JJared Padalecki (Supernatural, Gilmore Girls) joins me this week to reflect on his SP Family and rollercoaster that these last 15 years have been.
Jared shares the emotions he’s had during some of the “last” moments while shooting the final episodes and talks about not wanting the ride to end, for good.
We also talk about self fulfilling prophecies with anxiety and depression, Jared’s newfound respect for his wife after fathering during quarantine, and what exactly led to his arrest a few months back. Love this dude, completely open book.

There are few celebrities I have more respect for than Jared Padalecki. His openness with regards to mental illness is important, and he's one of the few people with such a platform that actually uses it to put that important issue to the forefront. The fact that he had a slip-up is, to me, more a positive than a negative, at least in terms of the people that look up to him. "He's this millionaire actor, but hey, he had an issue like I had an issue." His work to get rid of the stigma that plagues mental illness is inspiring, and commands commendation. Great episode.

I remember reading a magazine interview with Jared online; about his mental health issues rearing it's ugly head during filming of the 3rd season of Supernatural, and he had said something along the lines of "I had dogs, friends and family members who I knew loved me, but I was depressed anyway". That quote helped me realize that it was okay to admit to being depressed, and that I needed help for my own depression and anxiety. I was the kind of person who would viciously beat myself up at the first sign of depression, telling myself that I was being a conceited asshole for feeling sad "for no reason", telling myself that I had no right to be upset when other people out there had it worse, that I was being overly dramatic, etc. I had found Supernatural in 2014 or 2015 ( I forget exactly) only a little while after my own health issues took a dive in 2013. So having someone out there KNOW what it felt like, and to be open an honest about mental health, really helped me come to terms with my own.

I totally get that. I've had anxiety attacks for no reason sometimes too. I eventually learned to have them and work through them.
@Panda72021
@Panda72021 3 жыл бұрын
@@coffeegirl18 Exactly, it's the ones that come out of nowhere that annoy me the most. Because if I'm anxious for a specific reason, I kinda have a chance to use logic to settle myself down, but if I'm just chilling and my heartbeat decides to randomly go into overdrive, then I'm just panicked AND confused.
@Cervateus
@Cervateus 3 жыл бұрын
It's so sad that people feel that way. If you break your arm, most people wouldn't be thinking "I/You should be glad that I/you still have your arm, there are people out there with only one arm!" Just because someone might, from a objective standpoint, have it worse, doesn't change the fact that your arm is broken, and that it hurts. By that logic, pretty much no one should be allowed feel bad (physically or mentally), because there's always someone else that has got it worse. But for some reason, we as humans seem to think that emotional well being is completely different than physical. All it does is invalidate peoples feelings, and then people start feeling even worse because they're feeling bad and it's a downwards spiral. It's stupid that seeing a doctor for your body is completely normal and fine, but seeing one for your mental health is frowned upon. Seen as weak. Society truly does suck sometimes... Depression is one of the biggest killers in the affluent Europe and America, yet we keep treating it like something to be ashamed of. So I agree, it's nice seeing people who actually can reach and affect a lot of people be open about mental health. I wish more people would follow that example.

when it comes to being there for your dog's last moments: I have worked at both an animal shelter and a vet clinic, and I have seen up close what happens when owners aren't there for that, I have seen dog's that came in pretty much already gone fighting the sedatives and stuff and completely panic because they kept looking for their owner that wasn't there, and that is the worst thing ever! and besides, that dog has been by your side and your best friend for years and has supported you through everything, so I'd say it's only fair to return the favor for those last moments... so yeah, it will be hard and there will be tears and all of that, but on behalf of all dogs, spare them the "my person isn't here for the scariest day of my life" panic and be there, just be there, they'd do the same for you

I'm thankful for Jared's advice and that he's so open with his mental health, because sometimes it's easy to get lost in the hopelessness of Depression and Suicide, and just feeling like nothing will get better, you just get trapped on all the negative thoughts, memories, things you've fucked up and it's just hard, I've been depressed the majority of my life kind of just something I've had to live with and like him and Michael said it's kind of just there in the car with you, and you can't kick it out but you can still tell it to fuck off, but it's not always easy, I've made a few attempts in my 23 years of life, been hospitalized, and my Therapist never really helped, but to be honest probably should've tried someone else, her advice was usually to pray or read the Book of Mormon even though I'd told her more than once I'm Atheist, so more than anything I'd go to the sessions and just be annoyed. Anyway Anxiety is probably what I've made the most progress on, used to be so bad I could hardly say hello to a stranger, I was too scared to order food at a restaurant. But now it's not nearly as severe, I still get Anxiety from having to drive somewhere, or talking on the phone, it's mostly small things now, but I still can't help but overly worry about the most trivial things. Anyway my point is, it's easy to get lost in all the bad, but I think Jared offered great advice, to maybe try and help yourself get away from that. Really need to thank him and everyone else who worked on Supernatural, because it's helped me get through a lot.

