View From the Beach - Lynnhaven Inlet Virginia Beach, VA. This is the first in a series of videos I will be doing over the next several months. It is intended to give surf fishermen, new and experienced, some ideas on how to explore new territory. The information and opinions I put forth are based solely on my 35+ years of surf fishing experience, and are not intended to be presented as the only way of doing anything. Surf fishing is a life long journey. You never stop learning along he way and it never gets old, so I hope this video offers you something you can use on your journey.

For a video that simply promotes itself as fishing an inlet you have made the best how-to video I have ever seen on reading the beach for fishing. I have tried the last couple of years at looking for videos on KZfaq and other places on how to read the beach for structures, but none of them even remotely teaches people anything about reading the beach like you have. Thank you for your time and your generosity to share what you know. If you would grant me a wish, I wish your video would be a little clearer so that I could see the details that you were describing a little better. Please don't be offended with what I said about the video quality, it is very good, but as with anything in life there is always room for improvement and I'm hoping when your next video comes out it will be so clear that I have no problem seeing every detail that you mention. Other than that you did an outstanding job! I'm heading to Virginia Beach for the first time on Monday for some fishing and swimming. Wish me luck and good luck to you also! Tight lines!

Thank you Grand Wonder and I wish you well on your trip to VB. I agree that the video quality is not up to snuff. Haven't been able to afford a go-pro yet, so I'm using an older camera that's not HD. Hopefully I'll be able to upgrade soon. I'll be doing a few more videos soon, so stay tuned. As for reading water, it takes a little time, but once you know what your looking for, it becomes easier. I'll elaborate in future videos. Thanks again and be well.

richtroxler Hey Rich, thanks a bunch for your response! I fished with my brother at the pier located behind the Best Western Plus Hotel where all the swimmers go to. It wasn't a good day for fishing on that Monday that we were there, but we did manage to catch three spade fish, several ocean perch, one snapper blue, one sea trout, and 21 keeper-sized crabs. Not exactly great fishing since we spent about 10.5 hours fishing there both during the day and night. I imagine if I went to one of the inlets I would probably do better, but I was with my family and a friend so I had to accommodate them as well. I did hooked into a big fish and lost it during the fight when it pulled my line into the pilings. A lady fishing next to me said it must have been a puppy drum. Thanks a bunch for all the pointers and encouragement you give me. I look forward to your next video!

Well I finally broke down and ponied up the dough for a GoPro camera, so my video quality should take a quantum leap. Got the headstrap so that I can fish and shoot at the same time, so I'll be mixing in some fish catching video with the informational stuff. Fish catching video footage is fun, but most of my videos are an attempt to stuff as much information as I can fit in them. When ever I finish a video, there's 20 more things I wanted to talk about and didn't get to lol.

Thanks Hunted, I appreciate the kind words. I am planning a few more videos as soon as I can get some time with at least one of them being on the open beach. Reading ocean beaches is little more difficult than reading bay channels, but once you know what to look for and how to look for it, it really helps your chances of finding fish. Thanks again and glad you found the video useful.

Glad I stumbled across your channel. We lived in VA Beach for 5 years before the Navy exiled me to PA. I fished and kayaked the Lynnhaven River Inlet numerous times with good success. I will watch your other videos and hope we get back down to Tidewater soon.

Welcome Mo and sorry for your forced exile. They just rebuild the Lesner Bridge so hopefully after the construction noise settles down the fish will return. The bay just inside was (is) really good this year, except for flounder. There were some, just not a lot. Puppy Drum were really on this year. I have a couple videos from my kayak catching them. If you get back down here, message me and maybe we'll get out on the bay. Thanks for watching and be well.

Good stuff! There's a lot of useful tips & information here for many fishermen who are primarily surfcasters, like myself. 'Reading the beach or the surf' is a much needed but tough subject to explain. Thanks for addressing it! There aren't too many fishermen trying to clearly explain the different structures and elements that are encountered in salt-water fishing. Great job on tackling one of the most challenging aspects of surf fishing! Again, thanks for sharing valuable insights and a better look into what's going on just beneath the surface. Well done! It will be interesting to see how your new fishing spot works out for you?

Great info about where to cast the line. Had to write a comment, your one video talks about Barnegat Light Inlet which is where I did most of my fishing growing up and this spot Lynnhaven Inlet under the Lesner Bridge which is where I have had luck now that I am in Va Beach. The current under this bridge is insane and a perfect area to observe how water behaves. Anyway thought it was cool you described two spots that are very familiar to me, great info keep it coming.

You're in VB, maybe we should wet a line sometime. I kayak Lynnhaven quite a bit and yes, a moon tide around that bridge really gets the water ripping. Paddling can wear your arms out after a while lol. Some good fluke fishing around there.

