I just bought the Surface Laptop 2 for college. I needed a solid laptop for programming ,doing homework and light gaming, and this laptop does all of that.

I bought the surface laptop 2 I7 8g, this is the first laptop I have bought in approx 5 years and I think the laptop is amazing. The laptop is very smooth, very nice to touch and use, it's user friendly and the keyboard is very comfortable. The USB C doesn't bother me to much as I don't use USB C that much but I can understand why it would be a issue for some. Would prefer this over anthing apple!

This is the first PC I've ever bought (instead of being a birthday gift, Christmas, etc), replacing a kinda crappy laptop I got for Christmas 2018 (yeah, only 5 months ago), and I really like it so far, especially in comparison to the old one.

Is the silver color better option for scratches? I want something sturdy for college

This product is great for students and people who want a portable light thin laptop. The lack of USB-C is alright at least there’s a USB-a. I would use this laptop for just normal uses such as watching Netflix, typing essay and all the simple stuff.

How did you dock the appa at the bottom of your desktop please?

Would the i5 256 go ssd version be enough for music production?

I’m a Mac guy that needed a Windows laptop for a few work applications. Took your advice on the black core i5 and am liking it a lot. The WiFi is a little slow to connect but the battery life is amazing.

Also: Hopefully Pro 7, Laptop 3 and Book 3 will come with Ryzen 3000 instead of whatever rehashed Intel CPUs we'll have in 2019. We'll have a tremendously better iGPU, likely same/better CPU performance, better battery efficiency and overall cooler as well.

I had the 2017 Macbook Pro with the touch bar, and I can tell you that I got this for around $800 opposed to the $2,5000 Macbook pro (new) and actually prefer this any day. I'm not disappointed at all, overall a great laptop!

In the video you mentioned 100% Adobe sRGB? I think you mean 100% sRGB because AdobeRGB and sRGB are different color spaces. So now raises the question for the creatively / content creation people, how much % is de AdobeRGB color space on the Surface Laptop 2?

This week I met my first Surface Laptop 2, Model 1769 (8th Gen i5, 256GB storage 8GB Go RAM). Like every other Surface I've worked on, the SL2 is tactilely wonderful, with nice key placement and predictable travel... a keyboard that's memorable in a good way. I've not owned one personally, but among my Windows-based clients, visual artists say the display and touchscreen are second to none. They speak with their wallets. In my experience, the life expectancy of a Surface is about four years. In addition to battery decline or semi-chronic rebooting to a BitLocker screen, I've seen wireless become unreliable (compensated by USB-WiFi or USB-Ethernet adapter) and detachable keyboard failure (USB keyboards used as replacements). Surface users-in-need gladly patch and limp until a new laptop arrives. And Surface users tend to have brand loyalty: I've seen multiple users buy their 2nd Surface device, thrilled that AC Adapters were interchangeable, and willing to forget the component failures that necessitated full system replacement. Many reviews consider the SL2 excellent-- a great bargain, comparable to MacBooks in the same price range. I'd tend to agree. But the most spot-on review I consulted this week was on a well-known DIY repair site. In a tear-down of the SL2, the review noted that *zero* systemboard components were field-replaceable. Which brings me back to the 3ish year-old 1769 SL2 I have in hand. It's super clean, both external clamshell and inside. But it's broke. It won't boot. It won't even POST. Its warranty expired literally within the last 3 weeks. It behaves like a device whose BIOS update was interrupted. Ugh. I've tried all the Surface tricks that I've successfully used before on other models, but I can't get anything to appear onscreen. Power-On results in 3 seconds of backlit screen, then brief blackness, then backlit again, then black, then brief backlight. The long-long-short backlight flash cycles 4 times, then the Surface shuts down. All documented MS keyboard startup combinations result in same. I've discharged the battery fully to try to trigger default ROM or firmware reset. Nope. With the owner's permission (and utter desperation), I opened the 1769's case to confirm what the tear-downs had warned. You cannot extract the internal storage to use any number of adapters and/or software tools to attempt data recovery-- as you can from nearly any other device with unsoldered, detachable storage-- even those with proprietary SATA connections. Hate a RAM-soldered MacBook all you like, but in a pinch you can detach its internal storage to mount in an external enclosure and recover its data. Screen resolution is the secret sauce that makes Surface great-- unmatched even. But be certain to never store important data solely on the Surface. Unless you've planned otherwise, when your Surface Laptop 2 dies, it takes your data with it. And that's a bummer.

