Supersonic Ping Pong Balls Launcher?! Purdue University Physics Experiment

Under Purdue College of Technology professor Mark French, students build a supersonic ping pong ball launcher for a university physics experiment. French tasked his doctoral students to realize his vision for the world's first supersonic ping pong gun. Their air-powered Bazooka launches the inefficient ammunition at Mach 1.23, faster than an F-16 fighter jet. Despite their lack of mass, the featherweight balls pack a lot of energy.

@@0neDoomedSpaceMarine my air rifle has a higher muzzle velocity than my .22 - but even though the projectile comes out faster, the lighter air rifle has nowhere near the range, or impact. Wind resistance washes off its speed MUCH quicker. The projectile would also need to be a reasonably good fit in the barrel or the air will blow right past it - inertia. More weight means its harder to get it off the starting line...

yes it would if the pressure is high enough. but not on a ping pong ball. the blast will smash it before it exit the barrel. a airsoft bb could do the same damage but with a different setup ant a lot more pressure.

In the longer video, he explains how the tape is popped, by the air, which encases the ball, as soon as the air is released. This encasement also prevents the ball from losing speed, by hitting the tube or barrel wall. In short, obviously the pressurized air, is responsible for much of the impact. What I'm wondering, is why the ball doesn't pop, once they draw the vacuum? It's made of brittle material. This leads me to think, that the ball must have a hole in it, and is filled with pressurized air, as the air encases the ball. So, it has a wall of air around and behind it, and may be filled with pressurized air, as well. Who knows lol.

I know this is a few years too late. but the ultimate limitation on punkins is how fast you can accelerate them without making pie. That is why you see longer and longer barrels and centripetal machines that can almost match the cannons.

The point of a vacuum is to negate air resistance. A .50 caliber shot already has a lot of momentum so air resistance isn't that much of a problem. That being said, adding a vacuum wouldn't really do anything.
