I remember at 2 yrs old in 1988 seeing a movie based on her life. I think it always stayed with me. Plus I'm a Singer/performer and became kind of obsessed with how I looked and it caused me slot of anxiety and nervousness. It more a female trait but I relate to her in that way. It's sad she didn't see herself as we saw her. This beautiful girl with a voice of gold. Wish she had accepted the help ppl were trying to give her. Just like elvis, the day she died she was not planning on passing away. She wakes her heart to a point that it have out. Ironic you can hear how she related to a lot of the songs she sang. That made it even more believable.

I've listened to many, many "reactions" to Karen's songs and yours is the most spot on I've ever heard. "It's impossible to listen to her and feel like you don't know her and want to be friends with her..." Is exactly right. I'm a 64 year old white dude with a bit of a belly. Right? Karen brings me to tears every time I hear her and No One brings me to tears. Her voice is haunting, sweet, and exactly perfect every time. I'm so glad I lived on this earth during a time when I was able to hear and enjoy this under-appreciated genius.

Dani, you and many other reviewers are captivated by her voice. Review her 1971 performance at 21yo A Place To Hideaway. Amazing, I promise. 7 Grammy nominations with 3 awards. Also, 1975 rock drummer on the year according to Playboy. Multiple gold/platinum albums. No auto-tune, twerking, screaming, stripping, piercings, just a voice that makes you listen. She was just as good live as in studio. Almost every song she recorded was in one take. Many artists thought she had an outstanding voice (including her friend Dionne Warwick). Alot of us believe she is the best female vocalist-ever. Never found love. Battled anorexia nervosa for many years, but continued singing, putting out albums, and died at 32.

There were so many well-known songs in the 1970's, and the styles and themes were so varied. But this song is quintessential in encapsulating the vibe of the seventies, to a large degree. It was a more simple and rustic way of living back then, while being modern at the same time in many aspects. We sure did have fantastic music back then. Imagine hearing this song on the radio on a Friday night up in your bedroom back then, after they had just played Stairway to Heaven/Highway Song/Yesterday/Bridge Over Troubled Water; or hearing it on a beautifully sunny Saturday morning when there wouldn't be a care in the world. It's the stuff of legends. . .

Well said, Dani. She has a vulnerability, and maybe a naivete, I think, that some people can relate to, coupled with one of the most angelic and nostalgic and, possibly, loneliest voices I've ever heard. I might sound dramatic, but her voice almost hurts you it's that subtle and powerful at the same time.

Karen Carpenter recorded this song at age 21 in one take. She heard it one time and went into the recording booth, read the lyrics off of a napkin and nailed it. She was known as "One Take Karen" because she recorded many of other songs in one take. Young people today don't realize what Karen & Richard were, what music in the 60's and 70's was. Artists that put out great music, one song after the other. Where I grew up (Southern Calif) you were either a huge Beach Boys fan, or a huge Beatles fan, plus the Carpenters and many more. The Beatles and the Beach Boys wrote great music that is still good today, but there were many artists that put out still relevant music, much written by Neil Sedaka and others. i guess what I'm saying is, it truly was a golden age of music, and the Carpenters were right out front.
