So glad you guys are finally doing some Supertramp......Such a gifted, versatile, and under appreciated band IMO. You could literally pick 15-20 of their songs and they would leave you blown away. The harmonica in "Take The Long Way Home", is mesmerizing to me. Thanks so much guys, hope you enjoy this band and get to more of their great stuff in the coming months.

Finally, my favourite band of all time. The Logical Song and Goodbye Stranger are the two most played songs from the album but there is not a bad song on the LP. You need to hit ANY song from their four consecutive classic albums between 1974-79: Crime of the Century (my favourite album by anyone ever), Crisis? What Crisis?, Even in the Quietest Moments and Breakfast In America (their most successful commercially). The next LP, Famous Last Words (1982) is also a great album. Please, please guys react to a lot more Supertramp. The ultimate anti-education system song by them is School, the lead tune from Crime of the Century. It has such a haunting harmonica intro. Supertamp uses a lot of saxophone, harmonica and even occasional clarinet but they are most known for the electric piano playing of lead singers/somgwriters Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson. Their overall musicianship is among the best of any group but their lyrics are often serious with great social commentary. Get on the 'Tramp train boys.

Actually there are a fair few albums that are flawless (just off the top of my head I would go with: Disraeli Gears (by Cream), Cosmo's Factory (Creedence Clearwater Revival), Aqualung (Jethro Tull), L.A. Woman (The Doors), Led Zeppelin IV (??), Machine Head (Deep Purple), Demons & Wizards (Uriah Heep), Close to the Edge (Yes), Foxtrot (Genesis), For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night (Caravan) & Secret Treaties (Blue Öyster Cult). What was class about Supertramp was that they pulled off the trick after releasing two albums that were average at best. The follow ups were anything but average however with Crime of the Century & Breakfast in America being flawless and Crisis? What Crisis? & Even in the Quietest Moments being damn close 🥰🥰🥰🥰

"You hear the phone ringing?" Actually, that wasn't a phone. It was a Mattel Electronics Football game, which was a first generation handheld game that was very popular at the time. The tone that was in the song was the tone you get when you fail to get a first down on 4th down and have turned the ball over to the opponent.

John Helliwell is such a boss on this track. The way he does that clap, looks around and across to Roger ‘Jesus’ Hodgson, effortlessly collects the sax and takes centerstage for the solo. 70’s swag! In addition to Supertramp being such a cool band name, they were just so full of talent with so many instruments here: the alto sax, Wurlitzer electronic piano, electric guitar, 12-string acoustic guitar, bass, Elka and Oberheim synthesisers, acoustic piano, Hammond organ, Hohner Clavinet with wah-wah, siren whistle, drums, castanets, timbales, cowbell, and woodblocks!

Love your reaction!! The meaning of the song isn’t really just digging at the school system - it’s about our social system. You grow up and everything is innocent then they throw you into school you must comply. Then you get out of school and you must watch what you say or they will throw you in jail or a psych ward and medicate you hence the vetchtable lyric !! It’s amazing analogy

All album covers are dated (or of their time) but you should actually examine the full sized one on vinyl. This one won a Grammy for designers Mike Doud and Mick Heggerty. (BTW who did the skyline in your background ?) The statue of liberty is depicted by a waitress and the Manhattan skyline is made up of breakfast condiments and menus, the piers by knifes and forks. Rejecting an all American girl they chose Libby from the "Ugly Models" agency. The rear cover shows the band at a breakfast diner and they are all reading newspapers from their hometowns. The LP labels are also interesting as they depict the waitress shown from the front (A side) and the rear (B side). Uniquely the inside of the sleeve is finished in orange, probably the first album to have such a coloured feature hidden from normal view. In this promo John Anthony Heliwell is sat at a Table with an umbrella as featured on the album cover for "Crisis? What crisis ?" (1975) and the unused grand piano is a reference to their previous album "Even in the quietest moments" (1977)

I watched a video on YT where Roger Hodgson explains the meaning behind this song. In a nutshell, the boarding schools in England at the time were popping out individuals who went in as hopeful, sensitive and imaginitive children and because of the treatment and indoctrination they received there, they came out as cynical, angry and unemotional people. The song was a protest against that educational system. Rick Davies disagreed with Hodgson and wrote a song addressing Hodgson's outspokenness called Bloody Well Right.

The drummer is using traditional grip with the left hand which came out of the jazz tradition going back to drummer boys during the Civil War who used it when Snare drums were slung at a 45 degree angle. Most rock guys don’t use it, but a few of my favorites do use it in rock. Steve Smith of Journey totally came out of a jazz background, Stewart Copeland of the Police and Neil Peart who actually changed from matched to traditional grip late in his career after working with a jazz teacher in order to revamp his technique. There are a lot of others, but on the whole most rock guys use matched grip of which there are many variations, but that’s a whole other conversation lol.

Empathy is not illogical, but rather, illogical is the man completely removed from empathy.

This is a great version of a studio song “performed” by the band. It looks real, but the band is “singing” a mastered studio version. 😁❤️
