I bought my 01 xr650r new. It’s now a SM with Hot cam, Baha lighting, FMF pipe. It’s got blinkers, horn and a license plate. SM tires, nobbies even a rear paddle for the dunes. This bike is, Go to Jail, fun. I’m 66 years old, still riding.

in italy we have a brand called TM racing that produces supermotards that are a great alternative to ktm because they build good quality handmade italian supermotards designed for that specifical type of riding at the same price or even less of a ktm and they are even street legal (according to Italian law)

I've been a sport bike guy for the last 6 or 7 years of riding. But im leaning more towards sumo. They just seem a lot more fun lol I enjoy twisties more than straight line speed, personally. And these seem so fun to rip around corners and wheelies and shit 😂😂 simple maintenance too

I recently got my personal unicorn dual sport, a plated '18 KTM 300-XCW, and I've been loving it as a dirt bike but it's so fun around town on the road that I'm burning through dirt tires (I just can't help myself) Now I feel like I HAVE to try the sumo thing.

I’ve had a drz400sm and now have a KTM 500 excf. Both are excellent bikes and I would gladly own and ride a drz400sm again. The KTM is just a different breed. It’s the most aggressive and amazing bike that I’ve ridden. I’ve been riding for many years and own many types of bikes and a supermoto will always be my freedom on two wheels. Their just the most fun.

Warp9 Elite 17" wheels, Tekmo titanium header, Wings titanium exhaust can, KTM racing bar, adjustable levers, Rottweiler dongle and 02 delete, K&M filter, SC seat, Savage steering damper, Avon Trail rider tires, Perun Moto tail bracket, and integrated license bracket. Just turned 62 and on my third year with my 08 Yamaha WR450F SM conversion. I love it put about 2000 miles a year on it (have two other bikes). Besides the engine mods. I have also done suspension mods. with heaver springs (for my weight) stiffer. Added some extra lights so I can ride it to work at 5 am. Very fun! Still trying to ride wheelies like I did when I was 16 on my dirt bikes.

I watched this video when it came out and loved it. I just watched it again today while standing in front of my 2021 drz400sm in the garage and you made me so much more excited for the spring to come and the dreaded snow to melt. I started riding on an mt07 which is known for being a fun, torquey, easily flickable feeling 700 like a big street dirtbike in a naked bike body and it is Loads of fun. But I live near trails and grew up riding dirtbikes. I then got my drz400sm there is just something about it. I can have more fun in more places without breaking as many laws. If it isn't just speed you are looking for a supermoto is by far more smiles per mile. Easy to say I sold my mt07 after a month of buying my new drz. And I can only imagine the adrenaline from an exc500f or a 690 but the drz400sm is as reliable as it gets for a supermoto and as someone that works on their cars, machines it is something to appreciate. Being able to beat the living piss out of my bike and use its full potential on any road or trail and needing the most basic of maintenance on stretched intervals is a quite beautiful thing. This video was great thanks for pumping me up for the 2023 season. much love to the supermoto fam all over! Most people think they are pointless or not "real bikes" until they ride one. From a cold canuck in ontario, Canada. Cheers.

Owned 2 KTM 625SMC's a DRZ400SM and '06 WR450F. The WR was my favourite, because of the FCR carb and paired with an FMF PC3 it was shooting flames in the streets! The KTM's came with the best equipment and made great power, those models were rare too, the only problem was electrical faults with them. Of all of them the DRZ engine definitely my fave sound and the front end handling was superb.

But the most fun I EVER had on a bike was when I put the supermoto wheel kit and changed the gearing/sprockets on my crf450r.. I've had a 00 XR650r supermoto for 6 years now. It's a blast. I swap the stock wheels back on for trail riding. You are right about sport bike riders not knowing what to think when they get passed by a big red pig coming out of a corner with my fat arse on it. 🤣 Hell just yesterday chased down my buddy on his sv650 then his friend on his mt09 on these back roads out in Mexico. When we stopped the guy on the MT09 was like "wth is that thing. It's a rocketship." I love that reaction almost as much as the look of disappointment when I pull up on a "dual sport" to a sportbike ride.

I made my own 18 inch front wheel for around 150 bucks and have been putting on big miles for twelve years. I don't race but I rode it to Canada a few years ago (1000 miles) I commute with it year round. it will handle curvy roads so well it is fantastic--it handles dirt roads great as well. I have spent maybe 1200 bucks total.

But all of our riding spots started to dry up. (old parking lots). We just ride a lot of HS and Enduros now. Occasionally hit the track on our SV. Just sold my 06 KTM 625 SMC to a co-worker and he is nothing but smiles for it. It took him two years to convince me to get rid of it. I also owned a 2015 Hypermotard SP which I used as a down payment on an F150 a few years ago. The Ducati was a fun bike for the back roads of the Oregon Coast, but as a former motocrosser of 22 years the KTM was more fun with less power.

I owned a brand new 2006 KTM 660 SMC back in the day with a view to racing in the 660 cup only to be told only the older single pipe models were eligible. I went on some Supermoto trackdays and the CRF450 was the bike to have at the time, the 660 was a bit heavy. I bought a 2 or 3 year old CRF450 crosser in 2008 and converted it before moving abroad instead of racing it. When I got back a couple of years later the CRF450 was no longer competitive so I traded it in for a 2007 KTM 560 which had a built engine. I raced in the open class in 2011 but it was already struggling against the newer KTM 450's and in 2012 I wasn't competitive at all and was one of only a handful of larger capacity bikes out there. I couldn't afford to run new slicks let alone keep upgrading bikes so I sold it and called it a day. The KTM 660 was my favorite, awesome for wheelies, not that bad on fuel and I've only ever seen 2 of my model in real life, my best mate liked mine so much he bought a new one too. Servicing was a nightmare on it as you had to bleed the air from the frame which held the oil and it needed to be done every 1000 - 1500 miles. I later got a kawaski versys 650, fitted some renthals, made a few minor changes to the suspension and with a long service interval kind of got the best of all worlds. I took that on a tarmac supermoto only day and was beating a lot of supermoto's with it. I also took the versys offroad a bit in Spain and it had capability in the dry.