Thanks Rich. One of my club members posted this to our club facebook and I am so delighted to see your work here. Its great that you pay so much attention to detail on structure. I think this is the "missing link" in most fishing videos. Most are about the fight or win. Even John Skinner who is so good at discussing tactical issues does not come close to your attention to detail (not to say that Skinner is anything but great). Can't wait to see more. Thanks again. Hope to see you on the beach. Best Justonelastcast John Copen PS would love to know your thoughts on debs inlet (Atlantic Beach) if you ever fished there. It's a tough inlet to fish. Been productive for me but the rips, post rip flats and back rips are tough to figure.

You are very welcome John and thank you for your kind words. I have a couple other videos out on reading the beach and I am working on finishing the third in the series but have not had much time lately. As for Debs, I never really fished that far west from the surf. Fished it from a friends boat several times many years ago, but don't have a lot of local knowledge on it. Jones to Shinny was pretty much my stomping grounds. Let's hope the bass recover so we actually have something to fish for ;-) Speaking of rips, in deep inlets the structure that makes the rips is not usually right under the water you see on the surface. It's usually upcurrent of it so adjust casts accordingly. A lot of people cast over the fishes heads.

Used to fish below the other end of the bridge (east side of inlet). Many a summer day back in the early/mid 70s. Very few stripers back then. Mostly flounder. A few speckled trout. Good crabbing with raw chicken pieces of a string.

They just finished building a new bridge there. Shut everybody out for 3 years. We'll have access to the base of the bridge in December, so I'll be paying a visit soon lol. Lynnhaven has excellent crabbing. I sometimes bring an extra bucket and a couple legs / net when I'm on my kayak fishing for puppy drum. Nothing finer than a puppy drum fillet with crab meat stuffing :-)

Thanks for this video -- finally found something about surf/shore fishing in my area. I hope you would post more of these types. Virginia beach shore fishing unlike pier fishing, which is popular here, for me is very challenging in that game fish is really hard to come by. Which is why videos like these can be very helpful. I was actually just in the area last night, no luck on biggies, just a couple of rays and a small shark. This construction area on the very spot you empasized on "good structure" make things inaccesible (sp?). I was almost tempted to get over the fence that has "no trespassing" signs on. Anyways, being fairly new in VB, I can't wait to watch more of your explorations of the area. Thanks again, sir.
@richtroxler
@richtroxler 9 жыл бұрын
palabful Hi palabful. I made this video just after I moved into the area, before I knew they were planning to rebuild the bridge. My solution to the "No Trespassing" signs was to buy a kayak lol. That whole area has a load of potential, but the noise of construction has thrown off the bite some. The flats area in the bay will have some puppy drum fishing in the fall, primarily from the yak, but there is some shore access around there, just have to sniff it out. I do have 3 other videos on my channel that are about reading beach structure, with samples from Long Island to OBX. In addition to the Lesner Bridge area, you can also look south to the Sandbridge and Back Bay areas. I will probably do a video this fall about that area.

To be clear, this video was shot on the old bridge. This bridge has subsequently been replaced by a new bridge. The shore area around the bridge is still the same except for the dock wall area where they used to tie up the barges. I should do a new video some day. Access is now open on both sides of the bridge. You park in the lot on the west side of the bridge (last light before crossing bridge). You can catch flounder from the shore right now, and tons of croaker and spot on bait. Good speckled trout fishing in the fall. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for a really great video. I have just tried to fish there (August 2017) but there is no access. The contractor for the bridge is using the whole of the area for staging the bridge project. The locals think it will be at least another year before the bridge is complete and the area reopens for fishing.

Hi David. Yeah, this was the first video I made when I first moved here 3.5 years ago. They hadn't started construction on the new bridge yet. I went down to fish it that spring and couldn't get access either lol. I fish the area by kayak all the time but would have loved the opportunity to throw some bucktails at that bridge. Once it's done and they get all the equipment out of there, that area will settle down and the fish will move back in. I've had bad luck with bridge rebuilds both here and my former haunts of Long Island.

I've been down there three times to look at what your talking about. I went fishing in the ocean here for my first time. I'm a Wyoming fly fishermen, so this is different but doable. I didn't catch anything but I know it's me. I'm going to keep going and hope to learn. I'm not sure about my rigging but I'll keep at it. I noticed my pincile lure seems to drag into the bottom, even removing the paint from the nose. The Laure is weighted so maybe it too heavy, I don't know if that is the reason. But like fly fishing I learned to become pretty good at it, I know this will come in time. Thank you for your insite.

Hi James. I apologize for the late reply, I had some personal business to attend to. The bridge in this video is no longer there. Right after I moved here and took the vids used, they decided to replace the bridge. They built the new just north of the one in this video, so everything has changed there now. I was there yesterday on my kayak and things have changed quite a bit. I really should do a new video on it and take this one down. The principles in this video remain the same and some of the sand bars are still there, but the bridge is further north now. I do believe that they have opened access to that area now (on both sides of the bridge) but haven't walked it yet myself. If you see people fishing there, and more importantly, catching, watch what they do. It's early in the season yet but I suspect you will find good fishing for Speckled Trout this fall there. Thanks for watching and keep at it.

