One reason I like this song (not just because of the movie) is because I am very soft spoken and it gets very frustrating when other people try talking over me, unintentionally or otherwise. I've gotten more assertive lately, but still, my speaking level is always at library level.

What a great song.! I am from one of the last generation of people who think little girls should be quiet and obedient and never have an opinion of their own. I could have used this song back in the 50's. Of course, now I am a 73 year old rebel, doing comicons and selling my soft sculpture dragons. I am the oldest nerd there and you know what? I am accepted and loved and no one tells me to shut up. Whoever wrote this song is my hero. .You can out live your tormentors. I am proof. Never give up.

One reason I love this song is because I relate to the lyrics (prolly not the meaning but the lyrics deffinantly) when I first heard it I was in a abusive household, when I got out I was defiant and when I listened to the lyrics better, I found out I relate to the lyrics like “ try to lock me in this cage I won’t just lay me down and die!” Reminds me of how I’d be locked in my room for days or even weeks.

I low key think imma sing this for my school's talent show. It'll be a little harder for me to sing 'cause I have a lower voice than she does but I'm kinda set on singing it. The main reason I wanna sing this is I'm autistic, so I really struggle in social interactions, especially when someone talks over me. I have literally no self esteem and have debilitating social anxiety, and this song reminds me of how I feel when I'm struggling to get my point across or get into an argument but my anxiety wont let me speak up for myself.... if that makes sense at all. It's like I wanna say something but at the same time I'm having a panic attack so... no dice. But music lets me express myself in a way that I can't anywhere else. When I'm singing I feel confident, beautiful, amazing... it makes me come alive in a way nothing else in this world can. So imma sing this song for all the times I've been told my opinion doesn't matter. For all the times my anxiety prevented me from saying something when someone was bullying me. For all the times I've felt frozen with fear. For all the times that I've been speechless, whether because of someone else or my own fucked up brain... Because I won't be silent anymore.

Strange thing is when I first heard this song it made me feel strong facing the violence I experienced from female family members. Now I know it means the opposite of what I thougt and when I listen to it i think about the moment, when my mother pushed me down the stairs. It makes me feel sad alone and helpless as the child I was when it happend.

@@Freakyturdle I wanted to walk up the stairs and she wanted to walk down so she pushed me and I fell backwards. She said this is what would happen to me if I don't learn to be more considerate of other people. So I guess somehow I deserved it.
