I'm from the UK and some things I would add to this mix include.... Sulphate of Potash - This is a fantastic powder amendment that will radically help fast flowering plants. I like Sulphate of Potash specifically because it has a similar effect to Bat Guano and is aimed mainly at flowering. If you haven't noticed many of the products above are high nitrogen, which is good, however Sulphate of Potash adds another element for flowering. Chicken Pellets - In my opinion this is probably the best amendment you can use outdoors. People don't realize that whilst very good for your outdoor garden things such as bone meal, blood meal, kelp and various other powder or granule products only release nutrients for about 5 WEEKS. That is okay because in an outdoor garden you have dug the soil, you have removed any unwanted plants and weeds, so essentially the nutrients leech into the soil and there is nothing there to use them until you plant that area with plants. Studies have shown that many of the powder / granule type feeds have basically exhausted 90% of their nutrients within 4 to 5 weeks. Chicken Pellets however claim to last up to 5 MONTHS! Chicken Pellets are cheap, easy to carry, easy to use and big through the soil and they last a long time which really helps. Slow Release Granules - Some people dislike the slow release granules that you can buy, claiming they can not be used on food crops / edible foods, where actually it says on the box they are designed to be perfectly safe with food crops such as vegetables. Some years ago there was several slow release granules on the market that said "Do not use on food crops" and they wasn't suitable for use on vegetables, ect. However, some years ago that changed and now virtually all of the slow release granules say they can now be used on edible crops. The benefit here is that manufacturers claim they release nutrients for 6 MONTHS, which is ideal for some plants. Perlite / Vermiculite - Its worth mentioning that no super soil mix is really complete without either Perlite or Vermiculite, in fact many growers add perlite religiously and it does help a lot. Generally I say if you live in a really hot country and have issues with lack of water then add Vermiculite to each planting hole and that will help retain water, where if you live in a colder or wetter climate where it rains more then add Perlite and this will help the patch drain. I will point out that the patch draining better helps combat rots and molds in wetter climates. Lime - Well obviously garden lime is a good thing to add outdoors that will help correct the soils PH to a neutral 7 which can be useful for some plants. However people sometimes get confused by lime because actually it doesn't need adding every year, or in other words if your using the same patch each year then you don't need to lime it every year, about once every 3 years would be best. If you lime each year you then you run the risk of making your soil toxic or burning plants. Animal Warning - Its also worth noting that a lot of the products above such as bone meal / blood meal and even chicken pellets and bat guano can all attract animals. Generally if you use enough of the products above then that patch will be visited by all sorts of animals over the next 2 weeks, as the animals can smell it from miles away and think its food. This means for about 2 weeks the patch will be visited by things such as rats / rabbits / squirrels / foxes / deer / badgers / birds and if your unlucky wolves, bears, lions, tigers. Remember a bear can smell blood from up to 20 miles away! You are adding BONE & BLOOD MEAL to the ground, so yes foxes, wolves, bears will smell that. In this case if your patch is outdoors, in nature, in the wild then add the nutrients and wait 2 WEEKS before planting, hopefully with 3 or 4 rainy days within that 2 week period. The main risk with animals is they will eat / trample / destroy your plants and garden area. The most effective way around this is by waiting 2 or 3 weeks for the smell of blood and bone to die down and to put wire or plastic cages around the plants which helps stop smaller animals at least, dam rabbits! I'm not sure what country you live in but remember virtually all of the predator animals, even tigers, lions, large cats, bears can all smell blood and bone products from miles away! If you live in a country with dangerous animals and are planting outdoors in the wild then I'd suggest getting your food in the ground and then giving it 2 or 3 weeks along with 2 or 3 good rainy days so the smell vanishes a little. Its worth nothing that smell it released when it rains or when the patch is dug over again before planting. I have noticed "Bursts" of smell just after its rained, so animals often turn up after its rained and the blood and bone have got wet. Budget - If you are on a budget and don't have much funds then I highly suggest Chicken Pellets, because they not only have the full NPK range but they are easy to carry, easy to use, cheap, long lasting and effective. However, to use them properly they need to be evenly dug into the patch and the first 1ft of soil. Generally in a 2x2ft planting bed that is 1ft deep I will use 2 or 3 large handfuls of chicken pellets and thoroughly dig them into the soil, don't leave them all in a clump! Ideally you need some good rainy days and the chicken pellets will get wet and begin to break apart, then you return to patch and dig over / turn the soil and this helps break up the pellets even more which then allows you to put younger plants there without risk of burn. Basically chicken pellets will take you all the way to flowering and beyond. In reality you could do a grow with just chicken pellets and then add a bit more stuff as flowering starts. In this case, if I was on a serious budget I'd use chicken pellets dug into the ground and then later when flowering began I would use sulphate of potash as a top dressing, dug in and sprinkled in the first 1 inch of soil around the plants. I will point out when I first started I hated the idea and even the sound of chicken pellets, they sounded cheap and didn't sound as good as other things, but now I swear by them and would use them in any outdoor grow. Yes if you can then add everything on the film / list above as adding things like blood meal, bone meal, kelp will basically load up your soil with loads of micronutrients, minerals and growth promoters, however in most cases they only have an effective release time of about 5 weeks. Generally my aim would be to add a mixture of fast release foods and slow release as well. In this case the film above is good, but I'd add slow release pellets (the ones that are safe for food use) and chicken pellets as well. Good luck!