Hi Chris. There is a fishery for striped bass there for a little while longer, mostly small fish. They can be caught throughout the winter in the Elizabeth River. I may do another video but the new bridge is further out than the old one and the lights are in the middle of the lanes, so the old shadow line is not there anymore. To be honest, I haven't shore fished the new bridge much because it wasn't open until recently, so there is access to shore on both sides. I see it from my kayak. Still worth a shot. You might want to give "The Wall" a shot on Broad channel. It's right down the road from the Lesner bridge. It's where I shot my bucktailing video. Thanks for watching. Be well and stay safe.

Hi Erik. My understanding is that the area is closed for 3 years while they rebuild the bridge. And while improvising ways to get to get to where I want to fish is something I've always done (and it's cost me plenty in fines and tickets lol), I'm new down here and don't want to get off on the wrong foot with the local law enforcement. I'm actually doing a paint job down on the outer banks (Kill Devil Hills) right now and the house is right on the beach (lucky me ;-)) and will be using some of the footage I've shot there in my next video. That bridge was the first thing I saw when I came down here from Long Island and it's very similar to the bridges I used to fish up there ( a total of 11 bridges in all). Let me know if you can still fish it because I'd love to take a few shots at it.

It's still fishable, and it seems as though the construction equipment may have created some different holes! I'll keep hitting it hard until the new year. The project is supposed to take 36 months from it's start date this past January, but in talking to some of the guys working on it, progress was already behind by April. It will be interesting to see what happens to the fishing down there, specifically since there are currently 13-14 sets of pilings in the water, the new bridge will only have 5...

What do you look for in the shadow line?
@richtroxler
@richtroxler 8 жыл бұрын
Striped bass and other fish. They tend to line up in the shadow, facing the tide, with their noses right up on the shadow line. Weakfish, or what they call Gray Trout down here, will actually stick their noses into the shadow, on the downtide side of the shadow, and have their tails sticking out into the light. I guess they think they're hiding lol.

This comment just popped up in my feed under "not responded". Apparently it's from 5 years ago. I'm not sure what happened but please accept my most sincere apologies for not responding to your post. I try to respond to everybody who posts on my channel, so a belated thank you for watching my video.

what is a shadow line?
@richtroxler
@richtroxler 8 жыл бұрын
It's the shadow cast on the water by lights on a bridge. The lights are placed over the road so they cast a shadow down onto the water. If you walk out onto a bridge at night and look over the side, you will see a straight line of shadow on the water. Many types of predatory fish use the shadow to hide in and watch what bait is coming toward them, in the lighted water. It's pretty interesting to watch.

That bridge is gone. It was replaced with another a little deeper in the bay. They can actually build a bridge down here in 3 years, unlike the 13 years it took to complete the 3rd Wantagh in New York lol.

Where do you park?
@richtroxler
@richtroxler 5 жыл бұрын
To be clear, this video was shot on the old bridge. This bridge has subsequently been replaced by a new bridge. The shore area around the bridge is still the same except for the dock wall area where they used to tie up the barges. I should do a new video some day, but access is now open on both sides of the bridge. You park in the lot on the west side of the bridge (last light before crossing bridge). Good speckled trout fishing in the fall. Thanks for watching.

Brilliant video thanks Rich! Had to watch it a couple of times and will no doubt watch it some more. Although my local patch that I fish is nothing like this area, it is still an estuary and therefore will have certain things in common. One thing I did notice which kinda swirled my head around in the video a little. When you referred to the out going tide here - running right to left - it seemed really confusing at first because the red buoys were on your side of the channel. Indicating that coming into the estuary, you would keep the red buoys to your right or starboard side of your vessel. Here in the UK, you would keep your green navigation buoys on the starboard side as you come in - as shown here on a local chart www.visitmyharbour.com/harbours/east-coast/harwich/chart/77C0003393211/harwich-and-felixstowe-chart-2012 - Might seem trivial, but it managed to spin my brain waves into their own little back eddy there for a while. I came to your channel via the 3 (so far) videos of yours which were put up on the SurcastersJournal channel. Makes me wish I had someone like you around when I was a kid, just as my own father taught me the local estuaries from a boat. Now I can combine both for my fishing from my kayak. Fantastic stuff! Anyway, thanks again, from the other side of the ditch.

MrTatts64 Thanks MrTatts. At least one of my next videos will be reading water as pertains to estuaries, inlets and bays. I'm also planning a video on using Bing maps as a tool in finding spots. Stay tuned. The buoy system here has a saying red, right, return meaning the red buoys are on your right as you return to port. Get's kind of confusing in some spots if you're not sure weather your coming or going lol.

Hi Mike. This comment slipped through the cracks and I just found it going through the "Responses with new replies" button. You have a channel so you I'm sure you've seen this. I'd never used this setting before and I freaked when I realized how many comments I had left opened ended. So I apologize for that. I fish Lynnhaven Bay mid-summer to fall and then the beach for Drum from mid Sept to end of Oct. I sometimes travel to NC to extend my Drum season in the fall. I also fish Rudee and Little Creek some. What are your stomping grounds?
