Saamundi means those who live by the ocean. Bhittai has used the word Vanjaara for the men and Vanjaariyian for the women who are left behind waiting as the men voyage into the ocean. Their journey is an uncertain one. They do not know if they'll return or get swallowed by the rough waters.
