Suraielec Watt Meter vs. Kill A Watt

Are cheaper energy monitors good enough to measure power usage? I tried a cheaper brand on Amazon and was surprised that the functionality is even better than the more expensive version. The reading is slightly different by about 1%. The current and wattage reading is higher by 1% on the Suraielec but I think this difference is not very important for the intended purpose which is mainly to kill vampire power or just have a rough idea of how much wattage some appliances use. Perhaps even 5% accuracy is good enough for 'checking' the usage in a home use setting.

so I guess the Surailec does not tell you projected cost for for day/week/month / year ? yes or no

you can also cut open a power cable and use a clamp style multimeter on one of the leads to get voltage and amperage (to calculate watts).

Lol true but it's not built for heavy usage over a long period of time , it's just for testing ... With the watt meter you can leave a fan plugged in for hours to see how much kw you're burning, with the multimeter it might probably melt

Do you know if this catches a surge? I want to test a few window AC units. They’re all around 6k-7k btu My main concern is the initial surge I want to know what it goes up to Since I’ll be posting them with a 1,200 watt generator So do you think the cheaper one would catch the intial surge ? Thanks

Avoid cheaper Suraielec, had one same function just look a bit different shell, the problem sometime plug in get blank display and just won't turn on, a weeks or months later plug in working again. The Kill A Watt always working even I have it may be 10 years.

If the outer shell is not exactly the same, the internals may be completely different. The Suraielec still works on my end since this video.
