will have to use Copper. No Aluminum! I'd like to try a Silver heatsink just for grins. We'll see!

AOC-SLG3-2M2 is pcie 3.0 980 pro is 4.0 how are you getting these 4.0 rates?
@BuildOrBuy
@BuildOrBuy Жыл бұрын
Hi Srini Attaluri, Welcome! Excellent Question! To reiterate, 1. Motherboard Chipset 2. M.2 NVMe PCIe Drive Spec The AIC or Add in card whether PCIe 3.0 or 4.0 does not affect Speed. PCIe 5.0 is a different animal to deal with! If this were a Self Bifurcated card then the Bifurcation PLX Chipset would be the Controlling factor in limiting the Speed to whatever Spec said Chipset meets. All Self Bifurcated cards are PCIe 3.0 at this time. Hope that clarification helps! Thanks for Asking!

Hi@@boostnet_it_solutions, We have not seen any documentation on this add-in card for remote management nor have we had any experience based on the technology at the time when this card was introduced. This card requires a Motherboard that supports Bios Bifurcation. That's the best we can offer. Based on PCIe Resources for a Workstation, a Quad card might make more sense.

Hi@@boostnet_it_solutions, Although Bios Bifurcation has been around since the Intel X299 Chipset and BMC has been around, utilizing those 2 technologies together is very new. There is only one Dual Adapter by Supermicro that can do what You want that we know of at this time. Even though a Quad card is a more efficient use of PCIe Resources, none of them are validated for BMC, that we know of at this time. A Honey Badger card falls in that category but no documentation available. Therefore, here's the product You want. Link below: Supermicro AOC-SLG4-2H8M2 store.supermicro.com/aoc-slg4-2h8m2-o.html Currently out of stock. Querry Supermicro for stock status. New product. Hi mahesh waghmare, Welcome! Must be setup and configured from UEFI mode. And NOT Bios mode (legacy). Enable Bifurcation 1. PCIe Slot CPU Lanes x4x4x4x4 BIOS Setup -> Advanced -> Chipset Configuration -> North Bridge -> IIO Configuration -> CPU Configuration -> IOU Setting -> x4x4x4x4. 2. NVMe Firmware Source set to AMI Native Support. This option may be found under BIOS Setup -> Advanced -> PCIe/PCI/PnP Configuration -> NVMe Firmware Source -> AMI Native Support. UEFI mode. 3. Disable CSM. 4. Disable Secure Boot. Activate NVMe option in GRUB 5. nvme_load=YES 6. nvd_load=YES 7. remove "quiet splash ---" NVME drive should now available in Installer. Voila! Hope that helps! Appreciate Your Support!

Good day, sir! I want to purchase this adapter for high height M.2 connectors in order to install one double sided PCB NVMe SSD with a third party heatsink. Most of M.2 to PCIe adapters only have low height m.2 connectors. Would you kindly tell whether the top or bottom M.2 is prioritised for a single drive load. I want to to install this in PCIe 4.0 x4 slot through chipset lanes on my motherboard.

Hi MagicCaster, This card requires a X8 Slot and a Motherboard that has Bios Bifurcation capability. For your Motherboard with a X4 Slot, you'll need a Self Bifurcated card. Amfeltec out of Canada can do what you want. But at a steep price.
@magiccaster-hn7rg

@@BuildOrBuyI appreciate for your response, sir! Do you mean that this adapter won't likely work for a single drive on a X4 chipset slot? Both primary PCIe 5.0 x16 and x8 slots support bifurcation, but the x16 one is used by a 4 slot GPU and\, hence, the x8 slot is inaccessible.

Hi@@magiccaster-hn7rg, This will do what you want. Focus on the technology. To reiterate, to make full use of this card requires X8. To use this card with 1 Drive, X4. And if you want to utilize 2 Drives on X4 Lanes, Amfeltec from Canada. That's a difference in this card requiring a Motherboard Bios Bifurcation to a Self Bifurcated card.

Hi William B Jones, Welcome! Unfortunately no. The Mac does not support Bifurcation and that's a Requirement. Bifurcation is the Ability to Fork or Split CPU PCIe Lanes specifically in the Motherboard Bios. Your best Option is a Self Bifurcated Add in card such as Highpoint which are 4 or 8 Drive cards. 1. Highpoint 4-Port M.2 SSD7505 PCIe Gen3/Gen4 NVMe Bootable RAID Controller - Windows, Mac and Linux amzn.to/3k1frul 2.