There are 2 sides to a story for a reason. People were just too quick on dragging him cause they saw him stumble. He wasn't to be blamed fully for what went down to begin with, cause it was so out of character for him + the cameras just happened to be right there, sus from the start. Nevertheless, I'm truly proud of Jared and how he handled himself and turned that to better himself.

I remember my first gut reaction when I heard about Jared's arrest was "Oh, please say people aren't going to hold this over him." People make mistakes - some are bigger than others - but I grew up in a college town and I know how easy and common it is for an individual to lose control. And to be frank, having a history of chronic depression among other things makes the blow that much harder (I think my grammar sucked there, but nothing highlighted). Anyway, I can only thank God that Jared has a community of support - not enablement, not cover-up, but genuine support. Michael, you've always been a part of that community from the WB/CW Branch and your session here with Jared is just another part of that community of support. I'm now a subscriber!

And I also saw how uncomfortable he was talking about his arrest but he kept going. Very brave to stop drinking. His love to his dogs is one of the many reasons I love him so much. I'm really rooting for his success and I liked that it will be an all new Texas Ranger. But what really surprised me was that he's the classic car man. The others always pointed him like the one most likely to hit the impala. But well done. They both deserved. All the success J2!

I came because I saw Jared was on but man, hearing Michael talking at the start, I’m hooked in and will be back for every episode now. Your family are in my thoughts, it’s such a hard process when you have a terminally ill family member, especially when it’s 15 years. Sending so much love your way and thank you for sharing this and making me cry. You are a special and wonderful human Michael Rosenbaum ❤️

What a wonderful podcast, thank you so much Michael. It was like listening to two friends chat, share advice, and comfort. There was real connection and emotion there. The fact that you two love your dogs so very much, tells me a lot about the both of you, and your giant hearts. Your dogs are blessed to have you. I respect Jared's openness about his arrest, and using it as a teachable moment to learn and grow. No excuses. What I will take away from this podcast and remember for life is "no feeling is final" Thank you ❤️

This was my first watch of this podcast, came on to see Jared. Really enjoyed Michael‘s approach and openness so I will be watch more. In regards to Jared, I’m lucky to have met him on a couple of occasions because my cousin worked for him on Supernatural. Such a great, personable guy and that really comes across in this interview. What really struck me personally was his sharing of his dog Sadie‘s death. My dog is 15 too, and has the same issues Sadie did. Jared describing to Michael how someone knows when it is time to let go was something I needed to know at just this time. On another note, Supernatural was such a big part of Vancouver’s film industry, will truly be missed.

I teared up a lot about the sick/dead pets. I had my first dog on my own die this past Christmas (she was 11) and I had two of my giant rabbits killed by a fox/coyote - I wish they just went missing vs my Dad finding them like that. My new rescue dog basically got me through everything and he's an amazing pup...He was abused by his first owner and the second owner didn't have the space for him. I had mom take him to the vet while I was under quarantine for a checkup and she asked if he was going to be a therapy dog. When I got him he would shake and shrink into himself. I kept training him though and he really enjoyed reward based training/doing zoomies in my large backyard. I totally get the reference of the food as reward and the psychiatry vs psychologist. I went to a psychiatrist when I was 21 and she was fantastic, she just wanted me to talk through things then basically said "There's nothing that wrong with you but you definitely have Generalized Anxiety Disorder." I had panic attacks as a teen and I kept feeling like I was going to die. I was later diagnosed with lyme disease which can cause heightened mental illness issues and am basically cured/in remission now. I honestly thought he was either drugged or possibly had a bipolar episode. My grandpa was bipolar and would be an entirely different person when he drank. I'm happy Jared's okay now.
