He's known the word fanfiction for a while (I think all of the cast is aware of fanfiction), but he just recently learned the word "canon" when he was doing a podcast for The Nerdist. When Destiel was brought up, he asked what the word 'canon' meant and thus learned how to correctly use it.

I love how he calls Castiel just Cas, it gives like a more intimate relation he has with his character, and glad to know that he actually enjoys working in Supernatural not just because they pay him ^_^
