If British East India company didn’t move it’s headquarters in 1686 from Surat to Bombay islands, Surat would have been biggest city of India and financial hub as Surat was biggest port city of that time, and East India company setup factory there and made headquarter. But, land there was on rent & high taxes from king while East India company won Bombay islands from Portuguese and they developed Bombay islands from nothing and moved their headquarter, as it was their own land so they can control rules. As East India Company became big trader while Trading in Surat, when they moved to almost empty islands of Bombay, all Gujarati traders also moved who were actively doing business with them, and Bombay was developed mostly by those traders initially and still most big businesses families of Bombay are Gujaratis... Till 20-25 years after moving of headquarter, Surat was bigger than Bombay of that time. But, with rise of British influence & pandemic in 17th century, Surat lost all to Bombay and never go up to foot. In 1962, partition of Bombay state to Gujarat & Maharastra, Gujarati people lost India’s biggest city which they had developed but still Gujarati has created big city like Ahmedabad & Surat, after partition. If Mumbai was kept as capitol city of Gujarat & Maharastra both, Mumbai would have been even bigger success than what it is right now...
