On September 09, 2004 The John Adams Institute hosted an evening with Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Having been known for his powerful intellect and unequivocal opinions, Antonin Scalia served 28 years on the U.S. Supreme Court. Having been considered one of the Court’s most conservative justices, he was regarded by George W. Bush as a model for future judicial appointments, which lead to speculation that he could one day occupy the Chief Justice’s chair.
Not surprisingly, Scalia had attracted his share of admirers and critics alike. His writings for the Court reflected a strong personal style and obvious passion, which made him a colorful and controversial character on the American legal scene.
Antonin Scalia passed away in 2016.
Bert van Delden moderated the evening.

This is a precious treasure. The audience puts very hard questions in front of Justice Scalia and he answers at his best. I think those questions put forward the best of him. This is so valuable, thanks so much for sharing. Is there the other part with Justice Breyer?

Some very poorly framed questions from the audience, who understandably knew very little about the US system of government and Supreme Court.

Interesting to hear the question about Chevron -- when it seems that the conservative bank of the current court is on the very urge of discarding Chevron completely (to the betterment, IMO). The congress has been LAZY with regard to writing legislation. It's up to them to legislate PRECISE laws, rather than vague laws which are then clarified by bureaucrats.

She is the judge of the ECtHR, nominated to the Netherlands Supreme Court, why couldn't she?

@@mrfrost6337is scalia a donkey? The uni is hosting him and he schooled her aswell on the point she brought up. If she made a good point and was correct it would be diffrent.

She goes to her court and creates new "rights" out of thin air. And then forces them unto the people of like 27 countries. Totally deranged to pretend this is the least democratic.

@56:00 The best question was the question that wasn’t even asked. Standing (locus standi), or lack there of, is a major issue that Justice Scalia has with European courts and I would’ve loved to hear it. Also, why would you ask political questions to a Justice? Especially one who is an originalist…. Why would he care if Ralph Nader isn’t allowed in the debates? Those are private organizations that produce them not the government. What a wasted question. Even that other girl getting all upset over the Electoral College and not knowing who the electors were? The States are the ones that pick the electors and a Supreme Court Justice has no say in that. She said she wrote or was writing a paper on it which is just sad lol. There are a lot of arguments for/against the Electoral College, but not knowing what their names are isn’t it. Maybe she is complaining about the “winner takes all” electors from the state and she wants it split up by percentage of votes…. But even then, states have plenary power over that, so why waste the question on a federal judge. I really want to know what she got on that paper lol