Up here in Canada trying to get a SuMo is tough because you can't convert a dirt bike due to our laws. It has to be a dual sport, or it's illegal and doesn't count as a road bike. Another reason why dual sport bikes are so expensive and hold their value so well second hand here these days.

I personally got my A1 license and bought a KTM 125 EXC 2006 as a first bike, and that is sumo converted and have a smr 450 front suspension on a 660 SMC trippleclamp and a complete fs450 (2023) front brake setup. A quickshifter ;) And tons more. I dont think there is any better place than scandinavia to get a understanding of the custom/converted supermoto scene!

I lived in SF. I put street tires on my BRP. It had plenty power but the best thing was the view. You can't see crap on a gsxr. You can see something bad coming a lot quicker on a dirt bike and nothing could beat you in town.

Bro have you ever seen tm motards? They are made in Italy! They make 2 strokes and 4 strokes, from 85 cc up to 500 cc if I don't get it wrong. In Italy it is a really famous manufacturer, especially whit the 2 stroke 125 cc motards, made with carburetors or with fuel injection, bought primarily from 16 yo with 15 hp, modified up to 30 hp per wheel and having only 100 kg of weight

Great vid! I agree with your points. Currently just about done building a FE501 SM. For anybody on the fence of building vs buying, just buy a DRZ400SM or 690/701SM. The headaches of converting aren't worth it. I'm going to be $8K-$10K into my conversion (not including price of bike) when all is said and done. Granted I'm going all out but there's too many little annoying issues that pop up with a conversion along with waiting months for wheels to be built and obtaining proper brakes. I could have been riding a 701SM for the last 4 months instead sweating and cussing in my garage.

@@torytaylor693 You're right. I'll be stoked when it is finally done. I must admit a lot of the issues are self inflicted. I didn't have to go with tubeless Warp 9's that won't hold air. I didn't have to go with the Xtrig triples that came with the wrong bar mounts and I didn't have to go with the widest rim that causes chain rub. Once the wheel is fixed it'll be ready to rip. Just a frustrating process.

Nice vid thanks. I saw one mistake that I'd like to bring to your attention. The first image you show when talking about the XR 650L at 16:29 is actually the XR 650R. The 650R is a bike designed for desert racing, the Baja in particular, and it was particularly successful. Also a good platform for SM with engines lasting around 60-80k miles before needing a rebuild in cases.

What I wish I would’ve done is bought the 701E instead of the 701SM though because you can’t wheel swap the 701SM due to the brake and fork setup So the 701E would’ve been a better buy for doing both street and dirt

Nice video! Wanted to add a few points here to anyone looking. Technical bits. When you were talking about the 690 smc and 701 early on you were showing a lot of 450smr track footage. And later when you were talking about the smr450 you were showing husky 701. Very different beasts. At the end you snuck an xr650r pic in there. Those were great bikes designed for baja. Aluminum frame. Liquid cooled etc. Not street legal from honda but loads of them around have been converted. From a technical point i wanted add a few things. Dirt bikes converted to sm generally handle better than an sm converted to dirt. The rake and trail numbers get messed up which is why sm race bikes have lower offset triple clamps and often shorter swing arms. 2k to convert is generally the low end. A drz for example has a cable driven speedo and you need to factor in a few extra parts like a digital speedo. My ktm 450 race bike was 5k to convert without a slipper clutch or triple clamps. You could buy used parts and get away for $1000 if you can find a deal. I opted to spend a bit more on brakes and tubeless rims. From a platform perspective ktm used to make pretty unique smr bikes up until the 2011 chassis change. From then the smr and sxf bikes were really close. Smr had different offset clamps. A slipper clutch and slightly different trans ratios. The older sm bikes from ktm had more unique parts like frames. At the end of the day get what you can get :) The older husky 450/550 bikes had some transmission issues. Ive heard swm has refined them over the years. If someone is getting a bike to ride street and track check with the track to see the rules. A 690/701 generally isnt allowed on kart tracks while a ktm500 would be. Drz is a great entry point. 02 to current S model makes a great entry bike. Not the fastest but handles well on track and is fast enough to have fun. I dont suggest dumping a ton of money into any bike without riding a bit. My first sm was a drz i converted and snowballed quick. Then i went to an rmz450 and moved to ktms. I personally prefer the ktm feel on the track and had trouble with front end feel and liked the steel frame. Lastly i would Highly suggest supermoto to anyone. Its a blast on street and even more fun on track. Highway is really the biggest downside.

@@BornAGoon all good! I just wanted to point it out for those watching so not to confuse. I saw a converted crf450rl on the road yesterday. I am glad honda finally made that bike. I owned a drz from 03 to 2013 and always hoped for an rmz450l. Currently i have an sxf450 i managed to get plated. Just walked into the dmv and out with a plate. At the time i had 2 of them. They turned one down but approved the other. The key was the original title from ktm that cant be reprinted. Those get lost but i bet a newer xcf it probably easier with that. Side note. For awhile beta dealers were able to tag their offroad bikes. I have a friend with a 300 two stroke he got titled when he bought it new.
