Supreme Court cancels Biden's cancellation of student loan debt

The Supreme Court ruled President Biden does not have authority for his roughly $400 billion program to forgive student loan debt, the latest blow from a Supreme Court that has been dismissive of this administration’s bold claims of power.
The vote was 6 to 3 along ideological lines, with Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. writing for the court’s dominant conservatives.

All bailouts followed have followed the supreme court decision. Understand why the Supreme Court decision was valid before you attempt to argue. It wasnt that the loan forgiveness programs were unconstitutional it was the method they were being implemented was overreach. Biden did not have the authority to create such a program only Congress does. Read the decision it literally quotes speaker of the house Nancy Pelosi, stating only Congress has the power to pass something like that. The Supreme Court voted the correct way, wether you agree or not. This battle needs to be fought in Congress not pushed through by the President.

That’s a bit misleading . Tuition was never set at the national level…and lots of universities have always had tuition and fees But yes..some public universities were tuition free ( they still charged fees though) That was a decision left to the individual states and universities. The thing is…colleges are expensive to run now. There’s not a single state that could afford the costs associated with their public universities…except maybe the very small states with 1 or2 schools. Yes, the costs are out of hand…but that another matter entirely….one in which not even the universities are willing to deal with ( administrator and professor payroll costs are astronomically high…as opposed to when the universities were tuition free)…not to mention program costs, property, research, athletics teams..etc. It makes no difference if they were once free or not…we live in a very different world now.

Government is in cahoots with banks and corperations to keep the people dependent on the government. The answer is less government. Let bad companies collapse and pave the way for new companies not in the pockets of government. Let bad banks fail also. It just goves governments more power. The us needs a government with less power. It is supposed to be for the people by the people. I would be most of the people dont feel like the government is upholding that tradition.

The only difference between student loan debt and a construction worker buying a $100,000 truck for work is one’s a piece of paper that’s supposed to get you a good job and the other is a vehicle that allows you to have a decent job. Like seriously did anyone force you to go to collage? Nope. Did anyone make you learn a useless degree? Nope. Is it anyones fault but your own you’re stuck working in Starbucks with a gender studies degree? Comprehensive student loan reform is needed. A freeze needs to be put on new loans until universities are forced to limit the costs that they pass on to students. Schools are poorly managed and that needs to change. Also, current student loans should be dropped to zero interest plus an administrative fee. The price of these loans should not be passed on to tax payers. Everyone has money issues, not just people with student loans.

The real issue is that there's too high of a demand (a ton of college students) and not enough actual supply (colleges with space), so they had to hike the prices up because they had so many additional people that the colleges we have aren't prepared for in terms of things like dorms, teachers, and other expenses. It's very possible that there's also a mismanagement of money going on, but it's not the whole issue. If there were more colleges, like way more, then prices would probably go down.
@XYZpro7846
@XYZpro7846 Жыл бұрын
@elainadeeter9788 Just a thought.. If students didn't have access to unlimited borrowing, would a college require a 500 dollar textbook that contains the exact same information as the text put out 10 or more years ago? The school obviously gets a kickback for using a new text every semester, with no benefit to the student. Same thing with lab fees. Grad students who make hardly anything often teach these labs, why is an extra lab fee needed? How about student fees that pay for services that many students don't use? Why is there an additional fee on top of student fees for parking? I personally feel that so many people are competing for teaching positions now, that a professor's salary could be half of what they are currently paid. These are just a few examples of a system based on students having the ability to borrow to the extreme. There is no motivation to help students, only for more people who want to get paid in the system.
@lordfraybin

Those who are smart & pay off their debts will be taxed to pay for the dumb choices of others. That's wrong. - How does this help improve the long-term issue of the cost of college? He tried to cancel debts for everyone with a law that applied only to a small subset of the population, and only allowed for modification or deferral of payments if I'm remembering correctly. Cancellation isn't a modification or deferral. Equating the two is like saying the French Nobles had their statuses "modified" during the rebellion. Presidents have and should continue to have VERY limited power. Permitting or ignoring tyrannical and/or power-grabbing behavior just because you like the individual doesn't end well :p Don't be like Dementia Joe, remember why we have separated powers.

@codycarr4544

Simple, simple interest. And only federal (the government that is claiming to want to forgive student debt) loans compound. A private student loan through a bank typically is on a simple interest plan. So the guys who are bankrolling the debt train, are claiming they want to forgive the debt. How would they do this? By taking out a loan from the FED, increasing interest rates across all loan types. Now housing, personal and business loans would all be impacted negatively. Guess who wouldn’t worry about increased rates on loans? Large corporate conglomerates who subsidize banks, thereby having a license to print their own money. In the end, everyone gets screwed and college kids think they’re getting a big break, only to find out when they graduate, that they can’t get a loan to start a business, lack the credit to receive a personal loan and can’t sustain the necessary payments for a housing loan. But on the bright side they have a great education they can remind themselves of while sweeping floors in the communal hut.
