Learn to ride up and over obstacles in the trail - never step off your bike again to carry it over a rock or log. As mountain bikers, most trails have some sort of obstruction on the trail, and this video will teach you everything you need to know about riding up and over them safely and in control.
Using the unweighting technique, we can learn how to lift our front and back wheels off the ground. This is an easy skill to practice on flat ground, and then you can adapt it to larger and larger obstacles as you gain confidence. I learned this skill the exact same way, using curbs and a stack of pallets to slowly build up the skill.

Going back over this something I missed before is the importance of dropping your heels as you move back. That might sound obvious to long time flat pedal users but not to me. I've only started just started using them for training after 30 years of cleated pedals. For me it was instinctive to keep my feet level at all times and I was struggling to move my hips back far enough to un-weight the BB. I'm sure one of your other videos mentioned it and now I can finally lift my front wheel like everyone else!

Awesome! Your footwork on flat pedals will make a huge difference, for sure. Not only the forward and back, but the side to side can be helpful for balance.

I like your way better than the old days when we’d clear the tree with front wheel putting the cogs (chain ring) on the tree then just pedal through. Puts the bike right over.

It is the same mechanics as a punch to get up steep rocks or to clear a boulder. Log hops are more difficult bc you have to stick the landing immediately on the other side and push the bike through. On 2" logs or above I do more of a front wheel on top and replace w rear wheel tech. That does take front wheel braking when the front wheel lands to gather the hips thrust to lift the rear wheel up. That pause allows me to control my speed so I can land the front wheel under control. It is tricky and few riders execute those techs anymore. I started ridding many years ago before mtb trails were in most states. You had to learn to clear logs on hiking trails or you'd be walking A Lot. Great vid. Most logs are bump and rollers like you showed.

Spot on! There's a move in trials called the "lunge" or "wheel switch" (depending what side of the Atlantic you live on) that is super similar to what you're describing, too. One of my favorite moves to do on any bike! There's a version where you do that wheelbase hop forward and land without brakes, and it feels really cool when you get it right.

You know when your front wheel hits the log, it momentarily stops the bike, do you use that momentum to help you powerfully shift your hips forward?
@SuperRiderTV

Yeah, absolutely: that's exactly the point that I shift my body position. Great call out!

@@Sunspot-19 Laying off the brakes does remove a crutch and expose some things. I've never tried true brakeless, might be fun to try for a few days next bike build.
@Sunspot-19
@Sunspot-19 7 ай бұрын
True brakeless, I haven't done intentionally however, I am very conservative in using my brakes for many situations. Much can be done without using them. The more unified a rider is with their bike, the more they can stay off the brakes. All in good fun, nonetheless.

@SuperRider - what gear ratios do you use when doing all these great drills and tricks?
@SuperRiderTV
@SuperRiderTV 4 ай бұрын
I'm usually in my fourth gear (typically the same gear you usually ride wheelies in) - just the right mix between "easy enough" and "enough power to move the bike".
