Back in the 90s I used to listen to Djivan Gasparyan. It was my introduction to Armenian music. Then, as now, what I love is the dance between the one, constant, solid note, and the lighter melody accompanying it. I imagine the notes as two dancers dancing around each other. At the time I lived in East Hollywood, CA, and there was a large Armenian immigrant population there. Then most of them moved to the nearby city of Glendale where another "little Armenia" formed. For some reason, I always had a special interest in their culture and history. Perhaps in a past life time I had some kind of connection to Armenia . . .

This music is reminiscent of a country that was at the crossroads of every major stepping stone in World History. Noah and Mount Ararat Human migration Persian Empire Silk Road Roman Empire Christianity Mongols Medieval Renaissance World Wars Soviet Rule Just to name a few. The music is both mature, reflective and saddened by years of so much experience as are the people who have created it. Relaxing, maybe, but it is much more emotional than that. Despite these strong emotions, I can say I have never met a more welcoming and happy community in my life. -From an American who traveled across the world and married an Armenian Princess.

Before there were governments and religions who used the tools of propaganda to segregate us against one another for their own gain of money and power, we had the joy and beauty of diversity of culture, we were tied to the earth, we were raised on the values of respect, courage, wisdom and generosity. Most of this music will have been created in Ancient times, when the Kingdom of Armenia was a powerful force in the world of antiquity, yet seems to be with a sense of sorrowful foreboding. As though they knew their civilisation would be left far behind one day. The music of the Duduk stands strong as though clawing it's way through the countless centuries, to tell the people of the future that the Kingdom of Armenia was once great and that one day, all civilisation will someday fall just as they did. What matters is what we can leave behind.