My issue is that Microsoft knew what the complaints were with this machine and they made the decision NOT to fix them. Upgrading the processor is a natural progression of technology so that doesn't really count. The color is also a great addition, but again, color wasn't our biggest complaint or ask for the sl2. The thing we wanted most is more useful ports and that's exactly what Microsoft didn't give us. Pretty ridiculous. This is more of a refresh than a second iteration. Maybe the real changes will be made with the sl3.

I'm looking at buying this as its powerful enough for me to do my 3d and 2d animations but the only hesitation I have is, I like playing games....Overwatch, Bioshock, Dangan Ronpa, Assassin's Creed... Can I play these on this so I don't have to carry around something heavier and thicker?

Returned mine. The alcantara made me realize how sweaty my palms get. USB c would’ve been nice, but at least have regular hdmi instead of display port. And for my purpose I’m a heavy multitasker and the 3:2 aspect ratio wasn’t good for that. I still feel it’s the best keyboard I’ve ever used on a laptop.

The thing that keeps me from buying it is that you can not get the 16gb option with the core i5. Do you know why Microsoft limits that only to the i7?

This laptop with i5 and 128GB is currently £780 and the huawei matebook x pro with i5 and 256GB is £1099.. Any suggestions on which one I should get? The price of the surface 2 is very tempting but I could stretch my budget to the huawei too, just not sure if it's worth the added £300

What is the alternative to DisplayPort that they must move on to? If I look at the monitors in my local markets even DP is kind of a "luxury" item, I doubt the preferred alternative is HDMI.

I would love to buy one of these and turn it into my "work" laptop. The core i5/8gb would be perfect. However I require 1TB of onboard storage for that to be possible. Unfortunately for this device, if I wanted 1TB of storage, I would have to upgrade to the core i7/16GB/1TB option, which is $2,400.

So I'm looking at the Microsoft Store, and I see that I can get the Surface Laptop 2 with 256GB storage, 8GB RAM and an i5 for $1099. Or I can get the Surface Pro 6 with the same options selected for $999 ($1128.99 w/ TypeCover). So for $30 more, I could get a Surface Pro 6 which would be more pen friendly because it can lay flat, a slightly smaller, but higher PPI display, and a 1080P front-facing Camera. Am I missing something?

I would have bought this laptop immediately. But the price in Europe is quite high for Surface devices and the ports are so bad. 1x USB 3.0 and 1x Mini-displayport are not enough. It's very disappointing.

Why the hell Microsoft opted for Mini Display Port in 2019? Even Apple had long been departed from it, and there just aren't much accessories of that sort nowadays. USB-C at Thunderbolt speed should've been the most practical in just about any aspect. It does everything from transfers of data, charching, HDMI/VGA, and more complex and varieties of accessories to connect. The one thing that Microsoft is still behind today is their lacking of senses & touch to consumers.

That camera isn't terrible... but I still don't understand how a laptop camera is worse than a mid range smartphone camera.

I honestly hate how most windows laptops look, they're all just ugly to me. This laptop is the closest I can get to sleek, beautiful design, without having to buy a macbook. I am literally deadset on getting this laptop lol. (The laptop I'm using currently is a hp pavilion laptop with a 6th gen core i5. Its big, heavy to carry, slow, and it's honestly time for an upgrade. I'm tired of using it. I've had it for about 3 years now owo)

Please please please please please please do a full review of Microsoft's full usbc dongle with charging, 4k 60, full 1000MBS bandwith, usbc dock compatibility. Every single tech KZfaq reviewer talks about the lack of usbc on the surface laptop 2 and surface Pro 6. Everyone. Yet not a single one nitta zilch zero even mentions a the usbc dongle Microsoft sells, let alone review it. Even my favorites like you. Has it been discontinued. Does it work as advertise. Or has everyone sign a non disclosure agreement. Many shoppers want to know about this. If it truly works as advertised than thunderbolt 3 is t bhai e only thing really missing and the external GPU capabilities of that. But that's $500 to a thousand or more$$$ and most surface buyers have a console. A more powerful home. computer that.
