As long as the majority are "doing unto others," being respectful, and having a good time, crowds aren't necessarily a deal breaker. A chance to meet some new mates, make some moves, etc. Certainly better than loving the surf and being totally landlocked.

In 2008, Huntington Beach won a court case against Santa Cruz for the rights to use the name "Surf City USA." Unfortunately the previous commenter only provided his opinion rather than give you a straight answer. Semper Fidelis my friend, surf's up...OUTSIDE!!
