Superstar Constitution Hill blitzes Aintree Hurdle rivals - that's seven from seven!

Constitution Hill put the seal on a flawless campaign with a dominant performance in the 2023 William Hill Aintree Hurdle.
So impressive in winning last season’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham by 22 lengths, Nicky Henderson’s six-year-old has taken the step up into the big league this year with consummate ease.
Having left his top-class stablemate Epatante trailing in his wake in both the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle and the Christmas Hurdle, he produced another spectacular display in last month’s Champion Hurdle and was unsurprisingly cramped odds to make it seven from seven over hurdles on Merseyside.
What followed was another exhibition round from Constitution Hill (2-15), with jockey Nico de Boinville sending him to the front from the drop of the flag before upping the ante in the back straight.
The chasing pack had closed the gap by the time he turned for home, but De Boinville was still motionless in the saddle and only had push his mount out on the run-in to score by three lengths.
Sharjah came from the rear of the field to beat Zanahiyr to the runner-up spot, with last year’s winner Epatante only fourth this time around as her remarkable stable companion again stole the show.

The ears say it all! Look at how they’re pricked up the whole way - that’s a horse running well within himself with a lot left in the tank. Say what you will about the winning distance or how he ‘pulls up quickly’ he does everything Nico wants. When Nico wants him to speed up he speeds up, when Nico wants him to slow down he slows down. Watch the way he changes his legs and opens the gap again by a length or so when nick starts pushing, then he tightens the rein before the line and he eases again.

His balance in jumping at a high cruising speed is just brilliant. Not sure I've seen a better hurdler at speed than him.

Keep him hurdling and enjoy his greatness, hopefully take on impaire et passe and marine nationale next season . I like him at 2 mile although today was great to see

Marine Nationale is going chasing next season and so will probably Impaire Et Passe. I dont see any point in keepin C.Hill over hurdles. He'll just b slammin the same horses again. Go chasing and meet Marine Nationale in the Arkle. That's a real challenge

Can someone explain why they start like that the horse that came 2nd lost by let’s say 4 lengths but started 5 lengths behind. As an Aussie where all races start even from barriers i don’t understand why it is done like this and it seems very stupid.

Nico was looking at the big screen after the last and was holding them easily at cruising speed and only asked him to quicken in the last half furlong. Beautiful horse, very tidy jumper, he brushes the hurdles. Shame he's had so few outings this year. Banker for CH if he's fit.

Everyone is saying he beat older horses passed their best or horses that are not real grade 1 horses, but that doesn`t tell the true story, the reason is that the other trainers are cowards, they won`t race against him because they are scared of him, he has won everything basically jogging, no one has challenged him even remotely, he is still a baby and will only get better, i don`t think anyone has any idea how to run against him because he has proved that he can run any way on any ground, i don`t think they have seen a horse like this before and that scares trainers, the trainer of honeysuckle ran away, a two times champion hurdle winner was basically demoted because she would have been beaten if she`d run in that race, that has never happened before. Mullins and Elliot need to be asked why they enter 6 or 7 horses in races but when it comes to Constitution hill they run away scared.

Mullins ran two against him at Cheltenham, including his best hurdler. Elliott also took him on with Zanahiyr. Mullins and Elliott took him on again today, but Mullins didn't send his best horse. As usual he's keeping him for Punchestown.

How does anyone think this wasn't impressive?! He can win a race and be rode however and wherever, Nico only had to give him a slight push to pull away at the end, he's never been off the bridle, only way he loses is if he falls when he's clear.

I think Nico and Nicky are trying to give this horse longevity. It looks to me like keep it simple and steady Of course lots us would love to see him really give it juice It may please us to see him demolish the opposition But that prove to be a bad move Steady steady and great years ahead Wow Won a fortune on this horse at Cheltenham with very early anti post bets But in hurdles at the moment he’s not really backable. I manager to get 5/1 for the Arkle very quickly although that’s a bigger gamble than him winning the champion But who knows Thank you Nicky for looking after this duperdtar

Would love to see him come over to Punchestown for the Irish champion hurdle.But sadly it comes to close to this meeting for him and Shiskin. Two super stars. And yes given the value of these horses @ 1 million each who can blame owner and trainer for not being greedy I salute you. We all know Dawn Run was taken to France after her Cheltenham win and that race got her killed . One inhumane greedy owner,I never forgave her for the death of that incredible race mare. Roll on Cheltenham,March 2024 !!!

