The real owner of Ragnar should stand up and identify himself, and give proof of ownership to the authorities. That would be the obvious solution? Because this has not happened you can understand the concern and suspicion. Or, my understanding is Ragnar was converted by Icon Shipyards in the Netherlands, so the real authorities should be able to find out who paid for the work?

I think this is the solution as you have laid it out. There is history on this channel's other videos of a russian owner replacing a non-russian crew (suddenly, recently) with a russian crew. I can't remember which video of this channel (eSysman SuperYachts) mentioned this crew-swap - I am pretty sure the crew swap was to have taken place right around the time putin went into Ukraine. It was as if "non-russian crew in good times, russian crew when we might be in trouble" was the owner's thinking. To your point, they can disambiguate the ownership immediately if the owner identifies himself. You want to trust the 'grapevine' too - if those folks on the ground in Norway fully believe this is a russian owner, connected to putin, I'd wager better than 50/50 odds they know the truth. The vessel's crew could have easily disclosed this "confidentially' to people in the local yacht operation industry there, and that's how the word got out.

The captain can clear the whole thing up by calling the owner, and asking for a one off declaration of ownership. By not doing so, implies some level of guilt. No-one needs to know the owner's name, just the nationality. If it's from a Russian satellite state, further information would be needed.

If you enter a nation with a car you must be aware to declare the car's ownership. Why does Ragnar think this not to be valid for a ship?
@jamier7073
@jamier7073 2 жыл бұрын
Because you are ignorant of how these ships are owned that is why. They are primarily owned by companies owned by several other companies and few have a personal owner. This is like a company jet. You can't force a company to provide services/products to an individual. If that company thinks that by providing fuel to Ragnar, they are helping Russian oligarchs and they don't want to do it, so be it. If the owner of the vessel is not who everyone thinks it is, then the real owner can come forward, demonstrate ownership, and the problem is solved. I understand billionaires want to keep their assets hidden for tax evasion and money laundering purposes, but their needs don't trump everyone else's rights or needs.

@@saber-jocky3436 That’s not how these purchases are made. There is ownership paperwork, but the listed owner doesn't have to be a person; it can be a company. Massive purchases like yachts, land, other companies, and even cars are often done in the name of a holding, or shell, company - sometimes several layers of holding companies. Who owns that holding company is a completely different set of paperwork that someone asking for the boat's registration wouldn't be entitled to ask for. The paperwork for the boat is legal and accurate if it identities a holding company as the owner. So, everybody has to play by the rules that someone else created to avoid culpability in any situation? What if the owner is a criminal with criminal liabilities? I agree with the statement, but I also have that feeling the entire story is media shooting from the hip, without properly checking the facts.... I got that weird felling about it. The yacht isn't military grade, it's just a normal exploration yacht, build on a offshore ship hull, painted in some dark colors, carrying mini-submarines that can have up to 3 persons onboards, for the rich people that want to see the life under water. If Russia wanted to take a cable, they send out on of there specialized vessel and do it in broad daylight, something we quite often see and they have done since the cold war-era. They even have Submarines based on there nuclear submarines that do that to, they would wast resources on a yacht for this. There is a video on youtube, where you can see the interior of Ragnar, and there isn't space for specialized equipment. Due to this, I do get that felling that something isn't right with the story around "Ragnar"! But how knows. they could have gutet the interior just a month after it was build, for playing a stupid game... but then the Norwegian military that was onboard an inspected the ship, would noticed it!

Fantastic and informative videos and have been a long time subscriber, keep up the excellent service. What will happen to these super yacht’s being not used/ maintained for so long. I have no compassion for their owners (and I doubt if any one else has either, especially the Ukrainian people) fee’s for moorings etc will have to be paid as the agents will get no mates rates. Time will tell

If the crew are getting paid and allowed on and off the boat then I see no issues for them. Solar panels are readily available, as are leisure batteries and controllers. Only issue I can think of is pumps. Ownership loopholes should not be allowed so tough luck.

I'm not so sure it is a valid point. As far as I understand russian food industry (that includes fishing) is not subject to sanctions so any company/country is free to do business with any russian company in that industry. Russian oligarchs are though (some of them), so if there is suspicion or is unclear who the real owner is then companies can choose not to sell them any fuel until the matter is resolved.

@@saber-jocky3436 That's my point. They sell fuel to the fishing vessels because they are not on the sanctions list so they are free to do business with them if they so choose, but they also have every right to refuse service to luxury yachts for any reason they choose, either waiting to get more information on the owners or just because.

+40 years ago, the USSR, East German, “fishing trawlers” was to be found even on Tyne River. (and everywhere else) I was there for months, but never saw those “fishing trawlers” go fishing any fish, but they had all kinds of electronics running, even their sonar, every time a British navy ship was passing. It’s very hard to believe Russian “Super yachts” doesn’t serve a similar purpose. I’m quite sure those vessels didn’t find anything of importance 40 years ago, but they was annoying and downright a harassment, when they pinged their sonar. Those “Super yachts” need to be arrested, and the bill for having them under arrest, sent to the owner. If not paid, then those vessels could be auctioned locally for scrap. Normal procedure on a normal yacht, there’s no reason to go specially soft, because it’s a Russian owned “Super yacht”. I’m sorry for the crew, as they probably loose their salary and tickets home, but that’s not new to a seaman.

Privacy is a luxury most people who lead otherwise public lives covet…. And thus the ones who can get away from their everyday lives and go to sea for a vacation…. Time for a sea change (pun intended). There wouldn’t be the same issue if the ownership of this (or any other boat) was transparent. As it is, the Norwegian people are taking a moral stance that they feel to be right regarding this boat. Crew are in catch 22, because if they were to provide real proof of ownership they still wouldn’t get any fuel. Might as well fly home and get a different job.

So if the Norwegian government boarded it and has examined the papers why can't the government settle the question of who actually owns the vessel? The management company says it isn't owned by a Russian. The Norwegian government should now know if that is true. It is possible the fuel companies are acting based on bogus information. Lets at least make sure people are acting on facts, not rumor.

@johngori9477

@@vonnikon Maybe Yachts are different, but when the Navy had me boarding merchant ships we were ALWAYS able to identify the actual owner through all the layers of holding companies. The ships' masters were usually very obliging because they wanted to get matters resolved and have us leave so they could get on with their voyage. They'd open the safe (or locking file cabinet) and pull out the ship's documents (ownership, registration, safety inspections, crew licenses, etc.) and lay them out in the Captain's stateroom for examination. We'd pass the info by radio to our ship who would verify it by satellite link to make sure the papers were valid. That was a lot of years ago, so I assume the technology is at least as good today. Hence my curiosity about why the Norwegian military/government wouldn't be able to know who the ultimate owner is after they stopped and searched the vessel.

" the appropriate authorities". Most, if now all governments, councils and authorities are plain DUNs registered corporations today. Go to Dun and Bradstreet and type in the name of your state or council. The one you pay taxes too. Then you'll see they are a simple company, and have no true authority. It will probably only be a few years old too..