oh.. so this supersoil is mainly for outdoor growing?? Because as he said it needs the season (months and months) along with huge containers for the amendments to break down and become plant available? So my question is, would these supersoil amendments be completely useless for indoor grows which are on a 3 month cycle? As probably the amendments dont have enough time to break down and be plant available?

Honestly, is having all these products a necessity for super soil? Yes, all the nutrients is there. However, how much in quantity will the plants really need? Do they need that much in calcium? Do they need that much in trace minerals or that much of all these things? Like, how much of certain nutrients do plants really need that aren't the n-p-k? I think there is a much simpler soil mix that can be used: A medium as a filler (I prefer coco coir), compost (can be different kinds like composted manure, mushroom compost, homemade compost, grass compost, etc), worm castings, vermiculite/perlite, and then finally worm castings and some kind of organic fertilizer to break down in the soil. How would you rate this type of mix? My current soil is a mix of 1:1 coco coir and vermiculite and then I add worm castings and a fertilizer depending on what will the soil be used for. That said, this is for pots.

Not to step on subcools toes. He knows his shit.. but ive learned over yrs of growing. this mix is great for plants you plan on keeping over 3mo.s. personally i like it, as top dressing. These nutrients break down at different rates,, so dialing in the rate of nutrients you want..at any one time , also (plant specific) is a whole different prob. . Supersoil is good. its just too hot for seedlings, for vegging its great. personally its too expensive for me to use. when from cutting to finish takes me roughly 100. days. (checking the salinity of your run off )at 75-90 days was ideal for my plants. only problem was, now i gotta start flushing. and before i run out of time. Hope that helps someone..

Is letting compost go through four full seasons in sealed tub or one full year going to impact the potency of the nutrients in any negative way? I know you gotta let it cook for a month in the heat but i made an assload and have over 60 gallons that have baked a full summer, now are enduring the freezing winter and will thaw again in the summer. How does that impact the microbes?

I would prefer 0 blood meal with a substitute. Biochar maybe?

You say to either create the super soil 30 days in advance so things have time to break down, or to amend only the bottom half so that it breaks down by the time the roots grow into it. What is the problem with amending the entire pot and planting immediately? Wont the breakdown process occur with time, eventually freeing up the nutrients for the plant?

Coots soil blend is far more superior for everyone out there and easy to make your own and use plenty of wuality worm castings and malted barley lots of that stuff and all u need really is to just water if you really want to get a bomb huge grow inside with ease and little care use a coot style soil in an earthbox if u do t want to make ur own soil buy a bag of 3.0 from build a soil premade best stuff u can buy

I know this is a old video but I have a question. I am planting in ground and I live in michigan so my prep time is minimal. Would anyone recommend tilling these ingredients plus compost and aeration into the soil a week or two before planting? I'm a first time grower so any advice would be appreciated. Peace!

Way to much info to digest for a beginner just give me the best dirt to use and maybe an additive or two. Very good for someone whose been doing this for a lifetime but too much for me. I'll just buy a bag of weed . In my day you ha d Mex which was crap, Columbian which was what most folk got, Gold either Columbian or Acapulco which was primo or Panama Red the heavenly weed that was rare but undoubtably the Lords gift to us connoisseurs of the heavenly hemp. That was so long ago and probably before you all were born. Today's weed is all genetically manufactured and the high is way too potent for most. I like the mellow high that was not so friggin powerful as it is today. We used to look to legalize it but there was no way the establishment would ever allow that. The best we got was lowering the drinking age to 18 because it was a little ridiculous to send us to Vietnam and unable to drink a beer. Shortly thereafter they upped it back to 21 when the war backed down. I don't know about driving with a bunch of people high on this shit. Coming back from Southeast Asia the call was for good heroin and that's something Uncle Sam didn't foresee but plenty of enterprising assholes did and destroyed many lives which led to Pablo and the Ochoa's and Carlos Lehder who's dream was to fuck the USA with the bomb of Coke and when they found a little baking soda and heat in a cigar glass tube would increase profits astronomically he was right.