Good thing the winner is a very good jumper because one bungle and it might have been interesting. He was going nowhere fast at the finish even though he was pushed out. Whatever the owner is saying at the moment it looks odds on he will be back in the Champion Hurdle next year where Marine Nationale could well give him more to think about than this year's field.

That was his least impressive performance of what has been a very impressive season. What will they do with him next season ? On the one hand I'd love to see him go chasing just to see what he can do. On the other hand, I am disappointed at how the Champion Hurdle has lost so much of its lustre. Altior and Douvan were big losses to the Champion Hurdle. Even this season we saw Jonbon and El Fabiolo go straight over fences. I think on balance I'd like to see Constitution stay over hurdles next season. Maybe Impaire or Marine could emerge as credible challengers and breathe some life into it.

The great Istabraq got beat by Pridwell at Aintree but no one knocked Istabraq, Constitution Hill is unbeaten and beat Sharjah who's been 2nd in two Champion hurdles and is a better horse than Pridwell but people knock Constitution Hill rather unfairly.

@@suemaher5282You're talking crap, the 3 length win could so easily have been trebled if need be, he never looked in any danger whatsoever, Constitution Hill is still unbeaten unlike Istabraq who lost several times in his career and some people say he's the greatest, he couldn't even beat Pridwell (who lost 31 times over hurdles) in this race after winning the Champion Hurdle.

Perhaps, but look at the time of his races. He won in about 2m 44s as a novice at Cheltenham last year. That is very fast. He is a proper superstar !

He's beaten a honeysuckle who is past her peak best an Vauban and Sharjah in Ireland in the last 3 races before cheltenham. this is not top level grade 1 form. Infact the Irish will tell you the crop of 2m hurdlers are not upto much this year. This race was very weak. Sharjah zanahiyr and epatante in the place positions Sharjah has never top draw even at best and is clearly declining Zanahiyr has proved nothing in his career. And Epatantes last win was in grade 2 company. Like I said I don't question he is a grade 1 horse. But the depth of opposition is weak

I know people will say I'm being negative, but based on this he won't be winning a gold cup or getting further. Pulled himself up so quickly after the line and did not hit the line strongly. De Boinville had to shake him up to keep him up to his work. Could tell he was tired. Hopefully just a bounce 🙏

You could tell he was tired could you ? watch him over last to finish line he had half a tank left , tired horses even the class acts when they are running empty drift across the track Nico ask no questions of constitution hill today 3 mile races are slower than 2 miles and 2 mile 4 by quite a margin he's not going 3 miles running it like a 2 mile chase no horse is ..I didn't see a tired horse or one that wouldn't get any further

But surely even you could see that Nico was trying to give him as easy a race as possible at the end of a long season. His target all year was the Champion Hurdle, this was just a bonus. What would be the point today of going as hard as you can to win by 20 lengths?

How anyone can slate this horse is beyond me. Gets lazy in front because he hasn’t found a horse yet that can go with him for long enough to challenge him. Stay hurdling for another season and see after that I think.

Dress it up how you like but this is Constitution Hill's least impressive performance to date. Despite getting a solo in front and jumping the absolutely perfect round of hurdling he doesn't run away from them this time - in fact they are closing after jumping the last. I think sticking to 2 miles over hurdles should be the only plan from here on in.

No point. Nobody buys a horse with the intent of being/staying a hurdler. Over the fences is where it's at these days.

It was his least impressive performance, but, its the end of the season and Nico gave him the easiest possible race. Perfect way to end the season

This may be the last time we see Constitution Hill running over hurdles. I had hoped that he would have been kept to hurdling and set up a sequence of wins in the Champion Hurdle, but that doesn't look likely now. For me, personally, he is still the best hurdler I have seen in more than 60 years of following horse racing. He's truly exceptional.
