A few people have asked how I set-up my gear to record surf tunes. Here's a video that explains at least some of that.
Help support the channel: paypal.me/davidnilesguitar
I record into an iMac using Garageband. The video was shot with a Canon HF G10 and edited in Final Cut Pro.

I love watching these types of videos where you actually have someone who's passionate about the genre they teach. Surf rock is one of those uncommon genres these days I'm trying to get into and most videos I've seen people do the stereotypical and stale version of just hitting the same 2 notes over and over without real consideration for the genre as a whole because they aren't into it. Enjoyed this video and learnt quite a bit

Thanks for an interesting video. I'm a seniorplayer, just starting up playing that wonderful surfsound I remember from my childhood. Nice to see what gear you're using, and thanks for the information about the surf "drip" - I didn't knew you only can make the real "drip" with the spring reverb and not the hall/plate. I'm into buying me a reverb pedal, so that was real good info. Cheers from Denmark, Mogens.
@anotherheadlessdemo
@anotherheadlessdemo 5 жыл бұрын
Glad you found the video helpful. There is way to get a drip sound using hall or plate - you just need to add a little delay. It almost sounds like the real deal. That said, there are quiet a few pedals out there that imitate spring reverb, beside the Oceans 11 (which I use all the time).

There's a pedal called the "Loomer" by Keeley Electronics. It's a fuzz-reverb stompbox, but it hass this reverse reverb with an adjustable pitch bend mod, where the reverse reverb starts low and bends up into the note, which sounds pretty similar to that dip you were doing with the vibe bar.

Hey, outstanding! I traded in my Strat and two modeling Amps was ready to quit, then my Guitar dealer asked me to try the Mini Jazzmaster for my sore old hands. Well, it was cute and seemed easier so I took it on loan, but he is getting a Classic Vibe in soon i want to try it. I keep my Boutique Amp and two pedals just in case. I then came across you series of videos. WOW!,, That is what i want to do play that Jab like the old days. Gotta get me that Oceans 11, it is so awesome. I need to finish this video and write down the gear you used. Really like the look of that special Guitar but it may be out of my budget. Thank You so much, D
@anotherheadlessdemo
@anotherheadlessdemo 4 жыл бұрын
Dennis Murphey Glad this inspired you! The JM Jazzmaster is in the same price range as the CV. Both are good - check out my comparison video. There are so many good reverb pedals out there too. Oceans 11 just happens to have a lot of options and flexibility compared to other “spring” reverb pedals.

Thanks for sharing this great stuff. I’ve been playing surf guitar over 40 years. I currently use Squier Mustang guitar with Fender Deluxe Reverb amp. The internal spring reverb does a great job but lacks a good “drip” sound. However, the audience can’t tell the difference! Rock on! 😎🎼🎸🎶🌊🏄🏼

Totally. Just like when i make a mistake on stage. And in my mind it is catastrophic. The audience never knew the difference. Best to laugh it off in the moment and keep rockin!

@@datsunlambchops4624 man, I just talked with a local guitarist after his set the other day. He put on a good show and everyone was happy, but he was hung up about his amps humming. Guess he normally plays a LP with humbuckers, but he was on a single coil stratocaster that day, and he said all he could hear was the buzz from the amp. Nobody in the audience heard it, I didn't hear it. Maybe it was there, maybe it wasn't. But on-stage "catastrophes" for us, usually don't even get noticed by the audience... Who are the reason we are there.
